May is always chaos for Long Island baseball. With the combination of Division-III conference championships intersecting with Division-II postseason this week, which turns into Division-II Regionals intersecting with Division-I postseason and high school postseason next week which turns into the Long Island Championships for Class AA, A, B and C. Needless to say it’s a crazy time for us, but you have to love it. As opposed to the Power Rankings, we are going to do something different. That’s because this deep into the season, it’s pretty much clear how the teams stack up. Here’s what you can follow along with this week. *Note: The ECC playoff seeds will be set following today’s Queens @ LIU Post games. Monday: Queens @ LIU Post 3pm (ECC Regular Season Finale) ...
Division-I: Hofstra was fortunate to come out of Saturday with a double header split at the hands of Elon. In game one, they were defeated 7-0. Throughout the game, the only strung together six hits and suffered four errors defensively. In game two of the series, Hofstra bounced back as they won 6-4. This win was highlighted by their pitching. Ryan Rue earned his third win of the year, as he threw six shutout innings allowing just five hits. Andrew Mundy got the three inning save in relief. Hofstra now stands at 14-28 on the year. They play LIU Brooklyn on Tuesday. In two one-run games, Fordham had a highly stressful Saturday of baseball. In game one of their double header, they fell 2-1 to George Mason. After scoring two runs in the first inning of the game, their bats went silent. George...
A constant drizzle on this cloudy Saturday morning could not detract from an otherwise fantastic day, as Rocky Point and Mount Sinai met for their annual Live Like Susie fundraiser game. The game, played each year since 2014, is in honor of a Rocky Point alumna, Susie Facini, who passed away suddenly in 2011. The proceeds from this game fund a scholarship in Susie’s name that is awarded to a Rocky Point student each year who exhibits many of the qualities that Susie did. Susie was described as the kind of person who’s presence could just light up a room. In a pre-game ceremony, Rocky Point head coach Anthony Anzalone said “it just epitomizes, in a world of craziness, how you’re supposed to live your life. She just made things so much better when she walked into a room.” Both Rocky Point an...
While the calendar says May, yesterday certainly didn’t feel like it. I was at the Skyline Conference tournament at Farmingdale which featured one rain delay of 50 minutes and another delay to get 35 bags of quick dry on the field in the middle of the game. Regardless, they got all three games in and we march on. There was plenty of other action around the island and here’s how it went down: Division-I: Fordham won a crucial Atlantic-10 match up against George Mason in the first game of a three-game set. It took them 10 innings, but they came away victorious, 6-3. Matt Mikulski started and went six innings, allowing three ER while striking out 10 and walking two. They were trailing 3-1 in the fifth inning, but tied it up on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Jake MacKenzie. The ...
Farmingdale, NY– It was a long day of baseball in day one of the Skyline Conference double-elimination tournament, but aside some rain delays and thick fog, there was no surprised. Here’s how it went down: Game 1: Alex Mesaros had the go-ahead hit in the fifth inning. Here he is speaking about the win pic.twitter.com/1PZk6ecroZ — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 3, 2019 Christian Tessitore and Andrew Spinnenweber squared off in a battle of hard-throwing RHPs. Merchant Marines got off to a quick 1-0 start in the second inning when Kyle Cunningham broke on contact with the infield drawn in on a ground ball to shortstop off the bat of Matt Mundorf. It seemed aggressive, but his speed was the difference as he beat the throw home. They added another run in the second inning ...
Today begins the three-day, double-elimination Skyline Conference tournament at Farmingdale State College. The event was held there last year, as well as 2016. Both years the Championship was captured by St. Joseph’s College, but with Wednesday’s 10-9 loss at Maritime, they will not have a chance to do so this season. The first game will be held at 1pm, between No. 3 Old Westbury and No. 2 USMMA. Following that will be No. 4 Maritime and No. 1 Farmingdale State. The losers of those games will play at 7pm tonight in an elimination game. The winners will advance to play at 10am on Saturday. Let’s look at the two match ups. No. 3 Old Westbury @ No. 2 USMMA These two teams met on Sunday, April 14 at Old Westbury, with the teams splitting the double header. USMMA took Game 1, ...
It hasn’t been a great season for Eastport-South Manor, coming off an appearance in the Suffolk County AA Finals last May. You would never know by their performance today, as freshman Jake Deslauriers pitched mature beyond his years. The young RHP was efficient and dominant in a 4-0 shutout over a solid Kings Park team. He fired a three-hit shutout, not allowing a runner past second base in the game. “I really thought I would do well today,” he said. “That’s what I was planning to do. I tried to get my team a win–we’ve been struggling, but I had to go out and do something. They have a tough lineup but I had to find a way to work through it,” he added. His offense go him a run to work with early. After the first two batters were retired by Chr...

SUNY Maritime overcame deficits of 4-0, 7-3 and 9-8 to complete an impressive 10-9 comeback victory against No. 5 St. Joseph’s-LI, the reigning champions on a walk-off walk by Shane Sullivan in the bottom of the ninth. With the game knotted at 3-3 in the sixth inning, Sean Paprocki stepped up the bases loaded and a chance to give the Old Westbury Panthers the lead. The Division-grad laced a two-run double down the right field line to give the Panthers a 5-3 lead. They continued to tack on that inning including a two-run single later in the inning by Mike Manetta and a two-run HR by Shaun Kaminski to break it wide open. Old Westbury starting pitcher Adam Heidenfelder was working very hard, he needed 111 pitches to get through six innings but he was able to make the big pitches when he needed to. He finished with eight strikeouts and eight hits allowed with two walks. Heidenfelder was Old Westbury’s best pitcher throughout the season, he compiled an ERA of 1.25 and a K:BB ratio of 33:6. Adam Heidenfe...
Chris Siklas is our @BsbLifestyle101 player of the game after giving his team the lead in the top of the 7th. He finished with three hits & 3RBI. pic.twitter.com/CPe1GF7wHW — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 30, 2019 Every time Massapequa and Oceanside meet, it’s always a treat. As predicted, Tuesday afternoon’s game did not disappoint by any means. In a game for the ages, Oceanside topped Massapequa by a score of 7-6 to take game two of the series. This wasn’t a normal win by any means for Oceanside, this was the result of a hard fought battle. After suffering a tough loss on Monday, the Sailors wasted no time getting runs on the board. In the opening frame of the game, Austin Vlahakis started the Oceanside rally with an RBI single to left field. The next b...
