by Joe Bello

On a very hot July 11th evening, LIB Select took on LI Elite Venegas in a LI Boys of Summer 14u American Division game.

Ryan Brush was a big contributor in this one, leading Elite to a 10-1 mercy rule win. Brush went 2 for 3 with a double and 5 RBIs.

Jack Gerbosi also was hot on offense, going 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs for Elite.

Elite started the offense early in the 1st inning. Landon Behrens worked an RBI walk to drive in the first run. Then Brush crushed a bases clearing double to center field, giving Elite a 4-0 lead.

LIB got one back in the bottom half of the inning, with a perfectly executed hit and run. Frankie Menfre with the single, driving in Lucian Roman who was in motion.

Pete Imbriano led off the 2nd with a double for Elite, was bunted over to third and then driven in for their 5th run. Jack Gerbosi picked up the RBI on that play.

Elite continued to build on their lead in the top of the 3rd inning. Brush started off the scoring with an RBI, his 4th of the day. Elite loaded the bases once again, and Imbriano drew a walk to score the 7th run for his team.

Gerbosi came up clutch again for Elite, picking up his 2nd and 3rd RBI with a single to center field. This gave them a 9-1 lead through 3 innings.

Elite tacked on another in the 4th to extend their lead to 10-1, with Brush ripping a single to center field. This gave him his 5th RBI of the game.

Due to the mercy rule, the game would end after both teams were held scoreless in the 5th inning.

Axcess Baseball spoke to Ryan Brush following his stellar performance at the plate.

When asked what his thought process at the plate is, Brush gave a great answer.

“I try to think of something funny,” He said, “to keep my mind off baseball. Whenever I think too much about baseball I do worse. So thinking of something funny helps me do better.”

Brush also spoke on what he tries to do with runners in scoring position when he is at the plate.

“I always try to hit a ball in the gap or over the outfielders head.” He shared, “So I can ensure that run scores and we get a lead on a team early.”

Elite improved to a record of 4-9 in the 14u American Division of LI Boys of Summer, while LIB dropped to 2-7.
