Photo Credit: St. Joseph’s Athletics NYIT decided the turn their season around a tad too late. After halting their 19-game losing streak, they have now won two in a row to improve to 3-33. They defeated Iona 6-5. The winning run scored in the bottom of the eighth on a throwing error by the shortstop. Stony Brook lost their first home game of the season after 15 consecutive wins. They were edged 4-1 by Central Connecticut. They are now 22-14 on the season. I was at the game, but it was not the type of game to evaluate a team on. They did not get anything going offensively–they only had eight hits–and no player had multiple. The opposing pitcher, Nick Boyd, was very stocky but stifled them for six innings. He had some good velocity on his pitches, but I didn’t think it was anything that the Sea Wolves couldn’t handle. Their lone run came in the fourth inning on a HBP, and they stranded bases loaded after that. The starting pitcher for Stony Brook, Josh Barry, lasted two innings. He allowed four hits and two walks, and hurt himself by throwing away a potential doub...

He came in relief of Jake DeCarli who went the first seven innings and allowed three runs. The teams combined for only 12 hits; the pitchers kept them uncomfortable all day. Tolan and Brunetti for the only players with multi-hit games. The runs charged to Badamo were unea...

Pitchers are throwing too frequently, not too many pitches. You’ll hear it from former Major League pitchers all the time. “Pitch counts are ruining the game! In my day we threw ’till our arms fell off..then we threw some more!” It’s no secret that pitchers are getting injured at a higher frequency than ever before. In Tom Verducci’s latest article on Sports Illustrated, he stated that five of the 16 high school pitchers that were selected in the first round of the drafts from 2010-2012 have already undergone Tommy John surgery. It’s remarkable that these pitchers are coddled as soon as they sign their contract, yet they are still getting injured. Verducci’s theory is that pitchers are overtaxed before they even graduate high school, which ma...
Photo Credit: Adelphi Athletics Sometimes it’s best to make a change in your life. It’s possible something was holding you back from reaching your potential. In the case of Cliff Brantley, he just needed a change of scenery. “Things were not working out for me at my previous school, baseball wise,” said the junior who played at Wagner College in Staten Island. “I was in a position where I needed somewhere to play and I remembered receiving a letter from Coach Dom Scala my junior year in high school. I took the chance in telling him I was interested in playing. I visited the school and came down with my parents. I am extremely grateful to Adelphi and Coach for giving me the opportunity to play.” Through 29 games, it has been a tremendous decision. In a ma...
Photo Credit: Farmingdale Athletics It doesn’t matter what their records are, the two teams will always find it in them to play two intense and entertaining games. The Farmingdale Rams and Old Westbury Panthers have met in the Skyline Conference finals in the past four seasons with the Rams winning all of them. Still, the Panthers give the Rams a hard-fought battle each time and that continued this weekend as the team’s split a double header. I was in attendance the first game and here are some of my observations of the two teams… After a rough first inning in which he allowed three hits and two runs (one earned), Alex Weingarten was dynamic. He possesses a great deal of toughness and composure on the mound. He attacked the zone and had command of his breaking ball. He ga...
Photo Credit: Farmingdale Athletics The Farmingdale Rams won three of four games this weekend. They swept NYU-Poly and split with Old Westbury. The first game against NYU-Poly was bizarre. Despite winning 19-6, they allowed 16 hits and needed five pitchers. Mike Dolce started and struggled through 1.2 innings. He was relieved by Kevin Martinez who fired three strong innings. Timmy Trimarchi went 2.1 shutout innings, allowing five hits. The Rams put up 17 hits and benefitted from eight errors. Ed Bergmann scored four runs and drove in one. They won the next game 19-8. They briefly got a scare by allowing a six-run fifth inning...
