Mike Pokorny on the 4-2 victory for Calhoun pic.twitter.com/WFSUDXYqGR Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 11, 2018 With Calhoun leading 4-2 in the top of the sixth inning, Tyler Patterson stepped to the plate as the potential go-ahead run. He drove one to deep left and the Calhoun dugout collectively gasped. The ball was caught at the warning track by Jake Edwards to retire the side and also allowed their dugout to breathe a sigh of relief. The game was a match up of two talented pitchers. Charlie Cucchiara, named to our Preseason All-Long Island list, is coming off an All-County season as a sophomore for East Meadow against Mike Porcelli, who was an All-League starter last season. Porcelli allowed consecutive singles to start the game but worked out of the jam unscathed. Ca...
McHugh on his heroics and the big victory for Commack pic.twitter.com/iPsFTVnEsG Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 9, 2018 If there was one person to avoid seeing with the bases loaded, two-outs protecting a one-run lead it’s TCU-commit, Tim McHugh, who happens to have the best raw power of any player on Long Island. The 6’4″ slugger took the first pitch for a ball before connecting and launching a go-ahead grand slam over the center field wall to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 6-3 lead for the Commack Cougars, who entered the inning trailing 3-1 with only two hits in the game. Reliever Drew Vincent came on to protect the lead and record the victory with a 1-2-3 seventh inning. The game started out with both pitchers dominating. Jake Krzemienski started for the...
Game 1 Timely hitting and a dominant performance by starter David Otero Jr. helped push Farmingdale to a 3-0 victory over Old Westbury in game one of the double header. A pitchers duel with a little bit of defense helped keep the score at 0-0 until the seventh inning. Farmingdale starter David Otero Jr. pitched a complete game, giving up no runs and four hits. He ran into trouble in the sixth inning when second baseman Jesse Russo lined a triple in the gap to start the inning. He settled in after that, inducing two ground balls to second baseman Tyler Schrimpf. Schrimpf finished out the inning by making a run-saving diving catch down the right field line to preserve the game at 0-0. The bats for both teams were silent for most of the day. Farmingdale registered seven hits while Old Westbur...
LIU Post pitched their way to two wins in a double-header against Queens College on Saturday, taking the first game 3-1 before winning the second 2-0. The first game was dominated pretty thoroughly by Post sophomore Noah Lorenzo. The southpaw went 8.1 innings and struck out five while allowing eight baserunners to reach. He left with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth after throwing almost 120 pitches, but redshirt senior reliever Brian Tinney came in and struck out the final two batters in emphatic fashion to give the Pioneers the victory. Lorenzo improved to 4-2 for the year on the win and lowered his ERA from 4.06 to 3.59. Zach Fritz’s patient effort at the plate was the catalyst for Post’s offense in the first game, as the first basemen went 2-3 with an RBI double, a run scored o...
Behind junior John Rooney’s complete-game shutout, the Hofstra Pride defeated the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens 9-0 in Hofstra’s CAA home opener. The win snapped a three-game losing streak and a seven-game losing streak against Delaware. “I thought it was literally a complete game played by us,” said Hofstra head coach John Russo. “I don’t know if we’ve played a better game.” Rooney needed just 102 pitches, allowing two hits and one walk on the day striking out 11. With that, Rooney lowered his season ERA to 1.29, and improved his record to 5-0. Junior catcher Matt Siedem went 3-4 with a double, a solo home run, three RBI and a stolen base. Siedem’s stolen base and home run were both his first of the season and fell a triple shy of ...
Final: Division 13, North Shore 2 (5 innings) WP: Robert Bradley pic.twitter.com/J5wRdeZVVP Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 6, 2018 With one swing of the bat by James Horodecki, Division made a huge statement. In what promised to be a tightly-contested rubber match between two of the top teams in Nassau County Class A, it was the Blue Dragons of Division HS who came out swinging early-and-often against a strong North Shore team that opened up its season with a three-game sweep outscoring Floral Park 33-2. Six strikeouts for Franklin Parra through two innings pic.twitter.com/9zwKhzkYW1 Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 5, 2018 If today was meant to be a showcase of Franklin Parra, Centereach clearly did not get the memo. They defeated Copiague‘s highly-touted LHP by the score of 10-0, behind Eddie Bassett‘s arm and Ryan Mahnke and Brian Honka’s bats. Parra, who is committed to San Jacinto Community College, was far from disappointing. He struck out eight batters over three innings and touched 92 MPH with his heater in the first inning. He was overpowering, but Centereach did work his pitch count up early. He walked one in the first, and another in the second. The Centereach Cougars got on the board in the third on a fielder’s choice off the bat of SS R...
Robbie Keane‘s played through sleet, through rain and through snow–but nothing quite like the wind today. The senior SS had a huge day at the plate in Farmingdale‘s 13-9 victory over previously undefeated Port Washington. He admitted it was aided–at least in part–by a 45+ MPH sustained wind through out the day. He smacked a game-tying three-run home run in the fifth inning to right to even the score, 8-8, and then the go-ahead two-run triple to left field to give Farmingdale a lead of 10-9. “It helped and hurt us a lot,” he said following the game. “In the field we had a lot of balls just swirling in the air–lot of balls we should’ve caught just dropped and it helped us a little when we were batting–balls just carried. I...
Maryland-commit David Falco launches a 3-R shot and Center Moriches opens up a 4-0 lead in the first pic.twitter.com/FnrsDZsWf0 Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 4, 2018 It looked more similar to the opening credits of a Alfred Hitchcock movie, but there was a baseball played in the thick fog and light drizzle at Moriches Complex this morning, which did not deter Stony Brook-commit Liam Pulsipher at all. “It was pretty difficult,” said the senior southpaw following the big victory over Hampton Bays. “It was slippery but you know you have to play with what you’re given and over come those types of things,” he added. He walked two batters in the first inning–due to the slippery turf on the artificial mound–but he settled in and fired ...
Final: Hauppauge 2, Rocky Point 0 WP: Kevin Sambuco (2-hit shutout) pic.twitter.com/CuxDipp61g Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 3, 2018 With the forecast calling for heavy rain beginning at 1pm, there was a 3-hour window to get in the game. Hauppauge starter Kevin Sambuco did it in less than half. The senior RHP carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but settled for a two-hit shutout in Hauppauge’s 2-0 victory over new League 6 rival Rocky Point, needing only 69 pitches to record 21 outs to improve the Eagles’ to 3-1 on the young season. He was starting opposite Bridgeport-commit Joey Grillo, who was named to our Preseason All-Long Island list last month. Grillo and Sambuco traded zeros for the first five innings; doing so in different ways. Hauppauge made ...
Ryan Kuskowski on his walk-off HR against Mercy pic.twitter.com/XszI1SAsxh Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 31, 2018 In what took nearly four hours, Ryan Kuskowski wasted no time sending one over the fence in the tenth inning delivering the victory for NYIT. The Bears trailed 5-0 before they came to bat in the first inning, but never wavered in their optimism and were able to complete the comeback to win Game 1 of their double header against Mercy by the score of 11-10 in 10 innings. Starter Matt Bartnik departed with two outs in the first inning and the Bears trailing by five, but reliever D.J. Masuck came in and fired 5.1 shutout innings to allow the Bears’ bats get to work. They scored three in the first, one in the second and two in the third to take a 7-5 lead a...
Darwin Tavarez talking to @zackpenn4 on ASA’s victory over Nassau CC @asacollege pic.twitter.com/bwAWSw5tak Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 31, 2018 A gorgeous Saturday for baseball at Mitchel Field turned into a route as ASA College took down Nassau Community College Lions, 17-3. NCC started the game off well, grabbing a 3-0 lead after the first two innings behind a pair of ASA errors. With two runners in scoring position after a pair of walks and subsequent stolen bases, Nassaus second basemen Brian Perez reached on a fielders choice to third that scored two runs after ASAs third basemen overthrew first. Unfortunately, that would be the highlight of the game for NCC as their bats went dead after the second inning. The Lions plated only 3 hits on ...
