Bobby Wescott Commits to Stony Brook

Bobby Wescott had a terrific 2024 season for the Plainedge Red Devils. Though he was just a sophomore, he led the way offensively with a .420 batting average, .553 OBP and incredible 1.321 OPS. He compiled 29 hits, six doubles, six triples, four HRs, drove in 29 runs and scored 15 runs.

He recently announced his commitment to Stony Brook University. He still has two full seasons of high school remaining, which is certainly bad news for opposing pitchers.

His coach Colin Fratrik had the following to say:

“Bobby has been an outstanding player for us. His freshman season he was our cleanup hitter, but missed 4 weeks of league play due to an injury.

This past season, he batted third for us and was solid all year long. He has tremendous power, and hits to all fields. Defensively, he is primarily a first baseman. But he played RF for us since we had Nick Gerardi at 1B, he will look move to 1B this upcoming season.

Most importantly, he is a pleasure to coach…He is a great teammate, works as hard as anyone and truly loves the game.”

We had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say…

Can you explain your experience with the college recruiting process and why you chose Stony Brook?

My process was to get seen, I attended many college baseball camps traveling up and down the east coast with my family. I felt that gave me the experience to play in many different places, meet and talk to a variety of coaches and the players themselves. Ultimately, it was the Titans who put me in front of coaches in big tournaments like the WWBA, and prospects camps that led me to Stony Brook. Stony Brook is a great fit for me in terms of education and the CAA is an amazing conference. I’m excited to play and travel with them.

Who are some people that have had a positive impact on your career?

My parents are my biggest fans and I have had amazing coaches. Brian Anderson gave me a very strong foundation and led us to winning Cooperstown in 2021. Now I am lucky to have coach Nate Vigeant who isn’t just an amazing travel coach but a college coach himself which gives me so many perspectives to playing the game. Through the years, I have had guidance working with Neal Heaton and Tom Downey has been instrumental in my recruiting process.

Do you work with any private instructors?

I work with the amazing Belding Performance for strength and conditioning. Brian Anderson is my hitting instructor and Neal Heaton for pitching.

Any family members that played college sports?

My dad played Div-I football for St. John’s, my sister played her first two years at the Div-I level playing college softball for Queens University of Charlotte and is now transferring to pitch at Newberry College.

Who are some Major League players you try to model your game after?

Logan O’Hoppe. I have had the chance to get to know him through my years as a Titan, and I even had the opportunity to go watch him play spring training in Tempe, Arizona. He shows us that hard work does pay off. He also taught me the importance of a “show belt.” Great purchase, thanks Logan!

What has been your most thrilling moment on a baseball field?

12u was an awesome year and winning Cooperstown was just a great feeling.
