Andrew Caramico, a rising junior at Chaminade HS, burst onto the scene this summer for Next Level Brewers. He fired 71 innings, he notched a stellar 1.57 ERA and struck out an incredible 108 batters while yielding just 36 hits – just over 4.5 per 9 innings.
He has yet to pitch in a varsity game, but that is not unusual in this era. He will certainly be a player to watch over the next two season as the Chaminade Flyers attempt to regain their status as the premier Catholic League team on Long Island – which they were from 2019-2022 before getting unseated by Holy Trinity in the championship series in 2023 at Hofstra.
If they are going to get there in 2025 under first year coach Patrick Kemp they will need to rely on their next wave of impact players. Caramico is one of those players. They’ve had a few recent commits such as RHP Quinn Quillen, infielder Danny Nawrocki and there will be more soon.
Caramico’s pitching coach Bobby DeMichael, one of the most well-respected on Long Island, has been working with him for a while. He had the following to say:
“Been with Andrew for 2 years. His work ethic and dedication is what has separated him. It hasn’t always been easy for him, he’s had some starts this spring where he struggled to command the zone, watching him battle through it and making adjustments was admirable for a 15-year-old. It really showed what kind of character he has, being able to come back and figure it out and have the season he had means a lot. His best days are ahead of him, as he grows and fills out his frame, he’s got a very high ceiling and excited to see what he can accomplish at St. John’s with Coach Brown!”
I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say…
Can you explain your experience with college recruiting process and why you chose St. John’s?
This summer, I had the opportunity to travel with Next Level Baseball, an experience I am deeply grateful for. Their support and guidance placed me in the best possible spot, allowing me to pitch in significant events with many coaches watching. When August 1st came, I was humbled by the amount of schools that reached out and thankful to all those coaches. St. John’s was among the first to reach out. On our first phone call, I immediately connected with Coach George Brown. I chose St. John’s because they showed great interest in me and my future. I am excited about the role St. John’s will play in shaping my future, and I believe I will be an excellent fit for the Johnnies.
Who are some people that have had a positive impact on your career?
I want to start with my parents, sister, and family. Without their support, none of this would have happened. Shaun Manning, who runs Next Level Baseball, coached me all summer, challenging me to improve daily. His dedication to my growth has been invaluable. Bobby DeMichael, my pitching coach, built me from the ground up. Lastly, being a Chaminade Flyer and pitching in the best league in New York State cannot be understated. The coaches at Chaminade have significantly influenced me over the last two years.
