Ken Kortright State Farm Game of the Week: Dom Carleo Fires No-Hitter With 12 Ks in 1-0 Pitcher’s Duel Against Wheatley

by Aaron Diaz

Dominic Carleo threw a no-hitter against the Wheatley Wildcats in their 1-0 victory, Game 1 of a crucial three-game set that will determine who captures Conference B.

“I felt great on the mound,” Dominic Carleo said. “I was really just attacking the zone early and trusted my defense with a lot of groundballs today. I was piling the zone, attacking batters and we got the win.”

Carleo finished the day with tallying up 12 strikeouts and five walks in his no-hitting performance.

“I wanted to command my fastball,” Carleo said. “Throughout the season my fastball has been my best pitch by far and I’ve been locating it well. I have a lot of faith in my hitters as well. Coming in clutch and scoring that run.”

The two teams came into their matchup on Wednesday one game apart with Oyster Bay holding a 9-0 record and Wheatley standing at 8-1 on the season.

In their heated matchup, Oyster Bay sent out their ace against Wheatley’s ace, Connor Quinn. The two pitchers dueled it out for the first four innings as they racked up strikeouts respectively.

The only action in this game came in the fourth with a runner on second base. Brendan O’Brien laced a single into the left-center gap as the Baymen took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

Both pitchers continued to cruise as Connor Quinn also had himself a day pitching a complete game for the Wildcats with 14 strikeouts, allowing just five hits and one walk.

In the seventh, Carleo got himself into some trouble walking two guys, putting the tying run at second and the winning run on first. As he continued to push the envelope, Wheatley’s Casey Quinn grounded out to second for the last out locking in the no-hitter for Carleo.

Being the first game of the series, Oyster Bay and Wheatley will continue their series with the next game on Thursday, May 2. Oyster Bay is now 10-0 in league play while Wheatley slips to 8-2.
