The Port Jefferson Royals have enjoyed a remarkable run of success over the past few years, making it to the County Championship game three years in a row. After winning the Long Island Championship in 2022 and securing the County Title in 2023, the Royals faced a tough loss in the 2024 County Finals. Despite the defeat, Coach Jesse Rosen remains optimistic about the future and is looking to rebuild as the team enters the 2025 season.
Reflecting on last season, Rosen notes the challenge of losing a strong group of senior leaders, including five starters. However, he’s confident that the team’s younger players, including four freshmen who saw action in the critical Game 3 of the County Finals, gained invaluable experience that will help drive the team forward.
“It was a really cool mix for us last year,” Rosen said. “We had an experienced senior group alongside some young guys who gained critical postseason experience. Now, we’re looking to build on that success and continue growing.”
The Royals’ resilience was on full display during the playoffs last season, particularly in their thrilling elimination-game victory against Babylon. “We had a nine-run fifth inning in Game 2 against Babylon,” Rosen recalls. “That come-from-behind victory propelled us to Game 3 and showed the grit and willingness to compete that we preach to our players. It was a big moment for us, and we’re hoping to carry that energy into this season.”
In terms of preparation, the Royals have been hard at work during the offseason, with a renewed focus on work ethic and discipline. “Whether they’re in the gym, in the cage, or out on the field, the team has put in the work,” Rosen stated. “I’m really pleased with the effort and dedication I’ve seen, and it’s clear that our players are driven to improve.”
As for leadership, Rosen expects key seniors to step up in prominent roles this year.
“Joey Aronica and Matthew Wengatz are two seniors who will hit in the middle of our lineup. Both have proven to be crucial pieces of our team,” he said. Aronica, in particular, had an impressive 2024 season, posting a .365 batting average and a .470 on-base percentage. “Joey’s consistency and leadership are invaluable,” Rosen added.
The team is also looking to its younger players to make a significant impact in 2025.
Sophomore pitcher Jack Krause, who will also play outfield, is poised for a breakout season. “Jack is a big part of our pitching staff and will be counted on to deliver for us,” said Rosen. Additionally, juniors like Sam Matvya, who hit .390 last season, and Derek Wonderland and Ben Amadio, both of whom have made strides as players, will be vital to the Royals’ success.
Returning catcher Evan Raymond, a three-year starter, will also play a critical role for the team this season, contributing both behind the plate and at first base. “Evan’s experience and versatility are huge for us,” Rosen remarked. “He’ll be a leader on the field, guiding the pitching staff and anchoring the infield.”
With a strong mix of experienced players and promising young talent, Port Jefferson’s baseball team is focused on building on the success of the past few years while pushing for another championship run. As the 2025 season unfolds, all eyes will be on this resilient group of Royals as they look to prove that their best days are still ahead.
Now, with a fresh season on the horizon, the team is back stronger, faster, and more determined than ever. Led by key returners and a roster stacked with experience, the Royals have their sights set on reclaiming championship glory.
The Royals will open their season against Pierson on March 31.
