Final: Titans 4, CT Bombers 3 pic.twitter.com/QmwZvDPBKR — Axcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) September 18, 2017 Jake Pierre stepped up with the bases loaded, having already compiled four hits on the evening; but he was not content. “I just wanted to win the game for my teammates, trying to go 5-for-5 and do something special for once.” The Sachem North junior certainly did that, as he blooped a single over the third baseman’s head to send the winning run home and propel the LI Titans to a 4-3 win over the Connecticut Bombers to take first place in the 18U Northeast Elite tournament at Baseball Heaven. The sweet-swinging lefty had put the Titans up 1-0 in the first inning on an RBI double to score Phil K...

Team Fontana Takes Inaugural Home Run Derby 35-31

We couldn’t have asked for better weather or a better match up for our inaugural Home Run Derby today at NYIT. In what looked like it would be a blowout, Team McHugh made a furious comeback from a 26-10 deficit to come up just short, by the score of 35-31. Below are some of the highlights from the contest…. Anthony Fontana led off the bottom of the first with a huge round. He hit three home runs and compiled 14 points overall. His sweet swing produced several long blasts pasts the cone in deep right field. The Furman-commit got his team out to a quick 14-0 lead. Both teams exchanged two points in the second inning from James Myler and Jarred Vanderhoof. In the top of the third, the captain Tim McHugh put up four on the board. His power bat generated several massive flies out to...

Recapping the Top Players in ECR Showcase

Today we covered the Elite College Recruiting (ECR) Showcase at Baseball Heaven. There was a bevy of high-end players being analyzed and observed by coaches representing some of the best baseball programs in the country. Through out the afternoon, I took notes and videos on some of the players that stood out to me. Below you will find notes about the best of the bunch. Matt Brown-Eiring (RHP, Connetquot 2020) Matt Brown (Connetquot 2020) throwing 82-83 MPH, 71 MPH slider and 73 MPH change up. The first thing you notice is the compact, clean mechanics from the classic high 3/4 arm slot. He is not the tallest...

Elite Takes Brookhaven Varsity Championship In 10 Inning Thriller Winning 4-3

Elite came out on top in a closely contested back-and-forth battle with help from a few of their every day players. The strong team would come together and pull off a clutch victory in the tenth inning after being tied at, 3-3, with the Smithtown Bulls for three and a half innings. The game was won in the tenth on a long fly ball that just short hopped the left field fence off the bat of Thatcher Cord (Westhampton Beach ’18). Cord would come up with two men on and one out in what would have been relief pitcher Mike Hennessy’s last batter anyway due to pitch count. “It felt great,” said Cord. “The inning before we actually had a man on third that we couldn’t get in, so coach pulled me aside and told me to make contact on the first fastball I saw and I just ripp...

Team Steel Gray Defeats LI Patriots White 7-2 to Win JV Title

The Medford Complex in Brookhaven, NY was the venue of champions on Thursday night. While the Varsity Championship was in full swing, Team Steel Gray hosted the LI Patriots White for the JV Championship. Chris Feigel began the game on the mound for Team Steel Gray and Liam Adipietro started for the LI Patriots White. Both were solid early with a scoreless first inning. Then, disaster struck for Adipietro in the bottom of the second. The strike zone seemed to disappear from sight, as Adipietro issued five walks in the inning that scored three before exiting after an inning and two-thirds. Angelo Veltri came in with the bases loaded and two away and retired Jason Schwarm to put the inning to bed, but it was Team Steel Gray ahead 3-0 after two. That remained the score heading into the home fo...

The Devils were kept in the game behind a strong performance from their right-handed starter, Sean Griffin (Port Jefferson ’17). “My strikes were good, I was hitting the zone, it felt great,” said Griffin. The game would be knotted at zero going into the bottom of the sixth. That’s when NSBA came together to cause some discomfort for Pat-...

Recap of Week 5 of the New York Baseball Academy at Hofstra

The New York Baseball Academy has been home to some of the top young talent in the northeast over the past 40 years. That–combined with a coaching staff that features former professional players and some of the most recognizable and respected baseball minds–has allowed the NYBA to be named one of the top five baseball camps in the country. In addition to learning a great deal, many of the players had awards bestowed upon them. More important than the skill-based awards were those who were honored for their ability to actively listen and incorporate that into the games. These individuals also gave their 100 percent effort all week and never failed to hustle. Below are the winners of the “Super Hustler” Award. Also pictured is 15-year-old Matt Pelcher who was the recipient of the fourth Mr.A...

Smithtown was led by their pitcher and catcher duo in this strong showing of timely hitting and high-quality pitching. The pitcher, Ryan Mayr (Smithtown West ’18), would go the distance allowing just two hits over seven innings. After allowing a run off a hit in the bottom half of the first, Mayr dug deep and worked into a groove not allowing any hits until the seventh inn...

Team Steel Prime Takes Down Smithtown Bulls Elite, 7-2, in 13u American Championship

Bases-clearing double gives Team Steel a 4-1 lead pic.twitter.com/w4IenOUIjE — aXcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) August 10, 2017 After falling behind 1-0 in the bottom of the second the No. 2 seeded Team Steel Prime came right back with a five-run top of the third. The five-run third would be the difference in the ballgame. The biggest blow came by the tallest person on the field. St. Dominic’s class of 2021, Safwan Shariff, would step into the box and clear the bases, propelling Steel Prime to a 4-1 lead with two outs in the third. The 6’3 13-year-old smoked a fly ball over the left fielder’s head that allowed him to trot into second with an easy stand up double. “It felt great leading my team to victory,” said Shariff. “It was a big win.” He would...

LI Jr. Ducks Orange Sweep DH over South Shore Slammers

The LI Jr. Ducks would clinch a playoff spot with their two wins over the Slammers by decisive scores of, 5-1, and, 9-5. The first game of the DH went slightly long causing the second game to be shortened by two innings due to PAL Stadium’s lack of lights. Five innings is all the Jr. Ducks offense needed, though, to bring nine runs across. Their main contributor was their three hitter, Alex Russo. The incoming junior at Chaminade would have an impressive day at the plate with his biggest hit coming in the fifth inning when he would step into the left hand side of the box with bases loaded and no outs. The tall power hitter would drive a long and high fly ball over the right fielder’s head clearing the bases. “I really just kept my normal swing, I wasn’t thinking about hitting it over anyon...
