St. John’s Takes Two From Maine

by Troy Mauriello The St. John’s Red Storm showed that they can win games in a number of ways with a sweep of a doubleheader over Maine Saturday in Queens. St. John’s home opener saw Red Storm starter Sean Mooney toss the program’s first complete game since 2015. The Johnnies used that effort to cruise to a 3-0 victory. “Pretty much all four pitches were working,” Mooney said on his afternoon. “Fastball on both sides was working, changeup down in the zone was working, curveball to my glove side was really moving and cutting, said the hurler. Mooney was masterful on the afternoon, allowing just four hits in nine innings of work. Although he struck out only three, Mooney did not walk a batter and threw just 99 pitches. He was frequently ahead in the count and pitched to contact, which ended ...

Business as Usual For Massapequa

It takes a very strong-willed team to knock Massapequa out of the playoffs. Even after allowing five runs in the first inning against East Meadow in Nassau County Class AA finals, they fought back and got the tying runs on base in the last inning but was unable to get the clutch hit to tie it up. No. 3 seed East Meadow was crowned Class AA champions before losing to West Islip in the Long Island Championship. Massapequa Head Coach Tom Sheedy, now in his 14th year, will be going to battle in 2017 with another strong team–albeit without a couple of the key cogs from last year’s 19-win team. The big losses are two pitchers, Chris Keenan and Patrick Clyne. “Pat really developed into a super pitcher,” said Sheedy. “He came up as a sophomore and was All-State for us...

How Marcus Stroman Went From League I MVP to World Baseball Classic MVP

(Photo Credit: Bob Mitchell) Having coached him for five years on the diamond and one year on the gridiron, not many people know Marcus Stroman–who was just named Most Valuable Player of the 2017 World Baseball Classic–better than Patchogue-Medford HS Head Coach Anthony Frascogna. Prior to gaining national acclaim for taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning and leading Team USA to their first WBC championship, he was leading Pat-Med to league titles. But before that, he was the little guy that was turning everyone’s head no matter which sport he played. “I knew Marcus from when he was in elementary school because I knew Earl (his father), and I would see him on the fields,” said Frascogna. “I saw him throw a football 50 yards when he was eight-years-o...

Half Hollow Hills Little League Providing Unparalleled Experience for Young Ballplayers

Over the years, many elite ballplayers have graduated from the Half Hollow Hills high schools.  Some recognizable names are John Mincone, Alex Aurricchio, T.J. Pecoraro, Tommy D’Alessandro, Adam Brown and Stephen Woods. They all played in the Half Hollow Hills little league program at one point, according to the President of the league, Steven Muraco. The league has been home to a tremendous amount of kids in general–peaking at 1,700 in 2000, but has since leveled out around 1,000 since that time. They have spring, summer and fall leagues. Despite many kids playing other sports through out the season, they have been able to maintain their numbers in the fall when football and soccer are in-season. A big reason for this, according to Muraco, is the league’s reputation for ...

Suffolk CC Crushes Tompkins Cortland

They called the game between Suffolk CC and Tompkins Cortland CC at nearly 11 P.M. last night after seven innings with Suffolk leading 11-3. This was the second game of a double header for Tompkins, and Suffolk’s fist game since March 4. Designated Hitter Nicholas Siragusa helped Suffolk jump ahead in the first inning when he drove a two-run opposite-field home run over the fence in right center field. They never looked back from there. TCC scored a few runs of their own, but with the way that Suffolk was hitting there was never any doubt in the outcome. It felt like Suffolk was loading the bases ever inning. In the third a run came in when Matthew Riselvate got plunked in the back, and  a bad throw on an attempted double play caused two more runs to come in rather than get Tompkins ...
