Sean Atkinson’s six shutout innings helped the Holy Trinity Titans cruise to a 7-0 shutout home victory over the Kellenberg Firebirds in a Catholic League matchup. The Titans only allowed four hits in the contest, and scored two runs in the first inning and never looked back en route to victory.
On the mound, Atkinson was dominant. In six innings of shutout ball, Atkinson struck out six, only walked one and allowed only four hits. Atkinson was also a threat at the plate, as he went two for three with a double and a RBI. Atkinson was one of two Titans to collect multiple hits in the contest. Jalen Josey went two for three as well with a double, triple and two RBIs. Josey also scored two of the Titans’ runs in the game.
Andrew Sinclair opened the scoring for the Titans in the first inning, bringing home Tyler Cook on an RBI single. One batter later Atkinson scored Sinclair on a double, but was thrown out trying to stretch that double into a triple. The Titans never took their foot off the gas however, as one inning later, after the first two batters struck out, Josey scored on an RBI single by Alex Waye.
After a scoreless third, Holy Trinity added four to their lead. The first two runs were scored on a two RBI triple by Josey, and the next pair of runs were brought home on a two run single courtesy of Cook that found the grass in shallow right. The Titans held a 7-0 lead after the fourth inning, a lead they would maintain until the final out.
For Kellenberg, it was a struggle both on the mound and at the plate, as hits were few and far between. Of the four hits the team collected, two came off the bat of Will Cowan. While Jimmy Ernst and Brian Cadieux had the other two hits for the Firebirds. On the mound, Matt Reiter was the starter. In four innings, Reiter struck out six to only two walks, but allowed seven runs on eight hits. There was a bright spot on the mound for Kellenberg however, as the bullpen combined for two innings of no hit baseball.
Outside of Atkinson, the only other player to take the mound for Holy Trinity was John Perino, who pitched the seventh and final inning of the game. In one inning, Perino struck out one, walked one and faced four batters, including recording the final out of the ball game.
The two teams will face off once again today, May. 1, with the series shifting to Kellenberg in Uniondale, N.Y. First pitch between the two sides is set for 4:30 PM.
