Jake King Commits to Iona University

While 2024 was not a great season for Sachem East, they did have to be thrilled with the progress of sophomore RJP Jake King. The big righty had a very solid season for the Arrows, compiling a 3.20 ERA over 6 starts with 27 strikeouts. He formed a formidable rotation along with Jamie Apicella and Austin Barrett.

Following the season, King took his game to the next level for the Body Armor Titans. He notched a 6-1record while firing 37 innings with a sparkling 1.10 ERA. He struck out 52 batters while yielding just 22 hits (.170 opponent AVG).

His high school coach, Kevin Schnupp had the following to say:

“Jake has become a team leader this year in our fall workouts. He’s looking to build off a successful sophomore campaign in a tough league. He was the type of pitcher with a bulldog mentality always ready to make the tough start no matter what the past outcome was in the last game. He struck out 27 batters over 6 starts with a 3.20 ERA.  Jake also played first when he wasn’t pitching and we look for him to be a huge part of our lineup this year at Sachem East. He had a huge summer for the Body Armor Titans throwing against the top competition in the country. In talking to Coach Burke from Iona, we discussed his work ethic and the bulldog mentality that doesn’t allow him to get rattled. Jake throws a tremendous amount of strikes and is working on perfecting his off speed pitches to increase his number of strikeouts. His mental makeup and physicality make him a Division-I caliber pitcher. ”

Another person that knows him well is his personal pitching coach, Anthony Papa. I spoke with Papa and he had the following to say:

“Jake is one of the hardest working pitchers we have in the building. Since October, he’s in here 3-4 times per week always trying to get better. He’s consistently locked in all the time. Jake’s a great kid and teammate, very coachable and has been a pleasure to work with.

I had a chance to speak with Jake and here’s what he had to say…
