Giancarlo Giacometti fires 6.1 innings today against Kellenberg in a 6-1 victory for St. John the Baptist. He’s our @BsbLifestyle101 Player of the Game pic.twitter.com/sRz2Bffj67 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 9, 2019 With several MLB scouts lined up behind home plate, Giancarlo Giacometti shined the brightest on a dreary day in East Meadow on Opening Day for St. John the Baptist. The crafty right-handed pitcher was unflappable, as he fired 6.1 strong innings in a 6-1 win for the Cougars over Kellenberg. He noted that he was excited for today and had it marked on his calendar facing Miami-commit Jason Diaz. “‘Especially being Opening Day, I just wanted to get the win,” said the right-hander. After going down 1-2-3 in the first, they had a huge second i...
FINAL: Plainview 3 Port Washington 0 Ziv Gar: CG, 2H, 5K Tyler Galleti: 3-Run HR pic.twitter.com/LDlaejQFkp — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 8, 2019 On a beautiful Monday afternoon, Plainview made quick work of Port Washington as they triumphed to a 3-0 victory. In total, this game lasted just 90 minutes. From the very first pitch of the game, it was evident this was going to be a pitcher’s duel. Ziv Gar took the mound for Plainview in the season opener and Derek Livingston got the start for Port Washington. Through the first three innings, both pitchers dominated their first time through the lineup. There were zeroes across the board in the runs and hits columns heading into the fourth. With runners on first and second with one out, Tyler Galletti stepped up to the plate...
Joey Savino on the 17-1 victory for Connetquot, he went six with eight strikeouts pic.twitter.com/141kSar5GQ — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 8, 2019 In what was actually a rematch from last year’s playoff game in which Bay Shore outlasted Connetquot, this time it was the T-Birds that came out on top. With an offense that is relentless and arguably the top pitcher in the region on the mound, it was an easy 17-1 victory for Connetquot to improve to 5-0 on the season. Joey Savino went six innings, he struck out eight and allowed one run on four hits. “We were awake today, we came out with some energy,”said Savino. “My stuff was on today I felt really good, the warm weather was good. Overall a great team win,” he added. The game was scoreless after on...
I am honestly thrilled to see the recent run of success of the local teams. Besides the obvious enhanced interest in the coverage, it is great for the local baseball community to have such a good product at all the Long Island universities. It gives top high school players more reason to stay home, which results in having a stronger overall caliber of play. Once again, the rankings were very difficult this week. As you can see by the records, almost all of the teams are above .500, so I decided to add their records this week because trends is really the only way to separate some of these teams. For example, Old Westbury is coming off a huge week which isn’t obvious when looking at their overall record but only when you look at where they were last week at this time. The college playo...
by Ethan Marshall Todd Segarra on his team’s victory this afternoon @EcybTournaments pic.twitter.com/FGcShzzFCM — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 7, 2019 The Oil City Bandits defeated the RVC Royals 10-4 in the first game of a Sunday afternoon doubleheader. Aggressive baserunning and a strong outing by starting pitcher Todd Segarra played a big role in the Bandits’ victory. Four walks, four stolen bases and four wild pitches allowed the Bandits to take a 4-0 lead in the top of the first without recording a hit. Segarra credits head coach Tommy Beirne for encouraging them to be aggressive on the basepaths. “Coach [Beirne] always tries to get us to be aggressive, and it always works out for us,” Segarra said. “The more risks we take, the better we do.” Head Coach Tommy Beirn...
What a day for baseball it was yesterday. It was the first day where the conditions were no concern at all. At 66, sunny and no wind you could say it was a perfect day. Additionally, teams in our coverage area went 20-6 which makes it that much better. Here’s how it went down. Division-I: Fordham completed the double header sweep over St. Joseph’s on Saturday to improve to a record of 19-12 on the season. In game one, they blanked St. Joseph’s 2-0. Evidently, this game was a pitchers duel. Matt Mikulski got the start for Fordham and was phenomenal, going eight innings allowing four hits, no earned runs, four walks and seven strike outs. Kyle Martin picked up his sixth save of the year in relief. In game two of the double header, Fordham showed some life in the late inning...
LI Thunder walk-off on a wild pitch for a 5-4 win ! pic.twitter.com/CsUBsdmh87 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 6, 2019 Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning, things were looking bleak for the 11U LI Thunder. The boys battled back, though, and mounted a rally which culminated in Taylor Nitsch scoring the winning run on a wild pitch. “I’m just really excited we won,” said Nitsch. “I got a really good jump and there was a wild pitch and that’s all we wanted,” he added. The Thunder got out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Ben Cohen to score Nitsch, who singled to right. Thunder’s starting pitcher, Charlie Nella was outstanding for the first three innings, allowing no runs on just one hit. Dodger ...
With the poor weather on Friday, most teams were able to schedule double headers on Saturday or Sunday to make up the rain out. Only a few teams were in action. The competition is beginning to heat up. On Friday, we saw only three Long Island teams play, serving a perfect 4-0 record on the day. With conference tournaments just a little over a month away, every game counts. Here’s how things shaped out Friday. Division-I: Hofstra picked up an impressive 7-1 victory at the hands of Northeastern on Friday. This marks their fifth win of the year, but it was one they desperately needed. Hofstra got off to a scorching hot start, as they scored three in the opening frame. They never looked back from here. Quinn Parker went 2-5 with 3 RBI at the plate, and Vito Friscia had 2 RBI. Two-way pla...
Nick Fanti in the game for Team Italy ! pic.twitter.com/XwOXsvQYCj — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 12, 2017 Nick Fanti, a 31st round pick out of Hauppauge HS in 2015 that has excelled in the minor leagues, had successful shoulder surgery today in Philadelphia. He stated that he is “excited to come back next season.” The southpaw had a quick rise to prominence during the 2015 season in which he won the Carl Yastrzemski Award in a tight vote over Ward Melville 3B/RHP Joe Flynn. He was drafted in the 31st round of the 2015 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies, opting to sign rather than fulfill his commitment to Marist College. He was the first of the four Long Island players to sign with the Phillies between 2015-’18. He was the recipient of the 2015 Steven M...
Rock Point is coming off a banner season in 2018 in which they captured their first Suffolk County Class A title under Head Coach Andrew Aschettino. The most interesting story line of this years team, however, might not be the quest for a title defense but the fact that on a team with 13 players, there are only 10 last names. The 2019 Eagles field a team with three sets of brothers; Trey and Cody Miller, Eric and John Maier as well as Connor and Sean Hamilton. I had a chance to speak with Trey, Eric and Connor about the dynamic of playing with their brother on a varsity baseball team, the impact that Aschettino had on the Rocky Point program prior to retiring as well as a host of other topics. The Millers Trey and Cody Miller were born in Louisiana and came here when Trey was 13 for their ...
Austin Vlahakis talks about how he worked his way out of a 7th inning jam to propel his team to victory. pic.twitter.com/cvmtqjvbPD — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 4, 2019 On Thursday afternoon, Oceanside survived a late inning surge from Garden City, as they escaped with a 5-4 victory. In the opening frame of the game, Oceanside led things off with back-to-back-to-back doubles from Jake Lazzaro, Noah Eisel and Austin Vlahakis. The string of three doubles provided the Sailors with a quick 3-0 lead. Eisel came through again in the early innings for Oceanside as he launched a solo shot, providing them with a four-run lead in the 2nd inning. He finished 2-for4 on the day and also got the start on the mound, pitching 4.1 innings allowing one earned run. When the Oceanside bats wen...
Our @BsbLifestyle101 Player of the Game is Justin Harvey for his game-winning two-run home run in the sixth inning pic.twitter.com/ZrH09z2XBM — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 3, 2019 With the game on the line in the sixth inning of a rivalry game, Justin Harvey was looking for one pitch. He got it, up & in, and he did not miss it. He deposited a 2-R home run to left field to score his brother, Nick, and break a 3-3 tie against Smithtown West. Smithtown East sent Adelphi-commit Michael Storms to the mound. He allowed two runs in the top of the first on an RBI ground out by Jason Weinhaus that scored Eric Reuter and an RBI single to center by John Powlowski to score Jimmy Klee. Brendan Kupka started for West, he allowed the runs right back on an RBI double by Will Kennedy an...
