Molloy Season Ends at the Hands of St. Thomas Aquinas

Photo Credit: Molloy Athletics Molloy entered the ECC playoff as the No. 3 seed, and after a surprising opening round win, they ultimately had their season cut short after two losses to familiar foes. On Thursday, Max Schonfeld threw a complete game against St. Thomas Aquinas to lead Molloy to a 6-1 to move on the winner’s bracket. They proceeded to get crushed 12-3 by Dowling. Starter Alex Miden had a rough go of it; allowing five ER in 1.2 innings. Anthony Eichhorn relieved him and allowed four ER in 2.1 innings. At that point, it was already 9-2 in favor of Dowling. The offense was stagnant, compiling only five hits. Kyle Van Duyne was responsible for two of the runs on a home run in the second inning. Miden fell to 5-3 on the season, and the Lions finished their season with a rec...

Adelphi Nearly Completes Improbable Run

Photo Credit: Adelphi Athletics Despite entering the Northeast-10 tournament has a huge underdog, the Adelphi Panthers nearly shocked the league with an impressive postseason run that included three wins over higher ranked opponents. That run came to an end on Sunday with a 2-0 loss to No. 1 ranked Southern New Hampshire. The Panthers received a great start from sophomore ace John Mulford, who was pitching on three-days rest. Mulford went six innings, allowing two ER on five hits, two walks and four strikeouts. He finished the season with a 5-3 record with a 2.93 ERA. The offense could not mount much of anything. They compiled five hits and struck out nine times. Cole Warren had them off balance and unable to string a rally together. Their best shot was in the ninth inning, when Nick Zito ...

Dowling Wins At-Large Bid

Photo Credit: Dowling Athletics Although they did not receive an automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA regionals, Dowling was awarded with the No. 5 seed in the East region. The Golden Lions (33-15) will face Franklin Pierce (35-16) in the first-round of the tournament, which will be held at Southern New Hampshire campus. The two teams split their season series, two games a piece. Franklin Pierce outscored them by a total of five runs in four games. Needless to say, the teams are fairly evenly matched. Dowling does have a pitching staff that can compete with anyone in the country, and their No. 5 seed has no impact at this level of the season. The game will be played on Thursday, and the tournament will run through Sunday.

Dowling Falls Flat at the Inopportune Time

Photo Credit: Dowling Athletics It almost seemed too easy. The Dowling Golden Lions breezed through the regular season with a 31-13 record, beating every team that was a threat to them entering the season. They made it look even easier in the first two games of the ECC tournament, beating Bridgeport and Molloy by a combined score of 26-3. They even had a 20-6 home record to fall back on. Somewhere along the line, it all changed. They were crushed 12-4 against St. Thomas Aquinas in a potential clinching game. While it was not the end of the line, they did not respond well in the winner-take-all deciding game.  Kyle DeMeo took the mound, and was very effective. The Golden Lions took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on an error by the third baseman. St. Thomas Aquinas responded with two-run...

-Yesterday the Dowling Golden Lions and Molloy Lions both won their first-round matchup in the ECC tournament. They will meet today at noon, with the pitching matchup expected to be Tom Bammann and Shea Spitzbarth. It should present a challenge for both offenses. Dowling’s No. 2 pitcher compiled an impressive 9-1 record with a 2.26 ERA. He threw three complete games and accrued 71 innings while striking out 62 and walking only 10. Spitzbarth has a 3-2 record in nine starts with a 2.23 ERA and 72 strikeouts against 29 walks in 60 innings. He held the opposition to a .194 average. Bammann will have an easier time navigating through a lineup that hit .260 this season, although it has been hot lately. Ron Bauer (.354 AVG, .423 OBP) and Kevin Podell (.307 AVG, .372 OBP) pose the biggest t...

The Panthers, now 22-21 got out to a 4-0 first inning lead against Rocco Cundari, who entered play with a 5-2 record and an ERA of 0.85. Photo Credit: Adelphi Athletics The Adelphi Panthers (21-21) will travel to New Haven today to take on No.1 ranked Southern Connecticut State (24-14-1) in the first-round of the Northeast-10 conference playoffs at 3:30. The two teams met three times this season, with the Owls taking two of three games, the Panthers won 4-3 with John Bivas recording the victory. It will be very important for the Panthers to get depth from their starting pitcher, John Mulford. He has been their most consistent pitcher this season, compiling a 2.84 ERA in 57 innings while holding the opposition to a .222 AVG. Ideally, he will pitch into the seventh inning, so the Panthers can stick to their most reliable relievers; Mike Cranston, Matt Abramowitz and John Donnelly. Those three have the ability to throw strikes...

Marcus Stroman Makes Major League Debut

It was only a matter of time for Marcus Stroman to make his Major League debut. Those who have followed his journey to the big leagues–and those who have competed against him in the past like myself–knew he was destined to make it with the way he has dominated each level. After getting called up, it didn’t take long to get thrown into the fire. He was summoned to pitch in the eighth inning for the Blue Jays against the Pirates with a 7-1 lead. He retired Travis Snyder but allowed a triple to Josh Harrison. The run came in to score on a sacrifice fly. Stroman deserved the promotion, he dominated Triple-A Buffalo to the tune of a 1.69 ERA in 26.2 innings with a 37:7 strikeout to walk ratio. He just turned 23-years-old on May 1, and he appears to have an illustrious career a...
