The Firebird’s relentless offense stopped the game in the bottom of the sixth with the mercy rule in effect. Down 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Berthel sent a towering fly ball over the left-center field fence to give his Vikings a 5-3 lead, a lead they would never relinquish en route to a home victory. The Calhoun bats made the difference in this one but the early game had solid pitching by both sides. Josh Cohen was on the mound for Garden City and his first inning went as any pitcher would dream.
