Clutch Hits Lead Nassau Over Rival Suffolk, 5-1

Final: Nassau 5, Suffolk 1 (8 innings) pic.twitter.com/gHUKEbUL2W — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 22, 2019 After six innings of squandered opportunities, Nassau broke through in a big way in the seventh inning. T.J. Toscano got things started with an infield single and Mike Iacobellis sacrificed him into scoring position. A walk brought up Tucker Hahn, a big slugger who smoked one into the right-center field alley for an RBI double to tie up the game. Starting pitcher, Conor Jacoby, came up next and crushed a HR to break the tie and give Nassau a lead that they would not relinquish. An unusual call took one of the runs off the board, when Suffolk appealed that one of the runners failed to touch home plate and the umpire confirmed that was the case. Nevertheless, the damage was...

Adelphi Bats Stay Hot, Defeat NYIT 9-3

Brett Malm talks about his 2-Run HR that jump started the scorching hot Adelphi offense. pic.twitter.com/Gg803ldSBk — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 20, 2019 Adelphi had no problem handling the talented NYIT pitching staff, as they cruised to a 9-3 victory on Wednesday afternoon. After putting up a ten-spot yesterday against Molloy, Adelphi wasted no time getting back in the run column. To start things off, Brett Malm launched a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 1st inning, giving them an early lead. Malm finished 3-5 on the day with 2 RBI. “We had a good jump out of the game today with a 2-run home run in the 1st inning that helped my team get on the board early,” said Malm. “We kept it going from yesterday and we’re going to keep this momentum going ...

A Young Bellport Team Takes the Field Without Coach Batewell in 2019

Here’s the first of two grand slams by Bellport senior Anthony Jacabacci today pic.twitter.com/QYOBiWbesj — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 4, 2018 When Bill Batewell took over as Head Coach of Bellport 11 years ago, he was stepping into a program that had not done much winning. Known for their powerhouse football program that has won several Long Island Championship teams, the baseball team often had 11 or 12 players try out for the team. It took a few years, but he led them to their first League 5 title in 51 years in 2017. “There’s not many people that would’ve had the patience to turn around this program,” said his long-time assistant Joe Murphy, who has been with him since 1978. Murphy is now the interim coach after Coach Batewell was forced to t...

Adelphi Overcomes the Flu Bug, Powers Past Molloy, 10-5

Adelphi Head Coach Dom Scala discusses how his team overcame the flu bug and their 10-5 victory over Molloy today pic.twitter.com/0mFiNLhEG8 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 19, 2019 Over the past week, several members of the Adelphi Panthers have been relegated to the bench due to flu-like symptoms. Being in close quarters, one player can cause a number of others to get sick and that was a major reason for their recent defeats on their annual trip to Florida. Fortunately, getting back to New York was exactly the spark the offense needed to get back on track as they used the long ball to power past local rival, Molloy College, by the score of 10-5. Lawrence Cicileo continued his red-hot start to the season with a two-run first inning HR to score Brett Malm and give the Panthers...

College Power Rankings: Week 5

This week we covered Stony Brook, LIU Post and Molloy, so I’ve almost gotten to see all of the local teams. Right now, the most compelling Division might be Division-II with four of the five teams are over .500. It makes this list more intriguing when the teams are competitive. Here’s my best attempt to rank the locals: Division-I: Fordham (Record: 11-9, Trending EVEN) It was not a great week for them in Maryland, but they retain their top spot for another week because of the six-game win streak leading up to that. Jake MacKenzie is leading the team in hitting by far; .360 AVG with 27 hits already. The 3.47 ERA has certainly kept them winning ballgames. They will face Manhattan for one and St. Bonaventure for three this weekend. 2. Stony Brook (Record: 7-7. Trending UP) Where w...

Molloy Holds On To Defeat Dominican, 10-6

Tim Panetta carried a shutout into the 9th inning. He discusses the victory for Molloy pic.twitter.com/H0K4YqVKOm — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 17, 2019 Molloy has spent this weekend showing that they know how to score. After a double-header with Concordia, where they scored a combined 23 runs on the day, Molloy added another 10 in today’s win over Dominican. The question with Molloy is not whether they can score enough to win, but whether they can limit the opposition enough.. When they get performances from their starters like the one from today by Timothy Panetta, then Molloy will certainly be tough to beat moving forward. Panetta was dominant on the day, carrying a five-hit shutout into the 9th inning today. He did fall into some trouble in the 9th as Dominican was able ...

LIU Post Drops Both Games To Assumption

Quite the opposite of Saturday’s result, LIU Post suffered a two-game sweep at the hands of Assumption. They now stand at 9-7 on the season. Up next for the Pioneers is East Strousburg, who they play on Wednesday at 3 PM. Game One: From the beginning of this game, it seemed as if Post was in control once again. They jumped out to an early 2-0 start, thanks to RBI from Mike Manzione and Anthony Vaglica. On the mound, Mike Stiles got the start for the Pioneers and was fantastic. Through the first three innings, he struck out six batters. He finished going seven innings, allowing five hits, no earned runs and struck out eight batters. At the start of the 6th inning, Assumption got things started with a lead off single by Alex Richardson, who would advance to second on a throwing error. ...

Saturday (3/16) College Baseball Recap Presented by The Schwarz Institute

One month into the college baseball season and things have kicked into high gear. Yesterday was another thrilling day, we covered LIU Post‘s DH sweep over Assumption, which you can read about here. There was plenty of other action including a big conference DH sweep by a local D1 and a huge offensive output by a local D2. Here’s how it went down: Division-I: Stony Brook left Saturday sweeping UMBC in a double header, extending their winning streak to three. In game one, they won 4-3 in a closely contested battle. In a back and forth game, things were all knotted up heading into the 7th inning. Once again Michael Wilson proved why he is the catalyst of this lineup, as he launched a go ahead home run to center. He finished 3-3 on the game with 4 RBI. He now owns a .442 average an...

LIU Post Sweeps Assumption

Final: LIU Post 3, Assumption 1 WP: Varela S: Loeschorn Here’s Varela on the win pic.twitter.com/igKcB5YEIW — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 16, 2019 Game 1 Great pitchers rise to the occasion. Over the past year, James Varela has proven his value to LIU Post time-and-time again. Today was no different, as the senior RHP was outstanding in the Pioneers’ 3-1 victory over Assumption. Over 8 IP, he allowed just 5 hits, 1 BB with 14 strikeouts to improve to 2-2 on the season. Freshman Josh Loeschorn came in and fired a 1-2-3 ninth inning with two strikeouts for his second save of the season. It appeared the Pioneers would have an easy afternoon victory when they got out to quick 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Dave Brehm and a wild pitch that scored Chr...

Friday’s (3/15) College Baseball Recap Presented by The Schwarz Institute

Another Friday of baseball in the books, and suddenly we are just a few days away from Spring. With little cold days left on the year, Long Island teams are excited to return from down south and play on their home fields. We saw some winners and some losers in Friday’s five college baseball games. With that being said, here are the recaps from yesterday’s ballgames. Division-I: St. John’s: After a rough stretch to begin the season, the Red Storm appear to have turned a corner. They defeated Kansas, 1-0, in walk-off fashion in the 10th inning. Wyatt Muscarella scored from third for the only run of the ballgame. Ace Sean Mooney took the hill, and did not factor in the decision, although, he did everything in his power. The right-handed pitcher fired seven shutout, allowing ...
