Check out the latest edition of aXcess Baseball featuring special guest Mark Faello of Plainview-JFK. He is coming off throwing a no-hitter with 19 K in his last outing against Herricks.
To say that Saturday’s game between LIU Post and Molloy was a pitcher’s duel would be an understatement. The Pioneers took down the Molloy Lions 3-2 in walk-off fashion on Saturday. The game remained low scoring and the pitching was stellar despite the rain coming down throughout the entire game. Jake DeCarli got the win for LIU Post posting a fantastic line for the game. He went the full nine innings allowing only two runs, one earned, on four hits with no walks and only three strikeouts. DeCarli showed consistent command throughout the outing with all of his pitches hitting his spots around the zone. DeCarli legitimately made one mistake the entire game allowing a run on a passed ball in the fourth inning, but even with that mishap, he pitched phenomenally. His record improves to 5-1 on ...
Despite rain showers popping in and out all day St. Joseph’s and SUNY Old Westbury squared off in Patchogue for a Skyline conference doubleheader. A controversial home run call in the sixth helped propel St. Joe’s to a 4-3 win in game one, and in game two they exploded for a 12-0 win. St. Joe’s moves to 12-2 in the conference while Westbury falls to 6-8. Game one was scoreless for the first five innings as Nick Clemente was fantastic for St. Joe’s, and Trey Pizzutello was great for Westbury despite getting tagged with the loss. Shortstop Tommy Ziegen got the scoring started with an RBI double in the sixth, and Paul Rapoli followed him up with a two-run single later in the inning. The bottom half that inning is where things got interesting. Left fielder Lou Doria pul...
The morning rains subsided, allowing Lindenhurst to welcome Bay Shore for the rubber match of their three game series. Bay Shore led for most of the game, but Lindenhurst fought back several times, even taking the lead in the fifth. However, a sixth inning double by Damien Fanduiz tied the game, and a bases-loaded walk in the seventh put Bay Shore up 8-7 for the win. Bay Shore jumped all over Lindenhurst in the first, Mike LiVorio drove in the game’s first run on a double. Then Fanduiz drove in his first of two RBIs, scoring LiVorio on a single in the next at bat, before scoring himself on Matt Bross single. A sacrifice fly by LiVorio added a fourth run in the bottom of the second. Lindenhurst got on the board for themselves in the second. The pitcher Krishnam Patel hit a hard ground...
A lot has changed with regards to the landscape of Long Island baseball over the past three decades. One thing that hasn’t, however, is the level of success of Shoreham-Wading River has had. With their 9-6 victory over Miller Place on Wednesday, they have now qualified for a postseason berth in each of the past 32 years, according to their former Head Coach Sal Mignano (583 career wins). This year’s team is especially talented, as they have compiled a team ERA of 1.35 with five shutouts in 12 games. Pitchers have recorded 115 Ks in 83 IP. They have averaged 10.3 runs per game, smacked 17 HRs with a .367 AVG and have four Div-I players in Brian Morrell (Notre Dame), Nick Manesis (Army), Miles Kelly (Charleston) and Thomas Brady (NJIT). They also have Tyler Pepper (Felician) and ...
Bases loaded, two-out, 3-2 count, one-run lead against the reigning New York State Class A Champs from Wantagh. Gianni Sozio was on for the save and was facing Charlie Interrante–one of last year’s playoff heroes. After just missing with a 2-2 breaking ball he induced a ground out to SS to end the game to slam the door on the 2-1 victory for Bethpage. Final: Bethpage 2, Wantagh 1 pic.twitter.com/CkOHhfloh8 aXcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) April 19, 2017 “I was really nervous to be honest with you,” said Sozio directly following the game. “Legs were shaking–but the only thing on my mind was the win. They’re a great team with great hitters–and of course I had to face the top of the lineup which is never easy to go through. They hav...
Going against one of the top pitchers on the island like Chris Stefl (St. John’s-commit) is a daunting task for any team. But for a quality hitting team like Lynbrook, the secret sauce was simply in their approach, according to Head Coach Al Marrazzo. “We always talk about if we could get into good counts–which is what we spoke about this week–we could be successful, and that’s what we were. I think you saw that with the top of our lineup, they were a little bit patient–they got fastballs in fastball counts and they were patient on curveballs and change ups. He settled in towards the middle of the game, and he really had his curve and change up working really well, but I think we had him early when he left the fastballs up at times. I think we had a real...
It’s hard to have a better inning than Ward Melville sophomore Logan Doran had in the ninth inning. The shortstop made an absolutely stunning diving play with his back to home plate to end the top of the ninth inning and followed it up with a lead off walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to deliver the Patriots a 4-3 victory in a crucial League I match up against Pat-Med. After the game, Doran sounded mature beyond his years when asked about his emotions in such an emotionally-charged game. “I made an error, so I had to come back and make a great play,” said the highly-sought after sophomore. “I just saw a fastball coming up and I put a good swing on it. This is a big rivalry between us,” he added. Final: Ward Melville 4, Pat-Med 3 Sophomore Logan Dora...
The defending state champions were defeated in a crazy week of baseball. The best part about that? The season’s just getting started. Here are this week’s top 5 teams in Nassau Class A. 5. Plainedge (4-2) (Last Week: Unranked) Do you believe in miracles? YES! Plainedge did the unthinkable last week in which they upset the defending state champions, 10-2. Not only did they beat them once, but they were one play away from walking away with 2 wins last week. Expect to continue to see big things from this young Plainedge team, specifically Billy Wildeman and Joe Cottone. The Red Devils have their biggest series of the year next week against Division. 4. Division (6-0) (Last Week: 5) Division continues to impress as they start the year off 6-0. Because of that, they will move up in ...
With a week of not many surprises in Class AA, let’s take a look at the top 5 teams. 5. Farmingdale (7-2) (Last Week: Unranked) Although the Dalers have had several nail biters thus far, at the end of the day, they’re 7-2. Pitching has helped Farmingdale get to where they are right now, specifically Adelphi-commit Nic Luc and freshman Justin Rosner. Farmingdale will match up against Oceanside in a highly-anticipated series. 4. Calhoun (6-3) (Last Week: 4) After sweeping Herricks in convincing fashion, Calhoun has solidified their spot in the top 5. Led by Jack Pugliano offensively, the Colts always seem to string together hits at the right time and work themselves into great hitters counts. For that reason alone they are a team to be on the lookout for. Calhoun will face the de...
This week we will limit it to the Top 10 local colleges. It’s getting very difficult to differentiate the teams and that’s a testament to how they’ve turned their seasons around and improved the overall product of Long Island baseball. Without further ado, here’s my best effort at our latest installment of this season-long series. The Elite St. John’s (Record: 26-5, Stock UP) They won all four games this week by the cumulative score of 32-11 and that was with two extra-inning wins! Jesse Berardi is having one of the finest years in the rich tradition of the program’s history. He played in front of 20 scouts the other day–he’s putting up numbers better than World Series winner Joe Panik did. He and John Valente already have 50 hits. They are t...
Having been around a winning culture, Brandon Isolano learned a thing or two about winning from competing for a New York State Class AA championship last season. It paid off in the eighth inning today, when he lined the go-ahead RBI single to right field to score Frank Genise and give West Islip a crucial 4-3 series win over Bellport. “They just showed us how to play as a team, just play hard and practice hard,” said the senior. The victory gave Mike LaDonna his first varsity win in an exhilarating back-and-forth affair that featured plenty of drama. West Islip got off to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning off Sacred Heart-commit Joe Greco when Kyle O’Neill (Felician-commit) ripped an opposite field double and scored on Greg Tsouprakos‘ (Pace-commit) RBI sin...
