Photo Credit: Dowling AthleticsDowling is one win away from their pre-season goal For the third consecutive game, the Dowling Golden Lions have received tremendous starting pitching. This time it was senior JJ Bessell, who fired a complete game, allowed three runs and struck out 10 against Wilmington for the 4-3 win. The Golden Lions got out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI double by a Rob Veltre and an RBI groundout by Vinny Orlando. In the meantime, Bessell was working on a masterpiece. He retired the first 11 hitters of the game before a line drive through the box nearly beheaded him. He composed himself and got out of the fourth unscathed. Bessell got into trouble in the fifth, however, when he allowed two hits and two walks to ruin the shutout and temporarily put the lead ...
With the possibility of being sent home for the season, Farmingdale put together a complete effort and disposed of Steven 6-2. Mike Dolce threw 5.1 innings without allowing a run for the victory. His season ERA drops to 3.68. He was relieved by Chris Dragone, who allowed four hits and one run in 3.2 innings to close the door. The offense got out to a 1-0 first inning lead on a wild pitch and added two runs in the second inning on consecutive RBI hits by Kenneth Johntry and Sal Sanguini. Dolce wiggled in-and-out of trouble in the first inning with two base runners and one base runner in each the second and third innings. The Rams increased the lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning on a passed ball and 5-0 in the fifth on a sac fly by Richard Sullivan. Stevens finally got on the board in the fift...
After splitting a double header yesterday with second place Hartford, the stage is set for a crucial rubber game today. They lost the first game 6-1, with Frankie Vanderka suffering his fifth defeat of the season. He went 7.1 and allowed six earned runs. The Sea Wolves compiled only six hits. The Dowling Golden Lions, who were hoping for an at-large bid less than a week ago, are now two wins away from the Division-II College World Series. They powered past Wilmington University 6-1, behind Tom Bammann’s complete game. Bammann, who was recently named Second Team All-Region, won his ninth game of the season. He limited Wilmington to four hits. The only damage came on a ninth inning HR by Sam Goines. He struck out sixth and walked only one. The Golden Lions offense was led by Dan Parisi, who had two hits, three RBI, one run scored and hit a HR. Wilmington committed four errors on defense, uncharacteristic for a team entering with a 35-9 record. It is now Dowling, at 35-15, that is sitting in the driver’s seat. They will play tonight at 7:30, with JJ Bessell most likely...
For the fourth time in five seasons, the Farmingdale Rams followed a regional-opening win with a loss. It is a tough setback, because the path to the finish line will be much more difficult now. They were dropped 14-5 to No. 1 ranked Cortland. We recapped the first seven innings of the game yesterday prior to the rain delay. It was 10-5 when the game was suspended. After the resumption, the Red Dragons added a run in the eighth in three in the ninth to put the game away. Tom Rydzewski compiled two hits for the Rams, who were limited to seven hits. Brandon Serio won his ninth game for Cortland St, while Matt Seelinger lost his first game for the Rams. They will now take on No. 6 Stevens in an elimination game.
After an easy win on Wednesday, Farmingdale moved on to face No. 1 ranked Cortland in the second round of the NY Regionals. They fell behind 10-0 after three-and-a-half innings. Matt Seelinger, winning pitching in the Skyline Conference championship game, got the start but was not effective in 0.2 innings. He was relieved by Dominick Morelli who finished the first inning. The Rams did not lie over and die, they have battled back and cut the deficit in half to 10-5, thanks to RBI hits by Ryan Levine, Sal Sanguini and Ed Bergmann. After straining runners in the sixth inning, the sky opened up and delayed the play. The game was suspended and will resume today at 4:30. A win would put the Rams in tremendous position, but a loss would mean an extremely tough scenario of needing four consecutive...
Perhaps entering the tournament with a chip on their shoulder, the Dowling Golden Lions shut out Franklin Pierce 3-0 in the first round of the East Regional Tournament. Tyler Badamo performed as he has all season; complete game shutout, five hits, eight strikeouts for his ninth victory of the season against three losses. He now has 125 strikeouts in 108 innings and a 0.76 ERA. “I was pretty locked in,” he said. He has been locked in against Pierce all season, having not allowed an earned run in 17.2 innings against a 35-win team. The offense did not need to come out firing, but JC Brandmeier got them on the board quick with a solo HR in the second inning. That’s all that was needed, but they added two more on a HR Dan Parisi. They will take on the winner of Wilmington and...
Photo Credit: Farmingdale Athletics The Farmingdale Rams advanced to the winner’s bracket with a 4-2 win over No. 4 Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday morning. They got out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI double by Danny Paccione. He advanced to third on a sac bunt and stole home when Sanguini was thrown out attempting to steal second. In the top of the third, they increased the lead to 3-0 on an error by the third baseman, and Mike Marino made it hurt with an RBI single two batters later to stretch the lead to four. Alex Weingarten started, but was taken out after 4.2 innings, having allowed one run on three hits and three walks. It was unusual for him, he has earned the trust of the coaching staff to pitch out of trouble. Nevertheless, Timmy Trimarchi came in and got out ...

Hofstra has dug themselves a hole entering the final weekendPhoto Credit: Hofstra Athletics For much of the season, Hofstra was in the thick of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) standings, hovering around .500. After a losing a weekend series two of three to the College of Charleston, they are not helping their cause. They are now 19-23 on the season with a record of 7-11 in the CAA, good enough for seventh place. In their lone win of the weekend, they won 4-2. The combination of David D’Errico and Brett Schrieber was successful once again with the starter throwing five innings of two-run ball with the dominant closer throwing four shutout innings for his ninth save of the season. The two combined for 12 strikeouts, the highest total of the season. The Pride backed him with t...
Photo Credit: NYIT Athletics It was not a season to be proud of for the NYIT Bears. They compiled a dismal record of 4-46, including a 10-game losing streak to finish the season. They went 0-4 in February, 1-13 in March, 3-19 in April and 0-10 in May. The team batting average was .228, with a .295 slugging percentage and .313 on-base percentage. Their leading hitter was Joe Daru, who hit .301 with 31 stolen bases in 34 attempts. The pitching staff compiled a 6.84 ERA, and the individual statistics are a bit tough to bear. Aside from Cohen’s 1.23 ERA in 7.1 innings, the next best ERA is 4.50 by Tommy Cardona in 18 innings. Five pitchers had ERA over 11.81. It was a tough season all around. Here’s to hoping the program is able to turn around and field a competitive team next seas...
Mike Marino will look to lead the Rams to the CWSPhoto Credit: Farmingdale Athletics The Farmingdale Rams will enter the NY regional as the No. 5 seed, according to the NCAA. The tournament will begin on Wednesday. The Rams automatically qualified for the tournament after defeating Old Westbury to win the Skyline Conference for the seventh consecutive season. They enter with a record of 25-11, but are a different team on the road. They were 7-7 on the road, versus 15-2 at home. Additionally, they will have the misfortune of possibly facing Kean and Cortland St. in the same tournament. The Rams just lost 10-1 to Kean in a non-conference game on Saturday. They are a perennial powerhouse that won the Division-III World Series in 2007. The Cougars are 34-10 on the season, and have advanced to ...
