Stony Brook lost a 1-0 pitcher’s duel yesterday at Cal State Northridge. The winning run came across the plate on a walk-off walk in the bottom of the ninth inning. Chad Lee suffered the loss for the Sea Wolves who drop to 6-9 on the season and 3-4 in one-run games. The Sea Wolves got a tremendous effort from starting pitcher Tim Knesnik and reliever Bryan Tatelman who combined for eight shutout innings and allowing four hits. The offense only mustered up three hits. They will come home and begin a four game home stand this weekend. NYIT lost 8-0 to NYIT as their season-long losing streak continues. St. Joseph’s Drop Two

St. Joseph’s trip to Florida has not been kind so far. They have lost their first four games, including two yesterday to Mass-Boston. In the first game, they lost 5-3. They had battled back from a 4-0 deficit to cut the lead to one but were unable to close the deal. Steven Szobesky took the loss, he drops to 0-2 on the young season. He allowed four runs in five innings of work. Brian Godoy recorded two hits for the Golden Eagles. In the second game, they lost 9-7. They squandered a 4-0 lead that they built in the top of the first inning. They fell 7-3 but cut it down to one in the fifth inning. Once again, they were not able to find the big hit. NYIT Falls to Penn State

The NYIT Bears drop to 0-12 after losing a close one, 7-3, to Penn State. They had battled back to cut the deficit to 4-3, but allowed three runs to come across in the bottom of the seventh. Michael Sinnott suffered the loss, as he tossed 4.2 innings, allowing four earned runs while walking six. The Bears did smash 10 hits in the game; including three each by Joe Daru and Josh Canabal. They will return to action today against Penn St. in search of their first victory.

Stony Brook Takes Down USC

Photo Credit: Stony Brook Athletics The Sea Wolves marched into Los Angeles and toppled USC by the score of 4-3. Tyler Honahan improved his record to 2-0 with 6.2 strong innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs. Cameron Stone closed it out with 2.1 spotless innings. Robert Chavarria recorded three hits and one RBI for Stony Brook and Kevin Courtney added two hits and one RBI as well. The Sea Wolves improved to 6-8 and have won six of eight. They will stay in California and play Cal State tonight.

Adelphi Tops CW Post

Photo Credit: Adelphi Athletics The Adelphi Panthers have woken up. They are back on track after defeating Nassau County foe CW Post yesterday by the score of 4-0. The Panthers outplayed them so thoroughly that the held the Pioneers to two hits while they committed four errors. Mike Ceparano recorded his first collegiate victory, and he was dominant. The lefty tossed six spotless innings, allowing only two hits, walking one and striking out six. He gave way to Mike Cranston to fired a scoreless seventh inning. Nick Batas, John Bivas and John Donnelly finished the shutout. Junior Nick Zito led the Panthers with three hits. Cliff Brantley added two hits and an RBI (and now batting .487). Farmingdale Concludes Florida Trip With Victory

Farmingdale used to struggle in their trips to Florida. That seems to be a thing of the past. They concluded a 3-2 trip with a 7-6 victory over Nichols yesterday, who drop to 0-5. It was a back-and-forth affair and the score stood at 6-6 in the fourth. Starting pitcher for the Rams, Kevin Martinez, got hit around a little bit in his 4.1 innings of work. Kevin Cashman came on and relieved him and put out the fire. The sophomore fired 4.2 shutout innings, and allowed the Rams to score the go-ahead run in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Skyline Player of the Week Ed Bergmann. PJ Harrington also added in two RBI. The Rams move to 8-3 on the season. They will now begin their Skyline Conference schedule this weekend against Maritime on Saturday.

Steve Marino Still Living the Dream

Photo Credit: Courier Press Among the biggest obstacle in becoming a big league baseball player–aside from talent obviously– is overcoming the idea of traveling on long bus rides and putting yourself through the mental rigors of a long minor league season without the benefit of major league pay. Once you can accept that the journey is not always a quick linear path, those who truly love the game have an opportunity to get signed and fulfill their boyhood dream. One player who fits that criteria is Steve Marino, currently a third baseman for the Evansville Otters of the Frontier League. Farmingdale Two Wins, Two Losses in Florida

Since starting their Florida trip with an impressive 2-1 victory over No. 10 ranked Marietta, Farmingdale St. has been inconsistent. They lost 13-8 to Baldwin Wallace, 11-5 to Mansfield prior to defeating New Paltz 7-5. In the last game, Mike Dolce won his second game of the season, although he wasn’t at his sharpest. He threw 6.2 innings, allowed 10 hits, two walks and five earned. Sophomore stud Alex Weingarten fired 2.1 scoreless innings for the save. New Paltz made four errors which accounted for four of the seven runs. The Rams are back in action today against Nichols, which will conclude the Florida trip.

St. Joseph’s Drops Both

St. Joseph’s trip to Fort Myers has gotten off to a rough start. They lost 9-6 to Fredonia St and 6-5 to Southern VT. In the 6-5 loss, they were unable to hold a 5-2 lead in the sixth inning. Dan Diblasi suffered the defeat, he tossed 5.1 innings and allowed six runs (four earned). Joe Lynn drove in two runs for the Golden Eagles. They will return to action tomorrow against Mass-Boston.

Old Westbury Gets a W on the Board

After eight failed attempts, the Old Westbury Panthers won their first game of the season. They had a busy weekend, and finished 3-3 to bring their record to 3-11. They beat Yeshiva both games by a combined score of 51-0. Yeshiva is not known for their ability to win baseball games and the Panthers used it as an opportunity to bulk up. Nick Yip record six RBI, Alex Abanavas and Byron White added four each in the 36-0 win. The Panthers were then swept by Bates College by the scores of 3-2, 14-9 and 7-2. They beat Baruch 7-1 to conclude their weekend. After falling behind 1-0 on an RBI groundout by Nick Pomo-Roman, they scored seven unanswered runs. They compiled 11 hits, and Byron White drove in two runs. Tim Ingram won his first game of the season. They will play NJ City on Thursday.

Dowling Splits in NC

Dowling lost in extra innings to Pace, beat Southern New Hampshire and had two games cancelled. In the extra-inning loss, Dowling didn’t help themselves by making three errors, the final one cost them the game against Pace. Tyler Badamo threw seven shutout innings but did not factor in the decision. The loss went to Robert Rose. Jon Cruz went 4-for-5 with a run scored in the loss. In their 4-2 victory, Tom Bamman fired the complete game for the win. He allowed seven hits and struck out eight. Jon Cruz, Rob Veltre and JC Brandmeier had multi-hits. The latter drove in two runs as well. They will be be in action Friday against Molloy.

Molloy Splits the Weekend

Molloy won one, lost one and had another game cancelled in North Carolina this weekend. They topped Merrimack College 3-2, before losing 6-1 to Southern New Hampshire. In the win, Molloy overcame a 1-0 deficit with a three-run eighth inning, highlighted by Kyle Van Duyne’s RBI single. In the ninth, Matt Castaneda allowed a run to cut the lead to 3-2 but closed the door for the save. Max Schonfeld’s solid seven inning start was not rewarded with a victory, that went to reliever Anthony Eichhorn. In the loss, Alex Brosnan allowed six runs in 5.1 innings. Kevin Podell drove in the lone run for the Lions. They will return to action tomorrow against New Haven.
