Freshman Ryan Levenberg stole the show in today’s League 5 match up between two perennial playoff contenders. Even more impressive, he out dueled 2016 Long Island win leader and Hofstra-commit Brad Camarda. Hauppauge came away with the 4-2 victory over Hills West. “Ryan did a great job of keeping them off balance,” said Head Coach Josh Gutes. “They hit some hard balls–just right at us, so we might’ve been a little lucky in that regard because Hills West is a fantastic team and they’re tremendously well-coached,” he added. The freshman Levenberg went six innings, fanned six batters, allowing just two ER on five hits to record the victory in his first varsity start. He gave way to senior Matt Overton who fired a 1-2-3 seventh inning with two st...
The first week of the season showed significant promise for some teams, and not so much for the other teams. There’s a ton of talented teams this year in Class A, but let’s look at the top 5 teams after the first week of play. 5. Division (3-0) After an impressive sweep over Glen Cove in which the Blue Dragons scored 31 runs all together, they have cracked the top 5. Although this Division team may not have the talent as previous Division teams, they still need to be taken extremely seriously. South Side will be the Blue Dragon’s next victim, as they look to start the season off 6-0. 4. Carey (3-0) Carey started the season sweeping New Hyde Park–as they were expected to. Carey is the clear favorites to win Conference A2, and they aren’t expected to be removed ...
Well, it’s official. The first week of baseball is in the books. With a ton of surprises that took place in Class AA, let’s take a look at the top 5 teams in Nassau County. 5. Oceanside (2-0-1) After a surprising tie to Port Washington, Oceanside falls to number 5 in the first released power rankings. The Sailors will continue to lean on younger talent to help them get through the season. With series’ against Freeport and Farmingdale coming up, Oceanside is expected to remain in the top 5 for quite some time. 4. Calhoun (3-2) Although Calhoun dropped 2 games this week to the Hawks of Plainview JFK, it’s easy to see the potential in this team. Year in year out, Calhoun is constantly underrated, which seems to be the case again this year. If their pitching can hold th...
Many of the local teams have begun to turn their seasons around just at the right time. The early season struggles of the non-conference games are in the rear view mirror with conference play in full swing. Admittedly, with many of the teams now playing well, the difference between many of the teams is virtually razor-thin. The Elite- St. John’s (Record: 22-5, Stock DOWN) It was their first difficult weekend of the season. They lost two of three to Creighton. They won on Friday night in 14-innings, but it definitely took a toll on them. Sean Mooney threw well that night, he’s been lights-out through 44.2 IP this season. Jesse Berardi already has 43 hits and his name is skyrocketing up the draft boards. They will take on Albany and Butler this week. Trending Up Stony Brook (Reco...
The St. Joseph’s Golden Eagles had everything going right for them on Sunday as they took two 7-0 wins over Maritime. The pitching was stellar and the top of the order was electric. These two conference wins were huge for the Golden Eagles as they move to 13-7 on the season with a 7-1 conference record. These two teams will presumably be battling for the Skyline Conference up to the end of the season. You couldn’t have asked the top of the Golden Eagles’ order to be more productive in game one. Anthony Bonilla, Matt Burnett, Paul Britt, and Lou Doria combined for 11 hits, five RBI and six runs scored. Britt and Doria had monster days recording a combined seven hits between the two of them. Tyler Crafa also had a hit in the game. “I thought our guys came to play from the first in...
Through out the season, Exclusive aXcess members will be able to read our Insider Notes section based on observations from a scout’s perspective. Today I was in attendance for the Maritime vs St. Joseph’s showdown at Gregg Alfano Field in Patchogue. It was a crucial match up for two reasons If Maritime won both, they were in the driver’s seat in the Skyline Conference If St. Joseph’s won both, they were in the driver’s seat in the Skyline Conference. As it ends up, the two teams played at completely different speeds and the Golden Eagles won both games by the score of 7-0 while getting complete games from both Brandon Lubrano and Josh Outsen. I was a bit surprised that Maritime was so flat offensively. In Game 1, they only mounted a couple of rallies but the m...
Hometown teams put together an 11-6 record on Saturday. A number of teams that were struggling out of the gate are beginning to find their way. As we are getting deeper into the season, we have a decent image of where these teams stand for this season and what their identities are. We will see if the latter part of the season sparks any change of direction for any of these squads. St. John’s drops two of last three after loss to Creighton This is the team that not just Long Islanders have their eyes on, but people across the nation as well. The Red Storm have been one of the best teams in the country since the season’s inaugural week with a powerhouse lineup and lights-out pitching and defense. This past number of games, however, are games that they could possibly want to redo. They have l...
After nearly eight hours of baseball Molloy walked off with two conference wins against Queens College. A 31 run hit parade and an extra inning showdown featuring a huge walk off comprised the dramatic doubleheader today. Queens struck first in both games, scoring two in the first inning of game one on a fielder’s choice and another on a bases-loaded hit by pitch. They added two more in the second on a double by shortstop Joel Mendez and a sacrifice fly from Jon Temenak. Molloy answered with two of their own on a Ryan Dillon single in the third, but nearly all of Molloy’s 18 runs came in the third. Six RBI singles, three RBI doubles and one ground out drove in a total of thirteen runs for the Molloy Lions in the third and just like that they were set up for the win. However, Qu...
An exciting April night as St. John’s nearly plays two games in one, Farmingdale sweeps a doubleheader, and the bats spring to life for Stony Brook and both Nassau and Suffolk County Community Colleges Division I St. John’s Wins 14 Inning Marathon vs Creighton Creighton jumped out to an early two-run lead, but St. John’s fought back and pulled out a win in extra innings. The Red Storm’s pitching settled in after a rocky first to shut down Creighton’s bats for the subsequent 13 innings, giving St. John’s a chance to win in the top of the fourteenth. Singles by Troy Dixon and Anthony Brocato put the Johnnies in position with one out in the game’s final inning. Robbie Knightes struck the deciding blow when he singled through the left side which allowe...
Not a bad start to the varsity career for University of Miami-commit Jason Diaz. The sophomore fired three perfect innings with seven strikeouts during an overpowering outing this afternoon against St. Mary’s in a mercy win for Kellenberg. The reigning CHSAA champs wasted no time getting the offense going with a huge first inning. After back-to-back walks to Terrance Murray and Andrew Steidle, third-place hitter Justin Renner brought them both in with a long HR to left to make it 3-0. After Nick Quatromani reached on an error and James May walked, Diaz reached on an error to load up the bases. Robert Chesney drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-0 and Brett Carpentieri increased the lead to 6-0 with a two-run double. Renner recorded his fourth RBI of the inning when he drew a bases l...
(Photo Credit: Gregory Giaconelli) Wheatley ace Antonio Deodato underwent successful Tommy John surgery on Wednesday afternoon. The LIU Post-commit is one of the best left-handed pitchers on Long Island. He was named to our pre-season Top 30 list and is coming off a tremendous 2016 season in which he led his team to the Long Island Class B Championship. The procedure was performed by Dr. David Alchek–who is considered among the best orthopedic surgeons in the world at this procedure. The LHP was in good spirits despite the grim news that he would miss the remainder of his senior season. “I’m grateful to have had it done by the best,” said Deodato. “I’ll do whatever I can to step back on that mound and be even better than who I was before the operation,...
Two shorthanded teams squared off this afternoon in Smithtown. Stony Brook arrived with exactly nine players, and Smithtown Christian lost two starters to injuries during warm ups. Stony Brook starter Joe Wozny opened up the scoring in the top of the first with a two-run double to left. A single by clean-up hitter Ben Tutuska added one more, and a misplayed grounder turned it into a 4-0 game. Wozny took to the mound in the next inning and gave up two runs, one on a single to Giuseppe Crilly, and another on a fielders choice with the bases loaded. However, the hard-throwing freshman settled down and pitched an threw three no-hit innings after the difficult first, striking out nine batters before sliding over to third base in the fifth. After the game he said, “In the first inning I ha...
