The CW Post season has gotten off to a nice 2-1 start in Lantana, Fla. They annihilated Post University 21-3 on Friday night, narrowly edged Assumption 7-6, before losing 3-1 against Wilmington University. They scored an unbelievable 17 runs in the fifth inning. Even if you subtract that inning, however, they still win the game. Rick Alessi drove in five runs, scored four and recorded three hits. Casey McKay and Joey Arena also drove in four runs. Mike Eckerle recorded the win. In their 7-6 victory they gradually erased a 6-2 deficit. The go-ahead hit came on a two-run single in the ninth inning by Kyle Fagan. Starter Chris Anderson went 4.1 innings, allowing five earned but avoided the loss with the comeback. Relief pitcher Brian Tinney went 4.2 innings scoreless and recorded the victory....
Photo Credit: Dowling Athletics The Golden Lions of Dowling are off to a nice 7-4 start to their season. They split the weekend against a difficult opponent in Franklin Pierce. They won the first two games on Saturday. They won 1-0 in a seven inning game. Tom Bamman fired the shutout, allowing six hits and striking out four. The lone run came across on a double by Ian Schneider in the fifth inning. They also won 2-1 in the night cap. Tyler Badamo came within one out of completing the complete game. He fired 8.2 innings, without allowing an earned run. RJ Going drove in a run with an RBI double and Rob Veltre drove in a run with a ground out. The Golden Lions lost the next two games, but will return to action tomorrow against New Haven.
Adelphi was not the only Long Island team to suffer in Florida this weekend. The Molloy Lions, an old ECC foe, also dropped three this weekend to Wilmington, Lynn and Southern Connecticut. The loss to Wilmington was a 10-4 final. Senior Max Schonfeld suffered an uncharacteristic rough day, allowing 10 runs (three earned) on 10 hits in four innings. He was sabotaged by three errors by his defense. The Lions batted around in the ninth innings and scored all four of their runs, but it was too little, too late. They were shutout 4-0 by Lynn. Starter Alex Brosnan tossed five solid innings, allowing two earned runs, but the offense could not get anything going against Connelly, who fired the complete game shutout, scattering seven hits. They were also shutout 2-0 in the third game, despite out-h...
Hoping to get away from the dreary northeast weather, the Adelphi baseball team traveled to beautiful Boca Raton, FLA for their annual trip. Ironically, the first game was cancelled due to inclement weather. They have dropped their first three games in sunny Florida to Dominican on Friday and a pair to No. 19 ranked Wilmington on Saturday and Sunday. On Friday the Panthers were in position to win the game, thanks to an eighth inning RBI single by Robert Vani to push the score to 4-3. In the ninth, however, senior closer Matt Abramowitz allowed two runs to come across. He was relieved by Nick Batas but the damage was done, Dominican stole the victory 5-4. On Saturday, the Panthers were hanging tight down 2-1 in the third inning until Wilmington broke it open. Sophomore starter John Mulford ...

The Hofstra Pride spent the weekend in San Antonio against the University of the Incarnate Word. They split the series, and now have a record of 5-6. In their 9-3 win on Friday, Brian MacDonald had the big blow, a third inning grand slam to break the game open. Nick Kozlowski fired six innings, allowing two earned runs for the win. They won the next game 4-2. In the 12th inning, senior Matt Ford broke the tie with a two-run home run off Matt Decker. David Jesch started for the Pride and fired seven terrific innings, but did not factor in the decision. Brett Schreiber came on and closed the door with five innings to record the win.
Photo credit: Stony Brook Athletics Desperately looking to avoid last year’s dismal start, the Stony Brook Sea Wolves were able to right the ship with a weekend sweep of Fordham. They are now a modest 3-6, but trending upward with plenty of season ahead of them. Game One was a 6-0 shutout tossed by ace Frankie Vanderka. The senior fired a three-hitter, fanning 11 while walking only one batter. On offense, Kevin Courtney led the way with three hits and two RBI. Kevin Krause also drove in two runs. The middle game was even more dominating, a 10-0 victory. Strangely enough, the Sea Wolves were scoreless in all but one of those innings. They exploded for 10 runs in the fourth inning, thanks to nine straight batters reaching base. The big blow came on a grand slam by Kevin Krause to break...
The Hofstra Pride improved to 3-4 on the season after defeating Penn State two of three this weekend in North Carolina. In Game One, Nick Kozlowski and Brett Schreiber combined on a shutout. Kozlowski started and tossed the first 5.1 with three strikeouts and Schreiber finished and compiled six strikeouts. Kenny Jackson led the offense with two home runs, while driving in four runs. The Pride won the next game 5-2. David Jesch won his second game of the season, with seven strong innings. Nobody compiled a multi-hit or multi-RBI game, but a three-run first inning was the difference. Brian MacDonald, Kenny Jackson, Matt Ford and John Taurinsky accounted for the RBIs. The Nittany Lions salvaged the final game with a 10-4 loss. It took the Pride eight pitchers to escape the game, with starter ...
It was another win-less weekend for the Sea Wolves. They were defeated in North Carolina by Wake Forest, St. Peters and Saint Louis. The latter two losses came in extra-inning heart breakers. In the second game, they wasted a dominating seven inning, 10-k performance from Brandon McNitt by blowing a ninth inning lead. In the third game, they wasted a three-hit, two RBI performance from Cole Peragine while dropping a disappointing 9-8 game in 12 innings. It was a strange game, they were down 5-0 and roared back to gain the lead after a seven-run fifth inning but relinquished the lead in the ensuing frame. The team did start 2013 by dropping the first eight games of the season and they are now in danger of repeating that. They will take on Fordham on Saturday with the hopes of getting the fi...
After numerous cancellations, Adelphi finally had the opportunity to play their first game of 2014. It was worth the wait, having beat Virginia Wesleyen 2-1 in a pitcher-dominated game. Neither of the runs were credited with RBIs–an error, and bases-loaded double play, but it did not matter because the combination of Stephen Bove, John Mulford, Vinny Caputo, John Donnelly and TJ Santiago held down the opponent in sunny Virginia. The Panthers compiled only four hits in the contest. They will now face Hofstra on Tuesday in Uniondale.
Much like the team that Head Coach Dom Scala once played for, the catchers’ position has been the most stable position in the history of the Panthers. While it is unfair any college program to the likes of Bill Dickey, Yogi Berra, Thurman Munson and Jorge Posada, Adelphi has had Ryan Boelsen and Rich McCarren over the past decade.Next in line is Kevin Hutzel, who was named All-Conference in his junior year and will be counted on to be a leader and a force in the middle of the lineup for the Panthers. Here is a quick Q & A with the Massapequa native about a variety of baseball topics. How did you experience such a rapid improvement from sophomore to junior year? 1. A lot of my improvement derived from my approach at the plate. I was putting myself into bad counts and taking pitches...
Molloy finished their weekend in Myrtle Beach, S.C with a 2-2 record. They were victorious over Nyack and Caldwell after losing the first two against Merrimack and Stonehill. John Galanoudis finished the weekend 7-for-18 (.389) and Carlos Guzman was right behind with 6-for-16 (.375). Max Schonfeld provided the team with just what they needed, a huge performance to get the first win of the season. He went 7.1 innings, yielding on 1 earned run on six hits. Alex Brosnan followed suit with 7 strong innings the next game, allowing only two runs with six strikeouts. The Lions pounded out 14 hits, with five players compiling multi-hit performances in the 12-2 drubbing. All things considered, it was a great end to the weekend. The Lions were able to right the ship and will head to Garden City on ...
