On this Sunday morning, it was truly a tale of two games between the 12u Farmingdale Greendogs, and Batting 1000, who went on to split a doubleheader. In the first game, the Greendogs jumped out to an early lead. A double off the bat of Angel Cartagena brought home Jack Molloy. However, Batting 1000 answered back, manufacturing a run without a hit. Daniel Defonte reached on an error, then proceeded to steal second and third base. Alex Bonanno brought him in, hitting a grounder to the second baseman. On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, we saw plenty of competitive college baseball games on Long Island with some conference rivals going at it. Here’s how it went down: Division-I: Trailing by three runs heading into the bottom of the 8th, St. John’s came back to defeat Xavier 9-8 in 14 innings. With the victory, St. John’s avenges their Friday loss and improves their record to 19-12 on the season. Although their pitching performance wasn’t the greatest, St. John’s combined for 16 hits at the plate and shut down the Xavier offense in the late innings. After surrendering eight runs in the first six innings, The St. John’s bullpen allowed no earned runs and three hits in the final eight innings. Turner French picked up the victory in relief. At the plate, M...
Let’s just say it was not the most fruitful of days for the local college teams. If not for the fellas in Brookville, it would’ve been a big 0-for-the day. We will jump into the action: Division-I: St. John’s fell 11-8 to Xavier, who improve to 4-0 in Big East play despite having an overall record of 13-21. The Red Storm actually led 3-0 in this game from an RBI single by Mitchell Henshaw and an RBI triple by Mike Antico, but the lead did not last. Two errors put five unearned runs on the board and suddenly they trailed 5-4. They were able to tie it up on an RBI ground out by Ryan Markey and take the lead on a sac fly by Henshaw but Xavier scored six times in the eighth inning against Joe Kelly to blow the game open. Carson Bartels had three hits for the Red Storm and Hen...
(Today was our Game of the Week Presented by Muddy Locker Sports. Please check them out by clicking here.) In his first outing of the year, Kevin Hahn could not have looked more comfortable, even in moments of discomfort. The senior right-hander took a line drive off his body and calmly picked the ball up and fired to first for an out in the fifth inning. He allowed only two hits and one walk in total and retired the last seven hitters to face him to complete the 1-0 shutout for the Bayport-Blue Point Phantoms over Mount Sinai. It was one of those games that moved quickly and if you stepped aside for a few moments you likely missed a couple innings. Both Hahn and T.J. DeGennero, the starter for Mount Sinai, were terrific in this game. They both cruised through the first inning without inci...
We are about two weeks into the regular season for most teams at this point in Suffolk County, and one week for Nassau and the Catholic League. It goes quick–way too quick. It seems we wait forever for baseball season and then it’s over 6 weeks later. That means early season story lines that should be chalked up to ‘small-sample size’ and ‘too early to tell’ actually become the story lines the entire season. Here’s a stream of consciousness about what I’m seeing, what I’m hearing and what I am predicting… Nassau County Matt Yip. What more can the kid do? I remember watching him in the winter going into the 2018 season and thinking wow this kid has a nice swing I’m surprised he’s still under-the-radar. I knew of his bro...
In dominating fashion, MacArthur shut out Great Neck South on Thursday evening by a score of 8-0. With the victory, MacArthur sweeps the series to start their season off 3-0. From the get go, it was obvious the Generals were going to be in control of this one. After a scoreless first inning, Jimmy Mahoney and David Johnsen got things started as they both drove in runs in the second inning to provide MacArthur with an early 2-0 lead. This was all the run support Kyle Gaertner would need. On the mound, Gaertner went the distance as he threw five shutout innings with six strike outs. Throughout the series, the MacArthur pitching staff only allowed two earned runs. Kyle Gaertner talks about how the MacArthur pitching staff was dominant during the three-game sweep and what it means heading into...
Mason Kelly ripped the go-ahead 2-R single in the fourth inning to give Shoreham-Wading River the lead for good. The Furman-commit lined a two-run single to center field to give Shoreham-Wading River a lead that they would not relinquish. They came away with a 4-2 victory over new league rival John Glenn. Early on, pitching was dominant on both sides. A pitching match up juniors; right-hander Cullen SantaMaria for SWR and Matt Polestino, the southpaw for Glenn. The first order of business for Glenn was getting a hit, after getting no-hit by Aidan Crowley yeste...
Smithtown has always had a rich tradition of baseball. In fact, there is a chance this season only adds to that prestige with their talented roster that features arguably the deepest pitching staff on Long Island and a number of impact bats such as Will Kennedy, the Harvey twins, Ryan Pennisi and others. Despite all the success in recent years, the 1990 team remains their last New York State Championship, although they did win the Suffolk County titles in 1999 & 2000. That 1990 team defeated Farmingdale to win the Long Island Championship and kept their momentum rolling right through the NYS tournament. The star of that team has a direct connection to this Smithtown East team. Mike Ciminiello, a very talented southpaw that was the winning pitcher on April 3 against rival Smithtown West...
FINAL: Plainedge 2 Bethpage 1 WP: Frank Whitenack pic.twitter.com/Be3LCpJNSM — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 9, 2019 Avenging yesterday’s 8-2 loss, Plainedge came through when it mattered most on Tuesday afternoon as they defeated Bethpage, 2-1. The beginning of the game opposed to the end of the game were two completely different story lines. In the bottom of the first inning, Chris McGuggart launched a solo shot to put Bethpage out in front to an early 1-0 lead. Considering Nick Wendling struck out the side in the top half of the inning, it seemed as if it was going to be a long ballgame for Plainedge. Through the first three innings, Wendling had eight punch outs. Then came the fourth inning. After surrendering just one base runner the first time through the lineup, W...
Giancarlo Giacometti fires 6.1 innings today against Kellenberg in a 6-1 victory for St. John the Baptist. He’s our @BsbLifestyle101 Player of the Game pic.twitter.com/sRz2Bffj67 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 9, 2019 With several MLB scouts lined up behind home plate, Giancarlo Giacometti shined the brightest on a dreary day in East Meadow on Opening Day for St. John the Baptist. The crafty right-handed pitcher was unflappable, as he fired 6.1 strong innings in a 6-1 win for the Cougars over Kellenberg. He noted that he was excited for today and had it marked on his calendar facing Miami-commit Jason Diaz. “‘Especially being Opening Day, I just wanted to get the win,” said the right-hander. After going down 1-2-3 in the first, they had a huge second i...
