Baseball, not regarded as a contact sport, has made every effort to remove contact plays from the game such as plays at the plate and breaking up a double play. One instance that is impossible to prevent is instances of players on the same team colliding at full speed. During a game last spring at Stony Brook, LIU outfielder Seth Surrett was seriously injured while colliding with his teammate who was also pursuing a fly ball. by Mike Merolle A 10-run comeback win, a senior day, and multiple doubleheaders made for an eventful college baseball Saturday. Here’s how it went down.  Division-I: St. John’s 9 — Xavier 3  The Red Storm played their second game of the series against Xavier and prevailed, 9-3.  Matt McCormick put Xavier up 1-0 in the first with an RBI single and that was the only run scored in the game until the fourth inning. The Johnnies took the lead with two unearned runs off a throwing error by the Xavier infield. In the sixth, Xavier’s Connor Misch hit a solo shot to tie it but St. John’s rallied in the seventh.  Errors and wild pitches allowed Garrett Scavelli, Chad Falcon, and Anthony Brienza to score three making it 5-2. by Max Edelman Hofstra:  The Hofstra University Pride used a four run fifth inning to take down the North Carolina A&T Aggies at home 5-3 in the series opening matchup between the two teams.  The Pride, who were down 2-1 going into the fifth, used a Santino Rosso three run homer and a Michael Florides RBI single to take down the Aggies. Matt Pelcher brought in the only other run with an RBI groundout in the second inning. Michael O’Hanlon started the game for the Pride, tossing 7.2 innings, striking out seven and allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits. Mike McKenna picked up his sixth save in the victory. A few Division-I teams saw themselves digging out of an early deficit, Division-II and Division-III saw many doubleheaders, and a walk-off home run earned a team a victory.  Division-I  St. John’s 8 — Butler 7  The Johnnies made a comeback in Saturday’s matchup against Butler at Jack Kaiser Stadium.  Butler got the early 4-0 lead after getting six hits in the first inning. St. John’s got going in the bottom of the fourth. Marty Higgins hit a single and stole second to put him in scorer’s position. by Max Edelman Division-I: Hofstra: The Hofstra University Pride used a seven run fifth inning to take down the Campbell Fighting Camels 11-7 at home in the first of a three game series between the two teams. The Pride, who were trailing by three entering the fifth, saw their offense explode en route to their fourth conference victory of the season. The offensive heroes for Hofstra were Steve Harrington, who had three RBIs including a solo home run, and Joseph Mennella who’s two RBIs came on a two run homer. Luke Masiuk also came up big for Hofstra with a pair of RBIs. Michael O’Hanlon recorded his third victory of the season on the mound. More below on how the local teams did in the Saturday roundabout.  Division-I  St. Johns 15 — UConn 7  The St. John’s Red Storm have their first win in Storrs, CT since 2013. They defeated the UConn Huskies 15-7 in a Saturday matchup.  Garrett Scavelli got the Johnnies on the board in the second inning with his solo home run to make it 1-0. However, UConn answered with four runs thanks to Korey Morton’s solo shot, Matt Malcolm’s two-run homer, and an RBI groundout.  Luke Orbon hit a three-run shot to tie the game at four in the third. by Max Edelman Hofstra: The Hofstra Pride were defeated in the opening game of a three-game road series against the Elon Phoenix 17-6. The two teams combined for 23 runs, however, Hofstra’s pitching once again let them down, as they failed to keep the Phoenix off the scoresheet. Alex McCoy continued his hot streak, connecting on a solo home run in the contest. Matt Pelcher had three RBIs in the game as well. Will Kennedy, Michael Brown, and Steve Harrington each one RBI apiece. Michael O’Hanlon started the game for the Pride and struggled in what was his second loss of the season.
