Suffolk Powers Past Nassau, 10-4, in Annual Blue Chip Prospect Grand Slam Challenge

The annual seniors-only classic began with an early lead for Suffolk, who hosted the event. St. Joseph’s stands could hardly hold the mostly-Suffolk crowd that supported their run manufacturing team, who scored in all but two innings. Rocky Point Head Coach Andrew Aschettino was part of a coaching staff that included two other notable Class A head coaches in Bayport’s Jim Moccio and Mount Sinai’s Eric Reichenbach. “This was a team of studs, this was fun. I told them before the game that they are here for a reason, and go out there and do what you do,” Aschettino said. Kenneth Gordon set the tone for Suffolk working a four-pitch walk to lead off the game. After a couple of fielder’s choices, Brian Morrell busted a line drive single up the middle to drive in Peter Theodorellis from sec...

DeMicco’s Two-Run Shot Gives Long Island Baseball 5-2 Win over Body Armor Titans

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5yVp_42nMk Nick DeMicco (Plainedge ’18) picked up right where he left off during the high school season with a long 2-R HR that hooked around the left field foul pole at Joe Nathan Field in the fourth inning to propel Long Island Baseball Prime to a 5-2 victory over the Body Armor Titans. Scoreless first inning for Tyler Marinaccio pic.twitter.com/NFEWEjaZmC — aXcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) June 8, 2017 The BA Titans were without Anthony Fontana and Anthony D’Onofrio (Wantagh ’18) due to the upcoming New York State Class A tournament this weekend as well as a handful of players due to injury which effected their lineup but they sent Plainview JFK junior Tyler Marinaccio to the hill. He fired a scoreless first inning with two s...

Wantagh Gets to Morrell Early, Repeats As Long Island Champions

THE WANTAGH WARRIORS ARE BACK TO BACK CLASS A LONG ISLAND CHAMPIONS! FINAL: Wantagh 4 Shoreham-Wading River 2 pic.twitter.com/JFdQ2tqOgN — aXcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) June 3, 2017 Much like they have for the past two seasons. Wantagh‘s star players shined when it mattered most. This time it was in the Long Island Championship, defeating the 24-1 Shoreham-Wading River WIldcats 4-2. From the first pitch of this championship contest, the atmosphere could’ve been mistaken for a Wantagh home game. The first pitch of this game was driven for a lead off double over the left fielder’s head courtesy of Anthony D’Onofrio. This was just the beginning. When the first inning was all said and done, Morrell was forced to throw 32 pitches an...

Previewing Saturday’s Mega Match Up Between SWR and Wantagh

Well, this is what the people wanted. The locomotive versus the immovable object. The reigning New York State Class A champion Wantagh Warriors (21-5) against Shoreham-Wading River (24-1). The reigning New York Class A Player of the Year (Jimmy Joyce) against the reigning Carl Yastrzemski Award winner (Brian Morrell). Two Div-I pitchers in the midst of great seasons going head-to-head in a winner-take-all. How do they stack up? The way I measure how potent a high school offense is, is by how many Div-I players they have. Wantagh has Joyce, Anthony D’Onofrio, Trevor Fagan and Anthony Fontana. They have several other key pieces such as John Conroy, Charlie Interrante, Pat Willix and Jake Castellano–who had a big game in the County Championship. D’Onofrio might be the best p...

Southold Takes Home Long Island Class C Championship

Southhold wins! They take the Class C Long Island Championship final pic.twitter.com/Oy03M9EOAY — aXcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) June 2, 2017 by Matt Torpe The Southold Settlers are Class C Long Island champions after a 13-5 victory over the East Rockaway Rocks. “Pretty special team–our pitching’s been there, our bats have been there. We were lucky to get those runs early. Still got to clean up a few things, we didn’t play a perfect game we hit well enough and pitching was good enough to keep us there, but it feels good we worked hard. It was a great season,” said Head Coach Mike Carver on the team’s victory. He went on to talk about what it meant for to get this victory, “Lets see that’s our first Long Island Championship since 2002. We we...

Commack Wins First County Championship Since 1997

Commack does it!! They are the 2017 Suffolk Class AA Champions ! Commack 8, West Islip 6 WP: Jake Krzemienski pic.twitter.com/00g1i7pt9V — aXcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) May 31, 2017 One week before the season, the Commack baseball team didn’t know who their Head Coach would be. This was a team coming off a 14-win season and a playoff run with arguably the best staff on Long Island. Three months later they are celebrating their first Suffolk County Class AA championship since 1997 after their 8-6 back-and-forth victory over the reigning Long Island Champion West Islip Lions. Senior Pete Theodorellis, who tied the game up at 6-6 in the sixth inning with a double off the fence–and fired 8.2 IP yesterday–never wavered in his optimism with this team. Even during that ...

Commack Pulls Off Comeback Walk-Off In Extra Inning Thriller To Take Game One, 2-1.

First year Commack head coach Bryan Bonin was fired up with his team taking game one of the Suffolk County Class AA finals from West Islip. The first of a three game set was a classic pitcher’s duel in every sense of the term between WI senior Joe Valentino and Commack’s senior ace, Peter Theodorellis. West Islip scored one in the top half and Commack responded with two of their own to win it. “That was just a tough win, we teach the guys all season long to just stick together and good things will happen; do what we practice, and it worked out for us today, we got one more to win.” said Bonin. The intensity of this extra-inning game was felt throughout, as St. John The Baptist has one big section of bleachers forcing opposing fans to sit together. Theodorellis and Valentino both had ...

Wantagh Overcomes Early Deficit To Repeat As Class A County Champions

THE WANTAGH WARRIORS ARE YOUR BACK TO BACK CLASS A CHAMPIONS!!!!! FINAL: Wantagh 4 Garden City 2 pic.twitter.com/zX5QpNE4Uh — aXcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) May 30, 2017 Despite the struggles, despite the losses, despite the deficits, Wantagh overcame every single obstacle in their path and are now back-to-back county champions. Although winning may seem like a normal day at the office for the Wantagh Warriors, this wasn’t just any other victory. This was a victory with a great amount of emotion that solidified their team’s legacy. On the mound for game 3 of the county championship, southpaw Brendan Haas got the start in the most significant game of his young career. He struggled early with his command, allowing 2 earned runs in the 1s...

Jason Diaz Pitches Kellenberg to Back-To-Back CHSAA Championships

Final: Kellenberg 1, St. John the Baptist 0 WP: Jason Diaz (4-Hit Shutout, 10 K) Kellenberg wins CHSAA Championship for consecutive year pic.twitter.com/SVUCaB11Be — aXcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) May 29, 2017 It was the year of the strikeout for the Kellenberg Firebirds. Their rotation of Chris Cappas, Jason Diaz and Andrew Williams combined for a sub 1.00 ERA. Fittingly, it ended with a strikeout and a dog pile on the mound. Today it was the youngest of the trio–sophomore and University of Miami-commit Jason Diaz that stepped up and fired a four-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory over St. John the Baptist to deliver the Firebirds to a consecutive CHSAA Championship. He struck out 10 and walked two, looking mature beyond his years. The only offense needed was senior and CHSAA Play...

Massapequa and Garden City Both Force Game 3’s

The Massapequa Chiefs and Garden City Trojans both faced elimination this afternoon–both won in blowout fashion to force a winner-take-all Game 3 on Tuesday. The Chiefs defeated the Plainview Hawks in game one of the double header at SUNY Old Westbury by a score of 10-1. For the second consecutive year, Massapequa is headed to game 3 of the county championship. Last year, the Chiefs fell to the East Meadow Jets in the do-or-die game 3. This year they’re hoping to be on the other end of the spectrum. “Last year was very upsetting, we thought we should’ve won the county championship but we ended up losing to a very good East Meadow team, but this year we’re even more determined. After the win we’re in the same spot as last year but now we’re very con...

Fontana Puts Wantagh On Verge of Nassau Class A Title Again

In a tight ballgame, in front of a huge crowd, the Wantagh Warriors defeated the Garden City Trojans 3-2 to win Game 1 of the Nassau Class A County Championship. The best part about the victory? They are now one win away from being back to back county champions. Every fan in attendance was charged $6 at the entrance to attend the Anthony Fontana show on Saturday afternoon. Despite allowing 2 runs in the 3rd inning, Fontana earned the complete game victory. “I struggled with my command in the beginning a little bit. I had to focus on keeping the ball down which I started doing later in the game and I think that’s what helped us earn the win today,” said Fontana. Not to mention, Fontana also drove in two out of the three Wantagh runs on an RBI Double to left center, raising his RBI total to ...

Shoreham-Wading River Takes Suffolk Class A Title For First Time Since 2012

by Julian Guevara For the first time since 2012, Shoreham-Wading River is Suffolk County Class A champs. Led by their ace and MLB draft hopeful Brian Morrell, they took down Bayport-Blue Point 8-1 for their 20th consecutive win. Morrell was a force to be reckoned with on the hill (complete game allowing one earned run, a couple of hits, four walks and 11 K’s) and at the plate where he set the down with a second inning grand slam, for his eighth HR of the season. “This is what we have all been looking forward to–all the way back in January at winter workouts, I told the guys that this is the goal for the season,” said SWR head coach Kevin Willi. “We took it game-by-game in the playoffs and really put ourselves in good position to win.” SWR was on base often and early, which has been p...
