East Islip breaks through in the seventh inning on a two-run single by Nick Baldino. They lead 4-0 as we head to the bottom of the seventh pic.twitter.com/r19Pgt4kid — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 30, 2019 Matt McHugh was pitching like he had a plane to catch. He needed just 72 pitches to fire a complete game 1-hit shutout in a 4-0 victory over West Babylon. “I was trying to get guys out as quickly as possible is what I was trying to do,” said McHugh. The problem was his counterpart, St. Joseph’s-commit Tyler Gamba was doing the same. Inning-after-inning each pitcher was mowing down the opposition. In fact, the teams were able to complete five innings in one hour as each pitcher was throwing strikes and working quickly. The Redmen offense, which had been str...
Freshman Jacob Lee is the @BsbLifestyle101 player of the game, as he led the charge in Syosset’s comeback victory. pic.twitter.com/LlBzlMaX9X — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 29, 2019 On Monday afternoon, it was Syosset who got the best of Farmingdale, prevailing to a 4-2 victory in extra innings. Before the game started, it was evident this was going to be a game of inches. The reason for that was because of the stellar pitching match up. Syosset called upon Tufts-commit Cameron Mayer to take the mound, while Farmingdale started ace Justin Rosner. Farmingdale got to Mayer first in the second inning, as Robbie Manetta delivered an RBI single to put them on the board. Mayer struggled a little in the early innings, but settled in as the game went on. In the bottom of the 3rd, Kev...

With six games left to play in the regular season, there are a ton of teams that are competing for playoff spots. For the first time in awhile, there’s no such thing as a team that’s clearly better than everyone else. Right now, a number of teams can win the County Championship. There have been some surprises thus far, but these next two weeks will be interesting to see who comes out on top in the race for the postseason. Here are the mid-season power rankings for Class A. 10. Carey (7-2) Under Doug Robbins first year as head coach, things are looking bright for Carey heading into the back end of the season. They hold a 7-2 record with a chance to win their conference. However, they still have to beat an extremely talented Garden City team if they wish to do so. They play a win...
At the halfway point in the season, there have been a few outcomes nobody has expected. For example, after finishing with a 1-17 record just a season ago, Hicksville is now the only undefeated team remaining in Nassau County with six games remaining. There’s plenty of baseball left, but at this point we know the best teams in the county. Here are the mid season power rankings for Class AA. Let’s just into it: 7. Syosset (5-4) After starting the year off 5-1, Syosset hit a small bump in the road last week as they played the defending state champions. Unfortunately, they were swept as a result. They turn the page to Farmingdale this week, which will be a highly competitive series. Ace Cameron Mayer will take the hill for them in game one, he has been one of the best pitchers on t...
Typically we only do the recaps on Saturday and Sunday morning but yesterday was pretty busy due to the rain outs. All the Division-Is were in action plus a couple of the Division-IIs. There was more rainouts as well which means today will be an uncharacteristically busy Monday for college teams. Here’s how it went down: Division-I: Stony Brook came from behind to knock off UMBC, 3-2. Down 2-0 going into the 6th, Johnny Decker would get SBU on the board with an RBI single. Brandon Janofsky would tie the game up in the following inning after he scored on a wild pitch. That wouldn’t be the last time you heard from him as he would go on to win the game in extras with an RBI single. Sam Turcotte would go on to be credited with the win for his four scoreless innings in relief of Jared Mit...
We are on the cusp of May which means one thing; throw out all the chatter and rankings and see how the teams perform in crunch time. This week we covered LIU Post-NYIT which was (hopefully) a prelude to an outstanding ECC tournament in two weeks. NYIT was able to defeat a dominant pitcher in James Varela, but LIU Post showed their resiliency with a win in Game 2. The double header on Sunday was postponed so we will have to wait until later today and Wednesday to see how the series plays out. As far as the rest of the local teams, let’s take a look: Division-I: St. John’s (Record; 23-16, Last Week: 1-3) 2. Stony Brook (Record: 24-15, Last Week: 2-3) 3. Fordham (Record: 26-20, Last Week: 3-2) 4. Hofstra (Record: 13-26, Last Week: 2-2) Analysis: I was going to keep Stony Brook at...
Coach Jason Spahn on the 5-3 victory pic.twitter.com/u1AzVqr3Rt — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 28, 2019 The Islip Owls, behind strong pitching by Ryan Barlow in Game 1 and Max Bergen, Kevin Mills and Jamie Yurcak in Game 2, swept a doubleheader over the Junior Ducks by scores of 2-1 and 5-3. According to Owls head coach Jason Spahn, the team’s victories “came down to pitching and some timely baserunning.” A stolen base and induced balk by Ronan Montana helped start a rally in the second game, leading him to score the deciding run on an infield single by Mikey Tehan. “The kids got the job done today and I’m very proud of their performance,” Coach Spahn said. Ryan Barlow threw a complete game in the first game of the doubleheader, with the only run he allowed coming on a wild p...
After a washout on Friday, everyone was back in action on Saturday. Although the unseasonably cold weather made things interesting, it was a day filled with great baseball regardless. Here’s how it went down: Division-I: Stony Brook split a doubleheader against UMBC Saturday, winning game one 11-3, and losing game two, 6-8. Greg Marino had a strong performance on the mound in their victory, earning his fourth win on the season by pitching 7 innings and only allowing three runs. The bats poured it on as well, Michael Wilson and Brandon Alamo each had three hits. Johnny Decker drove in four runs out of the sixth-spot in the lineup. Game two was especially disappointing as they took a 5-0 lead in the top half of the first, before ultimately surrendering the lead in the 6th. They will f...
by James Ryder The start of Saturday’s game between the South Shore Sharks and New York Storm at Cantiague Park featured cold temperatures and scattered winds. The weather wouldn’t end up being the only unpredictable event to take place however as the Sharks managed to make the late comeback in a 6-4 victory. Liam Collins pitched for the Sharks and in the top of the first got off to a rough start. The Storms’ Dylan Rhein worked a 3-2 count to get a lead-off walk followed by 3-2 single to shallow left from Maz Mieszeiski shortly after Rhein went to second base on a wild pitch. With Liam Daly up to the plate, Rhein stole third base but would be thrown out at home plate by third baseman Jimmy Manzella on a Daly fielder’s choice ground ball. With Dennis Kelly up to bat, Daly then stole s...
(Today’s game coverage is brought to you by Muddy Locker Sports. Please check them out by clicking here!) In a crucial ECC double header this afternoon at Angelo Lorenzo Field, LIU Post and NYIT split the two games with NYIT taking the first game and LIU Post salvaging the split in the second. Here’s how it went down: Game 1: LIU Post sent ace James Varela to the mound against a high-powered NYIT lineup, who countered with Chris Mott. The Pioneers got off to a quick start in the first with a RBI singles by Dave Brehm and Anthony Vaglica. They added another run in the third on an RBI ground out off the bat of Jimmy Mendyk. With their ace on the hill, it appeared like that would be enough but Varela did not have his best stuff on this afternoon. The Bears forced Varela’s pi...
With the monsoon yesterday, there was not much action. I was ready to head over to Brookville for the big ECC four-game set between LIU Post and NYIT but then the rains came. It was a little disappointing, they will play two today and two tomorrow as many teams will. As I’m sitting here typing, I see a sunny sky which means a full day of baseball. In the meantime, here’s the recap of the two teams that were on the road yesterday. Division-I: Hofstra had their six-game win streak snapped by CAA-rival James Madison University by the score of 8-6. Jack Jett got the start for them, and he struggled through 3.2 IP, allowing 4 earned runs on six hits and a walk. They trailed 3-0, but the game was far from over. Austin Gauthier inched them closer with a two-run shot in the fourth inni...
