Suffolk CC Crushes Tompkins Cortland

They called the game between Suffolk CC and Tompkins Cortland CC at nearly 11 P.M. last night after seven innings with Suffolk leading 11-3. This was the second game of a double header for Tompkins, and Suffolk’s fist game since March 4. Designated Hitter Nicholas Siragusa helped Suffolk jump ahead in the first inning when he drove a two-run opposite-field home run over the fence in right center field. They never looked back from there. TCC scored a few runs of their own, but with the way that Suffolk was hitting there was never any doubt in the outcome. It felt like Suffolk was loading the bases ever inning. In the third a run came in when Matthew Riselvate got plunked in the back, and  a bad throw on an attempted double play caused two more runs to come in rather than get Tompkins ...

Travis Bruinsma Fires Gem to Salvage Split Against Staten Island

SUNY Maritime Privateers faced off against the College of Staten Island Dolphins in a nautically-themed doubleheader today. Maritime lost game one after an incredible comeback by Staten Island, but rallied to win the second game behind the masterful pitching of Travis Bruinsma. Maritime wasted no time in game one scoring three runs in the first. Shortstop Matt Costleigh smacked a leadoff home run. Costleigh’s shot to right center got the Privateers started, and they added on runs with an RBI ground out and an RBI single by Aaron Schiavoni and Phil Russo, respectively. They added another run in the second on a sacrifice fly from Costleigh, then another in the fourth on a single up the middle by Chris Deddo. Maritime was up five to nothing after 5 1/3 innings thanks to the pitching of ...

Why Pitch Counts in Youth and High School Baseball Are Important

By Luga Podesta, MD Podesta was the team physician for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1990-’06) and Los Angeles Angels (2010-’13). He is currently the Director of Sports Medicine at St. Charles Orthopedics and he is our Injury Prevention Expert. It’s March and another baseball season has come. The difference this year however is that the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and specifically, New York State’s (NYSPHSAA) new pitch restriction rules for the spring 2017 baseball season take effect. Each member state association has been required to develop their own policy on pitching restrictions based on the number of pitches a player can throw during a game and the rest required after pitching. These new pitch restriction rules are designed to provide players’ ...

March 11 Game Recaps

Another wave of snow has officially hit the surface of Long Island leaving none of our home turf available for battle. However, six teams were on the road on Saturday for a combined 11 games given that five of those teams played doubleheaders. It was a rough day for the hometown groups as they combined for only three wins in a possible 11. Even with the warmer weather down south, these teams still struggled to heat up. St. John’s splits with Liberty in Lynchburg In game one of this doubleheader, St. John’s was able to pull out their 11th win of the season with a 4-2 victory. Eight of the team’s ten hits came off the bats of Robbie Knightes, Gui Gingras, and the red-hot John Valente. Josh Shaw and Troy Dixon both also had a hit each. The Red Storm scored the first runs in the game in the to...

Stony Brook Takes Two in Dramatic Doubleheader

It was a dramatic couple of games for the Stony Brook Seawolves on Thursday as they took both games in a doubleheader against LIU-Brooklyn by the scores of 15-11 and 1-0. “I’ll take two wins any day,” Assistant Coach Joe Pennucci said. “The team did well in being resilient coming back scoring runs when we needed too, second game played good defense and pitched well.” The first game was a back-and-forth slug fest and the second game was the ultimate pitcher’s duel. Stony Brook was able to improve their record to 4-9 on the season as they attempt to get back on track after a rough start. Game one consisted of lackluster defense and stellar offense. With the score being 15-11, you can say that it was not a great day to be a pitcher. Bret Clarke had a rough outing surrendering eight runs...

Hofstra’s Offense Explodes in 14-3 Win over NYIT

Sometimes you just need some good home cookin’. That was the remedy for the Hofstra Pride, who ended a four-game losing streak with a 15-hit attack in a 14-3 win over NYIT. David Leiderman led the way with four hits in five at bats and Tom Archer drove in four runs and Vinnie Costello added three RBI as well. “It was really nice to get some quality at bats against a very good pitcher in (Elias) Martinez,” said Head Coach John Russo. “Happy to see Archer, Leiderman and (Vito) Friscia have good days,” he added. Friscia got the scoring started with an opposite field HR to right field to put the Pride up 1-0. It displayed how strong the sophomore catcher is that he barely squared the ball up and it still went soaring over the fence to the opposite field. The Bears...

David Real’s HR Leads Stony Brook to 7-2 Win over NYIT

With the rain pouring down, trailing 2-1 in the seventh and the Stony Brook Sea Wolves staring at the potential of falling to 1-9 with hard-throwing Frank Valentino on the hill, it was a huge moment in the game. Pinch hitter Chris Hamilton ripped an RBI double to tie the game up in the seventh and catcher David Real broke the tie with a two-run shot to left field in the eighth inning to propel the Sea Wolves to the 7-2 win over NYIT this afternoon at Joe Nathan Field. NYIT got out to an early 1-0 lead with an RBI double by two-time All-Long Island third baseman Louis Mele to score Frank Sanacore. In the home half of the first, the Sea Wolves tied it up on a solo shot by freshman Michael Wilson, who is now hitting .353 with a .500 SLG through 34 at bats.   Both starting pitchers, Kevin...

Santiago, Adelphi Down New Haven 8-5

When TJ Santiago is on the hill, the Adelphi Panthers are a tough team to beat. The Panthers’ ace fired 5.2 IP, allowing zero earned runs with five strike outs in Adelphi’s 8-5 win over NE-10 rival New Haven. “Fastball and splitter were the duo today,” said the Linden, N.J. native. The Panthers offense got off to a quick start against Vincent Aprea (Comsewogue ’13) with a three-spot in the first inning. Eric Hassell ripped an RBI single to drive in Rob Vani. After the Panthers got an unearned run across the plate, Brett Malm drove in Brandon Morse with an RBI single. Santiago was very sharp out of the gate, allowing only one hit through four innings. In the bottom of the fourth, the Panthers broke through with four more runs. Kory Cassara smacked an opposite f...

March 4 Recap

by Mike Guido After a number of games being cancelled due to weather, it was a tough day for Long Island baseball.  Though Long Island went 1-5 on the day, there were some bright spots in particular for the teams competing yesterday. We are still early in and growth is visible with these ball clubs. Division I: Fordham Splits With Canisius The Rams snapped a six-game losing streak on a walkoff single by Brian Goulard to score Reiss Knehr. It was a wild game, with the Rams battling back to tie the game three times when trailing including erasing a 4-1 deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning and a 5-4 deficit in the bottom of the eighth. Ryan Mahoney‘s two-run shot in the sixth inning tied the ballgame up at 4-4 and Mark Donadio‘s RBI double scored Justin Bardwell to tie the ga...

Cody McPartland Stymies Adelphi, Leads Franklin Pierce to 7-3 Win

Long Island native Cody McPartland picked up right where he left off in 2016 with Dowling. The senior RHP came on in relief for Franklin Pierce in the fifth inning of a 3-1 game and fired four shutout innings with six strikeouts in the Ravens’ 7-3 victory over Adelphi. “Coming out of the ‘pen isn’t much different,” he said in regards to pitching in relief verse starting the game. “You still have to come in and throw strikes regardless of if you start the game, come in the fifth or close the game out, you still need the same outcome…outs!” The Ravens took advantage of some miscues by the Panthers’ defense early in the game. Panthers’ starter Ed Baram had really good stuff, but attempted to throw a runner out at third on a bunt and ...

St. John’s Continues Red-Hot Start

by Troy Mauriello If the St. John’s Red Storm weren’t on the national radar after a 7-0 start to their season, they certainly are now. The No. 16 ranked Johnnies came from behind yesterday to knock off No. 7 North Carolina on the road, giving them their best start since 1981, the days of John Franco and Frank Viola. Yesterday’s victory was anything but easy for St. John’s. After outscoring their opponents 63-16 through their first seven wins this season, the Red Storm actually trailed 4-2 heading into the seventh inning in Chapel Hill. It appeared as though the perfect start and upset bid were falling apart before the Johnnies got a jolt of offense thanks to the long ball. In that seventh, after John Valente walked to lead off the inning, Jesse Berardi smashed a two-run, game-tying home ru...

T.J. Santiago Dominates in Adelphi’s 5-2 Win on Opening Day

More than one player referred to Opening Day as a holiday during pregame warmups. Adelphi’s starting pitcher, TJ Santiago, had the energy of a kid on Christmas morning but his splitter acted more like the Grinch. The senior RHP was lights out (7 IP, 9 K, 0 R, 2 H, 2 BB) in Adelphi’s 5-2 win over perennial powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas. It was a tremendous match up between a member of our 2016 All-Long Island team and Frankie Moscatiello (Rocky Point ’14), who hit 92-MPH with his first pitch of the game. Both pitchers have a chance to get drafted this year. “I was able to use all my pitches in various counts,” said the Panthers’ ace. “First game of the year is always a little more special,” he added. The offense got off to a slow start, but in...
