The pitching matchup featured John Ruchalski of Next Level and Michael Lombardo of Team Beast. They both matched zeros in the first inning as Ruchalski induced three groundouts and Lombardo induced two fly outs as well as being helped out by catcher Wyatt Fritton, who threw out a runner stealing. Both teams played well in each game but LIB ultimately came away with two wins. Despite a late rally by Team Francisco, it was Next Level who held on by the score of 4-3. Next Level sent JJ Gatti to the hill. He is coming off winning the first ever NYS CHSAA Championship with Chaminade last week and had one of the best seasons of any Long Island pitcher (7-1 record, 0.89 ERA, 54.2 IP, 70 Ks). 13u Connecticut Cubs Capture Inaugural Kings Point Classic
The 13u Connecticut Cubs defeated the LI Strong in a best-of-three series to capture the inaugural Kings Point Classic hosted by the United States Merchant Marine Academy. The Cubs played outstanding baseball in all facets of the game and won by the scores of 12-1 and 16-3. The Cubs are in their first year as an organization – but they are off to quite a strong start. Their first tournament was Memorial Day Weekend at the Field of Dreams in Iowa. Playing in a 34-team field, they compiled a record of 7-0 and captured first place. They followed that up with two more convincing wins to bring their overall record to an unblemished 9-0 on the season. The same can be said in the Spring Invitational game between the West Islip Lions and the West Warriors. This game was back-and-forth throughout the entire matchup until the Lions pushed away late to take a 10-4 victory in the 7 inning game. The big philosophy from both sides was to work walks and get on base and then try to steal bags to get in positions to score.
