Rosenberg has been Wheatley’s ace for the past 1+ seasons but he was facing a tough opponent, New Haven-commit Michael Gatti, who entered the game with a 2-0 record, 0.00 ERA and 23 strikeouts over 10 innings. The two teams battled through harsh elements at Eisenhower Park, as there were multiple weather delays, including a delay for a brief shower of hail. However, it was Matt Sarni and MacArthur who came out on top, 2-0. Sarni was dominant for MacArthur, pitching a complete game, one-hit shutout, striking out seven batters and only allowing one walk. We’ve seen it time-and-time again, most notably that 2019 semifinals matchup at Ward Melville. This game did not feature nearly as much offense or ejections, but there was an exciting finish with an exclamation point from the captain. Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning against reliever Matt Mayer, Ward Melville captain Tom Ribaudo stepped to the plate after a 4-6-3 double play briefly took some of the life out of the home faithful. Between Brian Morrell‘s record-setting six no-hitters in 2016-’17 and then Aidan Crowley‘s back-to-back-to-back no-hitters in 2019, maybe there isn’t the same allure there once was. Billy Steele, their 2022 version of those aforementioned pitchers took a no-hitter through six innings, but was lifted in favor of LHP Nick Stella. He was one strike away from finishing it off, before Bayport-Blue Point ruined the bid and got on the board on an RBI double, briefly putting a scare into the hometown faithful....
