They did so with a 4-2 win over a tough New Haven team. The Golden Lions were outhit 11-7, but it did not matter, they pushed across the runs they needed. Dylan Piscitelli drove in a run with an RBI single in the fourth inning that proved to be the game-winning run. Cody McPartland started for the Golden Lions and he went two innings. He was on a strict pitch count because of ...
Photo Credit: Vinny Messana The Mineola Mustangs are coming off a strong 2014 campaign that was “three years in the making”, according to 18th year Head Coach Helms Bohringer. “They did everything they were supposed to do from a work ethic standpoint,” said Bohringer, who was a 37th round draft pick out of Adelphi in 1989. “They believed that they could win and sometimes that a tough thing when you came up as sophomores and you’re losing,” he added. Those years of experience, combined with an abundance of talent, allowed the Mustangs to compile a 14-7 record and qualify for a playoff berth. Unfortunately, they were defeated by Lynbrook and Hewlett in the playoffs in the double-elimination tournament. Having lost four of their seniors graduate and m...
Photo Credit: LIU Post Athletics After dropping their first four games of the season, the LIU Post Pioneers showed some resiliency by coming back from a 4-0 deficit to beat Bloomfield College 6-4 in Lantana, Fla. Relief pitcher Dillon Burke earned his first win of the season by throwing four scoreless innings and striking out four after Bloomfield had scored one run in four consecutive innings. The offense was aggressive all day–as they compiled 15 hits. Tom Tolan paced the attack with three hits. Vinny Iacono, Rich Maccarone and Anthony Brunetti all compiled multi-hit games as well. The Pioneers tied the game up in the eighth on a run-scoring double by 2b Matt Bowers. They took the lead when Maccarone smacked a two-run single to break a 4-4 tie. They outhit Bloomfield 15-6. The only...
Photo Credit: USA Today Long Island took a hit today when it was announced that Toronto Blue Jay’s RHP Marcus Stroman tore his ACL during a Spring Training fielding drill. Stroman, the pride of Patchogue-Medford high school, had a terrific 2014 campaign in which he was 11-6 with a 3.65 ERA. As a starter, he had a 3.39 ERA over 120 IP. He struck out 3.81 batters for every walk and allowed only 1.14 base runners per inning. Most impressively, in my opinion, was his ability to respond from a tough August. Many pundits believed he hit a wall and should be shut down for the season. Instead, he went 3-1 in September with a 2.61 ERA over 31 innings, while he struck out 26. Entering the offseason, many people became high on him. ESPN writer Jayson Stark even devoted an entire column to him l...
Photo Credit: St. Louis Athletics An athlete on a mission is often like a runaway train. It cannot be stopped. Holbrook native and Tampa Bay Rays prospect Alec Sole was not content with his professional debut in 2014 and made sure he did something to rectify that.“Everyday I had one thing on my mind–getting better at the sport I love,” said Sole. “Hopefully the hard work will pay off,” he added.Despite finishing college and balancing 18 credits this winter, Sole made sure he found time to get to the gym four days per week to gain strength while honing his craft at All Pro Sports Academy.Sole noted that he gained weight this offseason in a “healthy manner.”In general, 2014 was a tremendous year for Sole when you consider his performance in college w...
Photo Credit: Old Westbury Athletics Kean stayed unbeaten with a 6-1 win over Old Westbury. The Cougars are now 5-0 on the season. They received a tremendous effort from starting pitcher Emilio Calderon–who threw eight innings, allowing just one run on five hits and no walks. The Panthers actually got on top 1-0 in the first inning on an RBI single by Eddie Hernandez. The lead was short lived, however, when the Cougars responded with two runs in their half of the first. They scored on an RBI single by Tom McGuckin and a sac fly by Ryan Reitmeyer. They never looked back, with Calderon settling down and dominating in the meantime. The Panthers were held to five hits–with Hernandez accounting for two of them. Nick Schoen was the losing pitcher. He lasted three innings, allowed thr...
Photo Credit: Todd MontgomeryUniversity of Tampa is the No. 1 ranked Div. II team in the nation The University of Tampa can smack the baseball. They are the No.1 ranked team in the country and they showed LIU Post why with a 20-9 victory. They entered the game with a .341 AVG as a team, and boosted that with a 20-hit performance. Aside from the bottom of the first, Tampa scored in every inning–including four in the third, five in the fifth and six in the eighth. Ian Townsend went 4-for-5 with seven RBI to lead the Spartans. He hit a sac fly in the third inning, RBI single in the fourth, bases clearing triple in the fifth and a two-run triple in the eighth. He had 19 RBI already this season. The Pioneers did put up a fight on two separate occasions. They put up a four-spot in the fou...

Photo Credit: SUNY Old Westbury Athletics Kean wasn’t content beating just one Long Island team. After coming back to beat St. Joseph’s, they beat Old Westbury 12-4. Ace Tim Ingram struggled mightily with his command. In his 4.2 innings of work, he walked six and threw three wild pitches–very uncharacteristic from the reigning Skyline Pitcher of the Year. He allowed four earned runs while striking out four. “It was the first time we’ve been out of the gym as a while so there was some kinks that needed to be worked out,” said Ingram. “The mound wasn’t terrible but it definitely wasn’t good and a real tight zone wasn’t much help,” he added. He was relieved by Caleb Olsen, who allowed five runs in 0.2 innings of work. In total,...
Photo Credit: St. Joseph’s Athletics After five cancellations, the St. Joseph’s Golden Eagles were able to kick off their 2015 campaign against Kean University. They dropped a close one 5-4 to the perennial powerhouse. Entering the bottom of the ninth, the Golden Eagles actually held a 4-2 lead with Nick Girardi on the hill. After a single and a walk to begin the frame, Kean executed a sacrifice bunt to get the tieing run in scoring position. Pinch-hitter Anthony Fischetti came through with a two-run single to tie the game. He also stole second and third. The following batter walked and stole second to get in scoring position with one out. Scott Durkin ended the game with a single to send St. Joseph’s home on a sour note. Starting Pitching Ryan Aloise threw a terrific gam...
Photo Credit: Vinny Messana Stony Brook split their double header today with Fordham in a set of games that was closed to the public. They won the first game 6-1 behind Tyler Honahan, but were defeated 9-6 in the night cap. In the first game, Honahan received the victory by throwing six strong innings, allowing only three hits, walking one, allowing one ER and striking out five. Fordham got out to an early 1-0 in the third inning on a triple by Ryan McNally and an RBI single by Mark Donadio. The Sea Wolves responded promptly with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Robert Chaverria drove in two with a single and it was followed by Cole Peragine’s run-scoring hit. That was all Honahan would need. The southpaw was dominant in his six innings. Stony Brook added one in t...
Photo Credit: C.W. Post Athletics The C.W. Post Pioneers had the right idea by traveling to Florida to play some baseball. They dropped their season opener, however, 2-1 to Post University. The Pioneers bats did not warm up with the weather–they were held to four hits. Graduate student Rich Maccarone accounted for two of those. Their lone run came across in the fourth inning on a wild pitch that scored David Groeneveld. At that point, the Pioneers appeared to be in control, as Jake DeCarli was firing zeros and holding the opposition hitless. That changed in the bottom of the fifth when Post scored both of their runs on an RBI double by catcher Bryan McKenna (2-for-3). DeCarli hurled a tremendous game–six innings, two earned, three hits, two walks and four strikeouts. It was not...
