Walk-off single by Tyler Acker and Sachem East wins 6-5 in 10 innings ! pic.twitter.com/Jd3BEX8H2x — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 1, 2019 In a game featuring several high-profile players, it was sophomore Ty Acker who was the difference. The back-and-forth affair that featured five lead changes went 10 innings ended on a bloop single by Acker to score catcher Ryan Micheli and send the team into a frenzy. The story line entering the game was the matchup between sophomore stud Rafe Schlesinger and Molloy-commit A.J. Verga, who was named to our Preseason All-Long Island list. Schlesinger was understandably nervous in the first couple innings pitching in front of a big crowd with three Division-I coaches holding radar guns behind the plate. Floyd capitalized right away on an RBI ...

It’s been 36 years since Northport has won a Suffolk County Championship. They came awfully close in 2016, when they were defeated in three games by West Islip, but they came away just short. In 1983, when John DeMartini was still the JV coach, they not only won Suffolk County, but defeated Bethpage in the Long Island Championship. The winning pitcher in that game? Rick Vichroski. Rick improved his record to 12-0 that season, his third year on varsity. The Tigers leaned on his arm heavily that season, as he accounted for 46 percent of his team’s wins on the way to an appearance in the New York State semifinals. Vichroski, 53, is now the owner/operator of Human Healthy Vending and lives in Rhode Island, but his memories of his playing days are still cherished. And they did not e...

Miller Place ended 2018 with a sour-taste in their mouth and have high hopes for this season. They opened up 2019 on a great note with a 4-0 shutout over Westhampton Beach. Gavin McAlonie fired four shutout innings for the win. “He can do it all,” said Head Coach Ricky Caputo. “He’s an outstanding pitcher as you saw today–At the plate, when he gets two strikes I almost feel like he’s getting better. He’s going to play third base, he’ll play a little short when Kevin Bowrosen gets on the mound. If it wasn’t for him and his talent and his versatility, we’d be a whole different ballclub,” he added. They got on the board in the third inning on an RBI ground out by McAlonie to score Jordan Syperski. They added two more on RBI sin...

Final: Nassau 5, Suffolk 1 (8 innings) pic.twitter.com/gHUKEbUL2W — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 22, 2019 After six innings of squandered opportunities, Nassau broke through in a big way in the seventh inning. T.J. Toscano got things started with an infield single and Mike Iacobellis sacrificed him into scoring position. A walk brought up Tucker Hahn, a big slugger who smoked one into the right-center field alley for an RBI double to tie up the game. Starting pitcher, Conor Jacoby, came up next and crushed a HR to break the tie and give Nassau a lead that they would not relinquish. An unusual call took one of the runs off the board, when Suffolk appealed that one of the runners failed to touch home plate and the umpire confirmed that was the case.
