Especially in the first inning. The scoring began in the first inning and that turned out to be the difference in this one. by Matthew Cataruzolo Yaphank, NY – The East Coast Lumberjacks defeated Beast Apicella by a score of 9-1 on Friday night to kick off the Northeast Elite 16u Tournament at Lasorda Legacy Park in Yaphank, New York. Apicella’s starting pitcher Matthew Brienza faced off against Lumberjack’s pitcher Matthew DeStefanis in what would eventually become a lopsided victory. Both pitchers held their competition in check for the first two innings. Apicella getting on the board first courtesy of an RBI single off the bat of Thomas Ford. C.J. In this mid morning game, The Adrenaline drew first blood. Harold Rodriguez drew a leadoff walk, stole 2 bases, and scored when today’s starting pitcher Evan Bailey grounded out to the shortstop to make it 1-0. Bailey took the mound in the bottom of the first and retired the side with ease. He set the tone early as he used a great mix of three pitches (Fastball, Changeup, Curveball) to keep the Legends off balance when he was on the mound.
