A cold rainy Thursday afternoon couldn’t cool off the Garden City Trojans, as they cruised to a 5-0 shutout home victory over the Carey Seahawks on April 10. Zach Zander was the star of the show for the Trojans, pitching six innings of shutout baseball in which he struck out six and didn’t walk a single batter. After the game, Zander praised his defense, who turned two double plays during the game, and helped keep the Seahawks off the scoresheet.
“It’s hard enough to pitch in the cold,” Zander said. “It makes it so much easier when you have seven guys behind you that are making every play. We had two or three double plays that got us out of the inning, which is really big.”
Garden City wasted zero time putting runs on the board, as senior Stony Brook commit Evan Cabral sent the first pitch he saw deep over the left field wall to give the Trojans an early 1-0 lead just two batters into the game. Cabral’s homer set the tone for the Trojans, who were able to maintain their offensive momentum for the remainder of the contest.
While Cabral made a big impact at the top of the Trojans lineup, it was the bottom half of the lineup that shineed for Garden City, as four of the five Garden City runs came from the bottom four hitters in their lineup.
In the second inning, Garden City expanded their lead, as both Jake Brown and Justin Baiker drove in a pair of RBI singles to give Garden City a 3-0 lead. One inning later the Trojans added two more, as Will Jewell, and Brown delivered back-to-back run scoring singles. The third inning would be the final inning in which runs were scored.
The starter on the mound for the Seahawks was Mike Agostino. Agostino pitched the first four innings for Carey, allowing five runs on eight hits. Agostino struck out three, walked three and was charged with the loss in the game. Agostino was replaced by Joseph Camarda in the bottom of the fifth inning, who pitched the final two innings of the game.
After pitching the first six innings of the game, Zander was replaced by Jimmy Trocchia, who shut the door for the Trojans in the top of the seventh inning. The game was the final of a three game series between the two teams, with Carey winning the first on April 7, and Garden City winning the following two to take the three game series.
The Trojans will next travel to Seaford to take on the Vikings on April 11.
