The Plainview Hawks came out on top Saturday afternoon at Joe Corea Field, defeating the Calhoun Colts 6-5 in a tight ballgame. It’s safe to say Plainview is the real deal. This win improves the Hawks record to 6-0 on the year, sweeping their second consecutive opponent. “We’re really deep this year, our pitching is going to carry us and the sky is the limit for this team,” stated starting pitcher Justin Kim. Kim was the winning pitcher in this ballgame, going 5 solid innings, striking out 7 and allowing 3 runs. Although this win was a great team win from the Hawks, the story of this game was Mark Faello. Faello who is the star player for this undefeated Hawks team contributed offensively, defensively and on the mound. At the plate, Faello launched a moonshot over t...
Coming off of a brutal walk-off loss to Nassau County Community College yesterday Suffolk CCC came back strong with two wins in shortened games today. A seven-run bottom of the ninth propelled Nassau to the win yesterday, but when the two teams squared off in Selden, Suffolk came out on top 4-1 and 8-0. In game one Suffolk collected seven hits, scoring their first run on a bases-loaded double play in the first inning. Nassau came back with a run of their own in the third off of a double by shortstop Elijah Tavarez, but that’s all their bats could conjure on the day. Starter Joseph Mattero earned the win pitching a complete game four-hitter. Apart from that third inning double by Tavarez he was able completely shut down Nassau’s bats. The game wasn’t tied at one for long a...
Good Friday saw some good games, for those teams who don’t have the holiday weekend off Friday marked the start of several conference series. Division I Fordham Shuts Out St. Joesph’s Hawks: 5-0 An outstanding start from Reiss Knehr carried the Fordham Rams to a win in the second game of a three-game series with the St. Joesph Hawks. Knehr was phenomenal throwing 8 1/3 one-hit innings, his quest for the no-no ended on a lead off single in the seventh. However, he still earned his third win of the season with this gem of a performance, in which he struck out sixteen batters while walking just two. All five Fordham runs came in the third inning. A double from Matthew Kozuch scored centerfielder Jason Lundy and got the rams on the board. Koauzh and Jake Baker, who was hit by a pit...
Thus far, 2017 has been quite a year for no-hitters. There was almost another member of the group yesterday, but due to the newly implemented pitch-count rule, that opportunity was thwarted from Farmingdale RHP Angus McCloskey. Farmingdale defeated Syosset by the score of 8-2. McCloskey had his ‘A’ game and struck out 13 through the first 6.2 IP, while holding the opposition hitless. McCloskey stated that he was aware of it prior. “I knew that last batter I faced was my last,” said McCloskey. I struck out the first two in the inning and had the last hitter 0-2 and ended up walking him because the umpire squeezed me a bit, but if the pitch count wasn’t an issue, they weren’t touching my fastball. And had all the confidence in the world that third out was ...
Another big injury for a top-tier Long Island prospect. West Islip outfielder Jake Guercio, Fordham-commit, was diagnosed with a torn ACL and will undergo surgery on April 24. It is a huge loss for the reigning Long Island Class AA championship and for the young outfielder who was garnering looks from MLB scouts after a tremendous sophomore season. He recorded a hit in all but one game during their championship run and also led the football team to the Long Island Championship as the starting quarterback. While the injury is certainly a terrible break, he will have a chance to return for his senior season next year. His father, Phil, stated that Fordham already acknowledged that they will honor their scholarship and their Head Coach, Kevin Leighton, has been nothing but supportive.
The bats of Kellenberg struggled for the first few innings against St. Dominic freshman Carlos Hidalgo. Fortunately, they had their ace, Chris Cappas, on the hill to throw up zeros while the offense figured it out. “We really put it together as a team,” said the Pittsburgh-commit Cappas. “The whole lineup, front-to-back-is just hitting really well right now so it’s working out for us,” he added. Jack Delaney got them on the board in the third inning with an RBI double to score Terrance Murray. The Bayhawks tied it up in the fourth on an RBI single by Kevin Duffy, but the Firebirds responded back with a three-run fifth inning thanks to a fielder’s choice and a two-run single to left field by Cappas. The flamethrowing LHP fanned 10 batters over f...
As the clouds parted to make way for a beautiful day at Bethpage Ballpark, Rocky Point took the field against Newfield for a non-league match up. Rocky Point was carried to a 10-3 win by the arms of James Weisman and Colin Brodsky, who allowed just three hits between them, and a strong offensive outing–particularly from the middle of the line up. Not only did Weisman get the win, he drove in the first run of the game on what appeared to be a triple, however on appeal he neglected to touch first on his way around the bases and was called out. Weisman worked well with the lead, walks got him into a couple of jams, but he didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning. Rocky Point took a 1-0 lead into the third when they began to open the game up. First baseman Brian Forbes drove in t...
The Northport Tigers overcame an early 4-1 deficit against a difficult pitcher in Matt Lawlor of Bay Shore and put together two separate five-run innings in the third and fifth to defeat the reigning League II champs, 14-5. The offense was led by Matt Lindley (3-for-4, 3 RBI) and George Sutherland, who went 2-4 with four RBI, including a two-run single in the fifth to break the game open. “I think we had a different mindset knowing that we definitely needed to do something different this game offensively,” he said. “I think we came out and we took that approach and we did what we needed to do,” he added. Jordan Rose smacked a two-out, two-run double off the fence in left center field to give St. Anthony’s a 5-3 lead in the ninth inning, sending their dugout into a frenzy. It was their first lead of the day, and it proved to be the difference this afternoon. What a thrilling game it was between them and St. John the Baptist. Head Coach John Phelan was elated with the resilient effort of his Friars today, who came in facing a Cougars team who had fired four consecutive shutouts. “He (Jordan) came through in a big spot–a BIG spot–and delivered,” said Phelan. “You can’t put a price on that. They came prepared, they fought–we got behind 2-0 and their guy did a great job but we just battled. It was a constant battle. That’s what this who...
Through out the season, our Exclusive aXcess members will be able to read our Insider Notes–observations from a scout’s perspective from the high school and college baseball games. Today I was at Hauppauge vs Hills West as well as Commack vs Connetquot. Here are my takeaways from some of the top performers in the game: Brian Morrisey: Final: Commack 7, Connetquot 0 WP: Brian Morrisey (7 IP, 2 H, 14 K) pic.twitter.com/yIZE1mZy2w aXcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) April 10, 2017 The Stony Brook-commit was lights out. He struck out 14 in a two-hit shutout with two walks against one of the best offensive attacks in Suffolk County. Here’s what he did well: Morrisey has very smooth and repeatable mechanics for a 6’4″ prep pitcher. Typically, young pitchers wit...
When the aces take the hill, the offenses tend to go dormant. That was the theme today as Brian Morrell (Shoreham-Wading River ’17, Notre Dame-commit) and Josh Rovner (Pat-Med ’17, Adelphi-commit) both fired no-hitters, while Ben Brown (Ward Melville ’17, Siena-commit) and Brian Morrisey (Commack ’17, Stony Brook-commit) fired two-hit shutouts with double-digit Ks. This year is especially heavy on power-throwing right-handed pitchers and you can also throw Nic Luc (Farmingdale ’17, Adelphi-commit) and Nicholas Trabacchi (Smithtown West ’17, UMBC) to the mix who both fired gems today Brown has been close to perfect this year. Through three starts, he is yet to allow a run and has fanned 30. It will be a fas...
One of the signs of a great pitcher is dominating the top competition. Brian Morrisey certainly did that today in Commack’s 7-0 shutout over League 2 rival Connequot. The Stony Brook-commit struck out 14 batters, allowing only two hits, walking two and hitting one batter as the Cougars improved to 4-0 on the season after last week’s sweep of Central Islip. He was fired up, displaying tons of raw emotion after his clutch strikeouts. “I just wanted the team to be pumped as much as I was,” said the aXcess pre-season top 30 player. “First series was more of an easy sweep, we had some fun but this series we wanted to come back out really good,” he added. He impressed the bevy of MLB scouts that were in attendance with advanced feel for three pitches and ...
