Colby Schmidt on Manhasset’s 5-2 victory over Garden City pic.twitter.com/vI4KSI8YqK Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 29, 2018 Manhasset defeated Garden City, 5-2 on Thursday, ending their two-game losing streak. In a chilly afternoon game, starter Colby Schmidt threw an impressive six innings to earn his first win of the season. The senior righty who missed all last season with a back injury came into full form today, commanding all of his pitches and keeping hitters off balance. Right fielder Winston Park plated the first run of the game in the second inning, lining a double down the line and setting the table with runners at second and third. With two runners on, centerfielder Jay Schlaefer lifted a potential homeru to deep centerfield, only to have it robbed by G...
by Frank Farnacci A chilly March afternoon did not deter Half Hollow Hills East’s Reis Henderson in his first varsity start as he led Hills East to a 2-1 victory over Smithtown West in Dix Hills today. Henderson persevered while working in-and-out of trouble through the first three innings hurling a two hitter with seven timely strikeouts over 5.2 IP. “He had a little bit of a high pitch count early as he worked in-and-out of trouble”, said Hills East Manager, Tim Belz. “He gave up only two hits which was phenomenal and kept us in the whole game. His strikeouts were in big spots and he really gutted it out.” The game started with Henderson walking the first two batters but then he settled down getting consecutive fielder’s choices and a foul out to keep Smithtown West off the scoreboard....
Mark Faello on his no-hitter (6-innings) against Herricks pic.twitter.com/x9o8kGK80X Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 28, 2018 It wasn’t EXACTLY the real deal, but it was close enough. Reigning Diamond Award winner Mark Faello fired a six inning no-hitter in Plainview JFK‘s 10-0 mercy-rule victory over Herricks on Tuesday afternoon. He struck out 12 batters and walked three. Last season, he no-hit the same team while compiling 19 strikeouts. The game was much closer than the score would indicate, actually, for much of the game. Faello smacked a two-run HR over the center field fence in the 1st inning to give himself an early 2-0 lead. The score would stay that way and Herricks was able to make Faello work hard in the fifth inning. They forced him to throw 28 pi...
Final: Sayville 7, Bayport-Blue Point 3 WP: Brock Murtha (6 IP, 1 R, 6 K) pic.twitter.com/VvzOh6BCLv Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 27, 2018 Even when he doesn’t have his best stuff, Brock Murtha can find a way. On the home opener on a chilly afternoon against a playoff team, the reigning League 6 MVP and Notre Dame-commit put together a solid line of 6 IP, 1 R, 6 K, 2 H, 4 BB but he did benefit from a huge outfield assist from left fielder Dom Prevosto who fired a strike to end a bases loaded threat in the fifth inning with Sayville up 5-1. “It was good to get our first win as a team,” said Murtha. “I mean, I didn’t have my best stuff and I struggled to the plate a little bit but I got some great teammates out here making plays, throwing gu...
Today was a day players have had circled on their calendar for months. I know I was the type to circle March 30 once the schedule was announced during my playing days. After seeing the level of excitement on the player’s faces and the huge turnout, I think there’s plenty more people that share that passion for the game as me. It was a unique Opening Day in that so many fields were unplayable that Moriches Complex featured four games. It was a huge benefit for me considering two of Long Island’s top arms in Bobby Vath and Roman Dorosh were both on the mound at the same time. Both were among my top candidates for the Paul Gibson Award and they both were lights-out in their first outing. It made for must-see action. I’ll give you my takeaways from those two games as we...
.@berlandsen96 with Molloy starting pitcher Kevin Hiss pic.twitter.com/iOi5TkcrtV Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 25, 2018 It was a very successful afternoon for the Molloy Lions, as they completed the series sweep over ECC-rival Bridgeport with a 2-0 win in Game One and a 5-2 win in Game Two. This weekend at Mitchell Athletic Complex, the Molloy Lions climbed back up to .500 (11-11), start conference play at 4-0 and extend their winning streak to five games. “I’m proud of the way the pitching was,” said head coach Joe Fucarino. “Our whole goal was to get the pitching right for conference [play], and we got four quality starts back-to-back-to-back-to-back.” Game one was a pitchers duel from the beginning, but Molloy senior Kevin His...
Final: Hofstra 5, UNCW 3 WP: John Rooney S: Chris Weiss pic.twitter.com/UkrMPnd1OU Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 23, 2018 Friday night baseball under the lights in the south. That is college baseball at its finest. Tonight it was an up-and-coming teams from the northeast, though, that stole the spotlight. The red-hot Hofstra Pride (10-4) defeated UNC-Wilmington (14-7) by the score of 5-3, with the go-ahead hit coming in the eighth inning by sophomore Rob Weissheier to score Teddy Cillis. In front of dozens of MLB scouts, Hofstra’s ace LHP John Rooney out dueled the reigning CAA Pitcher of the Year, Alex Royalty. Rooney went seven innings, allowing 3 ER on four hits, two walks with seven strikeouts to improve his program-record of career strikeouts to 206. Hofstra ...
Final: Adelphi 10, LIU Post 6 WP: Danny Taggart Brandon Morse: 2-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 R pic.twitter.com/6mSsOvgmfF Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 19, 2018 Despite being a non-conference game, this was a weekday game nobody wanted to lose. You could see the energy level was different and there was some chirping that’s typically reserved for the rivalry games. Adelphi channeled their motivation into a 10-6 victory over LIU Post in a battle between Nassau County Div-II programs. Early on, Adelphi was in charge as they took a 4-0 lead against LHP Noah Lorenzo, who entered the day with a 2.67 ERA and has been as steady as they come. After a 1-2-3 first inning, he ran into trouble when the Panthers smacked back-to-back doubles, the latter of which was Thomas Colombo who drove...
In the rubber match of a three-game set, the UConn Huskies take the victory over the St. John’s Red Storm, 3-1, at Jack Kaiser Stadium. This concludes the first series between the two schools since the realignment of the modern Big East Conference. St. John’s has lost five of their last six games losing back-to-back series at Kansas and against UConn. Although two days away from the first day of spring, temperatures stayed in the 30s today in Queens, NY as they have all weekend. It had the makings of a pitcher’s duel in the first half of this game as both starting pitchers allowed a combined 5 hits after four scoreless innings. St. John’s struck first with a RBI single in the fifth by senior Rob Boselli III scoring graduate student Luke Stampfl from second. That pro...
Vito Friscia on his walk-off HR to give Hofstra the dramatic 9-8 victory over Albany pic.twitter.com/4uJpcLxSBV Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 17, 2018 When you’re hot, you’re hot! Junior designated hitter Vito Friscia smacked an opposite field, walk-off HR in the tenth inning to give Hofstra a dramatic 9-8 victory over Albany in 10 innings. Trailing 7-1 in the seventh inning, things were looking bleak for Hofstra if they had any hopes of extending their eight-game win streak. That was until a four-run seventh inning and two in the eighth tied the game up and made it a new ball game. Albany re-gained the lead in the top of the ninth, but once again Hofstra answered back in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single by Justin Smith to score Daniel Page. “I...
Today was Day 2 of the “Division-II vs Cancer Tournament” in Cary, NC at the beautiful Team USA National Training Complex. Below are my observations from today’s games which included LIU Post vs. Findlay, NYIT vs Findlay, LIU Post vs Franklin Pierce and St. Thomas Aquinas vs College of St. Rose. LIU Post vs Findlay: Noah Lorenzo was very impressive, he just did what he does–he attacked the strike zone with 78 MPH two-seam fastballs and 67 MPH change ups down in the zone. You can scoff at the velocity, but the sophomore LHP has routinely made lineups of all talent levels look foolish dating back to his days at St. John the Baptist. He wound up pitching six innings, striking out nine and allowing just two runs. Most of his strikeouts came on change ups dotted on the o...
