After their eight seniors were honored, Adelphi made it worth it by clinching fourth place in the southwest division of the Northeast-10 conference which qualifies them for a postseason berth. After losing the first game, they sent their ace Jonathon Mulford to the hill. He won his seventh game of the season, against zero losses by throwing six shutout innings to lower his ERA to 1.85. He allowed only two hits, walked none while striking out five batters. He has been terrific this season. The offense provided him with plenty of runs. They smacked 18 hits and scored 14 runs.Nick Zito led the day with four hits, four runs scored while driving in three runs. Donato Signore had three hits, as did Kory Cassara, who sco...
Photo Credit: Old Westbury Athletics It will be Farmingdale and Old Westbury duking it out for the Skyline Conference championship yet again beginning at 11 am. Old Westbury will have the advantage of needing just one win to be crowned champs since they enter the finals unbeaten. After being Farmingdale yesterday 2-1, they topped No. 1 seed St. Joseph’s today 6-5 on a walk off single by Eddie Hernandez. The Panthers trailed 5-4 entering the ninth inning against St. Joseph’s ace Josh Outsen. and they were down to their final two out after Tommy Zeigen flew out. Pinch hitter Jake Schwartz got it started with a double down the line. Pinch hitter Robert Crocitto singled home pinch runner Jesse Matos to tie the game. That chased Outsen from the game and Michael Catanzaro came in reli...
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBqLzvciA0I] It wasn’t the championship game, but Old Westbury certainly exercised some demons against their rivals; Farmingdale State.with a 2-1 win. Starter Tim Ingram threw a gutsy complete game, allowing one run on seven hits, one walk and eight strikeouts in front of a bevy of Major League scouting directors. He threw 125 pitches and there was never even a reliever warming up in the bullpen. “I knew coming into the game that Farmingdale wasn’t going to be an easy team to play in the first round but I looked forward to it,” said Ingram. “They were a good team all around and hit the balll but we just had a few big hits at the right times and played great defense all game. I think we have what it takes to win the champ...
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKCSGrhKQJA]Trailing 2-1 in the sixth inning and facing the prospect of losing the first game of the tournament, right fielder Anthony Bonilla smoked a two-run double to give the St. Joseph’s a 3-2 lead. It was a lead they never relinquished.No. 1 seed St. Joseph’s powered past No. 4 Maritime on the strength of a six-run sixth inning and a pair of crooked numbers in the seventh and eighth inning.Ryan Aloise started for the Golden Eagles and got off to a rocky start. After walking the first batter on a 3-2 pitch, he allowed a wind-blown two-run homer to Joe Longo which temporarily silenced the hometown crowd. He settled in after that and stifled the Maritime offense for the remainder of the game. He went on to throw all nine innings, allowi...
Photo Credit: Farmingdale State Athletics The Skyline Conference playoffs will begin today at Gregg Alfano Field on the campus of St. Joseph’s College. They earned that right by going 13-1 during Conference play. Farmingdale State is the seven-time defending champions. This dates back to 2008. I was a part of the 2010′-’11 club that beat Old Westbury in the finals both years. The two teams have met in the finals every year since then as well with the same results. They will meet in the first round today. Here’s a quick preview of the two match ups today. No.1 St. Joseph’s vs No. 4 Maritime 1 pmSt. Joseph’s is looking to win their first Skyline Conference championship since 2002, back when it required two victories to be crowned champions. This year it wi...
Photo Credit: St. Joseph’s Athletics Following the 2002 MLB season, Tom Glavine was already an established Major League pitcher with two Cy Young Awards, two second place finishes and another third place finish. He had already won 252 games and was well on his way to Cooperstown. He made headlines by leaving his team, the Atlanta Braves, whom he had won 14-straight National League East division titles with for their rival–the New York Mets. The reaction was mixed–with some supporting his decision to pursue a bigger payday while others questioned why his loyalty had wavered in the organization that nurtured him and watched him mature into the second-best left-handed pitcher of the generation. This is a decision made much easier in exchange for millions of dollars. For a 21-ye...

Of the Bears’ eight hits, leadoff man Joe Daru had three of those. He also scored two runs. Louis Mele had two hits and scored a run as well. They are now 12-23 on the season. Hofstra lost 5-2 to Monmouth University to drop to 15-26 on the season. They briefly held a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a sac fly by Brian...
Photo Credit: Molloy Athletics And then there were seven. Molloy was eliminated from postseason contention with their loss to Mercy by the score of 8-6. Despite their 20-20 record, they fell to 8-12 in ECC play. They join the list of Hofstra and NYIT as teams that will not qualify for postseason play this season. They entered the season knowing that underclassmen would play significant roles, but many of them had experience during their 2014 playoff appearance in which they surprised some people and defeated St. Thomas Aquinas in the first round of the ECC tournament. This season they came out of the gate strong but have scuffled of the late. They lost four consecutive conference games last week and that is enough to spoil postseason hopes. Yesterday it was a four-run sixth inning that did t...

Photo Credit: Jim Ferchland Aside from Stony Brook’s sweep of Albany and Dowling clinching a postseason berth, it was not the cheeriest of Sundays for Long Island teams. Division-I: NYIT lost 5-1 to Binghamton to lose the series. A four-run fifth inning was the difference in the ballgame. David Plotkin started and was tagged with the loss for the Bears. He didn’t have his best control–he walked six in five innings for his first loss of the season. The Bears will host Albany in a DH on Tuesday that is re-scheduled from March 10. Hofstra was swept by Northeastern this weekend. The third game was an 8-3 final which dropped the Pride to 15-25 on the season. Photo Credit: Molloy Athletics Molloy was swept in a DH today by Mercy by the scores of 4-3 and 5-3, but that should not overshadow the spectacular pitching performance by ace Shea Spitzbarth in the first game. The junior from Staten Island pitched the first 10 innings in the 14-inning marathon. He allowed no ER, only three hits and five walks while striking out 17 batters. He threw 143 pitches. On the season, he now has a 1.80 ERA over 55 innings with 83 strikeouts while holding opposing batters to a .204 average. He nearly got the win, as Molloy scored a run in the 11th inning on an RBI single by Anthony Alberghina but the bullpen could not hold the lead. In the bottom of the 14th, Mercy won it on a sac fly to conclude the 3:28 marathon. The loss was incredibly painful for the Lions’...
