A lack of control and command on the mound cost the Maine Black Bears in their game against Stony Brook on Sunday. Ten of the Seawolves’ runs in their 12-6 win came in the first two frames. From then on, the Seawolves may have been outplayed, but those two frames were the catalyst to their victory. The Seawolves scored ten runs in the first two innings while walking 11 times. Most of the runs in the game were recorded due to bases loaded walks. Only one player in the Stony Brook lineup had more than one hit. Sean Buckhout had two hits to go along with three RBI and a run scored and two walks. He was a major factor in their victory. Toby Handley also had three RBIs to go along with a hit and a pair of runs scored. Casey Baker, Dylan Resk, Nick Grande, Jeremy Giles and Dan McEvoy all h...
St. Thomas Aquinas College won both games of their doubleheader 8-7 to complete a four-game sweep of Molloy. It was a tough break for the Lions who had celebrated their Senior Day just before the first game. Game one saw four lead changes between the two teams, starting with a first inning sacrifice fly from STAC’s Anthony Shkrelja. Molloy answered with two of their own in the second inning, one coming on a double by Anthony Galanoudis, and another on an Austin Nieves ground out. STAC came back with a huge four run fifth inning, where runs scored on doubles by Shkrelja and Bobby Morse, a single from Greg Dawber and an error by Molloy. They led 5-2, but it would not last long. Molloy responded with a monster inning of their own, scoring five runs to take a 7-5 lead. After an eight-pit...
Playing at Eisenhower Park on a beautiful spring day, Kellenberg won a crucial game against Chaminade 9-1. Thanks to a huge offensive fifth inning, a dominant start from lefty Chris Cappas and some exquisite defense the Firebirds took two of the three games in this series. Cappas started strong, striking out the opposing side in order to start the first. He then helped his own cause with an RBI single to left that put his side on the board in the bottom of the first. Lian Dvorak was on the mound for Chaminade, and after that first run he began to settle down. It was a classic pitchers duel until Kellenberg erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jack Delany started the scoring that inning with a single to right that brought in Andrew Russell. That signaled the end for Dvorak, bu...
Move over Nolan Ryan, you have someone on your heels. Shoreham-Wading River RHP Brian Morrell struck out 15 in his fifth career no-hitter on the way to a 7-0 victory over rival Bayport-Blue Point. The Notre-Dame commit struck out the final batter with a wicked curve ball to send his dugout into a frenzy. He hit 95 MPH with his fastball on two occasions. Morrell does it again! His fifth no-hitter is a 15 strikeout performance against Bayport-Blue Point pic.twitter.com/1tRBkfUJcy — aXcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) April 27, 2017 He allowed only three base runners–all on walks–but was electric for the duration of the game. He did so in front of a hand of MLB local scouts and regional cross checkers. He has a chance to get drafted in the top 5 rounds in the Jun...
Despite rain showers popping in and out all day St. Joseph’s and SUNY Old Westbury squared off in Patchogue for a Skyline conference doubleheader. A controversial home run call in the sixth helped propel St. Joe’s to a 4-3 win in game one, and in game two they exploded for a 12-0 win. St. Joe’s moves to 12-2 in the conference while Westbury falls to 6-8. Game one was scoreless for the first five innings as Nick Clemente was fantastic for St. Joe’s, and Trey Pizzutello was great for Westbury despite getting tagged with the loss. Shortstop Tommy Ziegen got the scoring started with an RBI double in the sixth, and Paul Rapoli followed him up with a two-run single later in the inning. The bottom half that inning is where things got interesting. Left fielder Lou Doria pul...
The morning rains subsided, allowing Lindenhurst to welcome Bay Shore for the rubber match of their three game series. Bay Shore led for most of the game, but Lindenhurst fought back several times, even taking the lead in the fifth. However, a sixth inning double by Damien Fanduiz tied the game, and a bases-loaded walk in the seventh put Bay Shore up 8-7 for the win. Bay Shore jumped all over Lindenhurst in the first, Mike LiVorio drove in the game’s first run on a double. Then Fanduiz drove in his first of two RBIs, scoring LiVorio on a single in the next at bat, before scoring himself on Matt Bross single. A sacrifice fly by LiVorio added a fourth run in the bottom of the second. Lindenhurst got on the board for themselves in the second. The pitcher Krishnam Patel hit a hard ground...
Bases loaded, two-out, 3-2 count, one-run lead against the reigning New York State Class A Champs from Wantagh. Gianni Sozio was on for the save and was facing Charlie Interrante–one of last year’s playoff heroes. After just missing with a 2-2 breaking ball he induced a ground out to SS to end the game to slam the door on the 2-1 victory for Bethpage. Final: Bethpage 2, Wantagh 1 pic.twitter.com/CkOHhfloh8 — aXcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) April 19, 2017 “I was really nervous to be honest with you,” said Sozio directly following the game. “Legs were shaking–but the only thing on my mind was the win. They’re a great team with great hitters–and of course I had to face the top of the lineup which is never easy to go through. They hav...
Going against one of the top pitchers on the island like Chris Stefl (St. John’s-commit) is a daunting task for any team. But for a quality hitting team like Lynbrook, the secret sauce was simply in their approach, according to Head Coach Al Marrazzo. “We always talk about if we could get into good counts–which is what we spoke about this week–we could be successful, and that’s what we were. I think you saw that with the top of our lineup, they were a little bit patient–they got fastballs in fastball counts and they were patient on curveballs and change ups. He settled in towards the middle of the game, and he really had his curve and change up working really well, but I think we had him early when he left the fastballs up at times. I think we had a real...
Having been around a winning culture, Brandon Isolano learned a thing or two about winning from competing for a New York State Class AA championship last season. It paid off in the eighth inning today, when he lined the go-ahead RBI single to right field to score Frank Genise and give West Islip a crucial 4-3 series win over Bellport. “They just showed us how to play as a team, just play hard and practice hard,” said the senior. The victory gave Mike LaDonna his first varsity win in an exhilarating back-and-forth affair that featured plenty of drama. West Islip got off to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning off Sacred Heart-commit Joe Greco when Kyle O’Neill (Felician-commit) ripped an opposite field double and scored on Greg Tsouprakos‘ (Pace-commit) RBI sin...
The Plainview Hawks came out on top Saturday afternoon at Joe Corea Field, defeating the Calhoun Colts 6-5 in a tight ballgame. It’s safe to say Plainview is the real deal. This win improves the Hawks record to 6-0 on the year, sweeping their second consecutive opponent. “We’re really deep this year, our pitching is going to carry us and the sky is the limit for this team,” stated starting pitcher Justin Kim. Kim was the winning pitcher in this ballgame, going 5 solid innings, striking out 7 and allowing 3 runs. Although this win was a great team win from the Hawks, the story of this game was Mark Faello. Faello who is the star player for this undefeated Hawks team contributed offensively, defensively and on the mound. At the plate, Faello launched a moonshot over t...
Coming off of a brutal walk-off loss to Nassau County Community College yesterday Suffolk CCC came back strong with two wins in shortened games today. A seven-run bottom of the ninth propelled Nassau to the win yesterday, but when the two teams squared off in Selden, Suffolk came out on top 4-1 and 8-0. In game one Suffolk collected seven hits, scoring their first run on a bases-loaded double play in the first inning. Nassau came back with a run of their own in the third off of a double by shortstop Elijah Tavarez, but that’s all their bats could conjure on the day. Starter Joseph Mattero earned the win pitching a complete game four-hitter. Apart from that third inning double by Tavarez he was able completely shut down Nassau’s bats. The game wasn’t tied at one for long a...
Thus far, 2017 has been quite a year for no-hitters. There was almost another member of the group yesterday, but due to the newly implemented pitch-count rule, that opportunity was thwarted from Farmingdale RHP Angus McCloskey. Farmingdale defeated Syosset by the score of 8-2. McCloskey had his ‘A’ game and struck out 13 through the first 6.2 IP, while holding the opposition hitless. McCloskey stated that he was aware of it prior. “I knew that last batter I faced was my last,” said McCloskey. I struck out the first two in the inning and had the last hitter 0-2 and ended up walking him because the umpire squeezed me a bit, but if the pitch count wasn’t an issue, they weren’t touching my fastball. And had all the confidence in the world that third out was ...
