As the second weekend of college baseball is in full swing, Saturday’s slate featured nine local teams in action. Here is all that went down:
Division-I:
Wake Forest 11, St. John’s 0
The Johnnies were blanked on Saturday as Wake Forest starter Matthew Dallas fired six innings of one-run baseball.
The big blow came in the third when Wake Forest took a 1-0 game, and turned it into a 6-0 advantage with a five-spot. Center fielder Ethan Conrad brought home a pair with a single before first baseman Jack Winnay hit his second longball of the game.
Four Demon Deacons tallied multiple hits while former St. John’s star Jimmy Keenan went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two walks. Second baseman Antonio Morales went 3-for-5 in the leadoff spot while baseman Jack Winnay went 2-for-3 with the two home runs and three RBIs. Conrad also had two hits.
St. John’s only managed two hits all night. On the pitching side, Tyler Longoria was the standout, firing 1 ⅓ of scoreless relief.
The Johnnies will look to salvage the series as the two sides will meet on Sunday at 1 p.m. Wake Forest has outscored St. John’s 18-0 over the series’ first two games.

After a disastrous opening weekend against the reigning national champion Tennessee Volunteers, the Pride finally got in the win column on Saturday, walking off Iona at Farmingdale State.
Despite trailing 6-4 in the sixth, Hofstra tied the game in the ninth when second baseman Dylan Palmer dashed home on a passed ball. An inning later, pinch runner Jake Harring followed suit, scoring the winning run on a wild pitch.
Palmer led the Pride with three hits in five trips to the plate as he also swiped two bases and scored two runs. Right fielder Luke Masiuk hit a three-run homer for his only hit which aided the Pride’s four-run fourth inning.
Grady Lacourciere threw 3 ⅓ innings out of Hofstra’s bullpen, allowing just a single run and struck out six.
Designated hitter Sean Stephenson had three hits including a double in the loss for Iona.
The two sides will meet back at Farmingdale State on Sunday for a double-header to wrap up the series.

While the bats went silent on Friday night, Saturday brought plenty of offense as the Seawolves and Eagles combined for 23 hits. After FGCU took a quick 4-0 lead against Stony Brook starter Nick Rizzo, RBIs from shortstop Matt Miceli, third baseman Evan Goforth and left fielder Chanz Doughty briefly tied the game at four apiece.
However, the Eagles took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth. Center fielder Harrison Povey launched a go-ahead solo homer before FGCU added on in later innings.
Second baseman Johnny Pilla went 3-for-5 in the loss for Stony Brook while centerfielder Chris Carson also had multiple hits. Jacob Pedersen and Matt Sgambati combined for 2 ⅔ innings of scoreless relief whereas the rest of the pitching staff struggled.
For the Eagles, first baseman Robert Moya went 3-for-5 while scoring three times and second baseman Javier Gorostola went 4-for-5 with a double and four RBIs. FGCU only gave up two earned runs all afternoon, and the bullpen turned in 5 ⅓ innings, giving up a single run.
Game three in Fort Myers is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Indiana 15, Fordham 2
In the Rams second game of the weekend at the USA Baseball Complex, it was all Hoosiers, who racked up 15 runs on 12 hits.
Four Indiana players had two or more hits while three tallied multiple RBIs. Center fielder Korbyn Dickerson went 2-for-5 with a home run and 4 runs driven in. Second baseman Jasen Oliver had just one hit in six trips, but drove in three runs.
Left fielder Taylor Kirk was Fordham’s only hitter with more than a single hit and managed to score one of the Rams’ two runs.
Before heading home, Fordham will match up with Northwestern for a double header on Sunday to wrap up the weekend.
UTSA 13, LIU 0
Despite being tied through three innings, LIU found itself on the wrong side of the run-rule on Saturday.
The Roadrunners broke out with six runs in the fourth inning, helped by a three-run homer from center fielder Mason Lytle. From there, UTSA added two in the fifth and five in the sixth, taking the second game of the weekend by a final of 13-0.
Lytle went 4-for-4 with a home run, a double and four RBI. First baseman Caden Miller also had three hits, a home run and four runs driven in. Third baseman Norris McClure went 3-for-3 in the cleanup spot. UTSA starter Braylon Owens notched six shutout innings while striking out eight LIU batters.
The Sharks managed just two hits on the day and all but two of their five arms gave up multiple runs.
Games 3 and 4 from San Antonio are set to be played on Sunday, as part of a double header.
Division II:
Game 1: Mercy 15, Adelphi 1
Game 2: Mercy 4, Adelphia 2
After opening its season with a win on Friday, Adelphi dropped both ends of a double-dip against Mercy, getting outscored 19-3.
The Mavericks ran away with game one, scoring five runs in the third inning and seven in the ninth. Six different players for Mercy notched multiple hits while Adelphi tallied just four hits overall, coming from four different players.
The Panthers kept the second game close, holding Mercy to just four runs on four hits. Adelphi was also thrown a lifeline as the Mavericks committed three errors and two wild pitches — both of which created Panther runs.
At the end of the day, it was two Mercy runs in the fourth which proved to be the difference.
Adelphi will get the College of Staten Island on Sunday for a double header to conclude the weekend.
Chestnut Hill 5, Molloy 0
Molloy was blanked on Saturday, managing just four hits against the Chestnut Hill Griffins.
Griffins starting pitcher Chad Bonino did the heavy lifting, going six scoreless innings before giving way to the bullpen. Luke Schweiker picked up the save, going three innings to nail down the back-end of the ballgame.
Molloy did not have any hitters with more than a single hit, while Chestnut Hill got multi-hit games from second baseman Phoenix Bowman and shortstop Kenyon Motley. Bowman also went deep and scored twice.
The Lions will wrap up their opening weekend on Sunday against Post University. First pitch is set for 9 a.m.
Division III:
St. John Fisher 2, Maritime 1
After weather canceled their true season opener, the Privateers were unable to come back late against St. John Fisher.
The Cardinals took the lead with single runs in the second and fifth courtesy of a sacrifice fly by center fielder Jimmy McCardle and an RBI single by left fielder Jackson Frey, respectively.
Maritime tried to orchestrate a comeback in the eighth, when catcher Michael Frazzetta singled home his team’s first run of the game. Unfortunately for the Privateers, they would leave the tying run at second base as St. John Fisher sealed the 2-1 win.
First baseman Alex Bardi went 3-for-4 as the only Maritime player with multiple hits. Third baseman Jack Griffin and catcher Andrew Roman each notched two knocks for the Cardinals.
The Privateers will finish their opening weekend with an 11 a.m. rematch with St. John Fisher, before taking on Johns Hopkins at 2:30 p.m.
