A 10-run comeback win, a senior day, and multiple doubleheaders made for an eventful college baseball Saturday. Here’s how it went down.
Division-I:
St. John’s 9 — Xavier 3
The Red Storm played their second game of the series against Xavier and prevailed, 9-3.
Matt McCormick put Xavier up 1-0 in the first with an RBI single and that was the only run scored in the game until the fourth inning. The Johnnies took the lead with two unearned runs off a throwing error by the Xavier infield. In the sixth, Xavier’s Connor Misch hit a solo shot to tie it but St. John’s rallied in the seventh.
Errors and wild pitches allowed Garrett Scavelli, Chad Falcon, and Anthony Brienza to score three making it 5-2. Jimmy Keenan tacked on a run on an RBI double and Marty Higgins followed with a two-run single making it 8-2. Xavier tallied another run off a homer in the eighth but it was not enough.
St. John’s will look to win the series on Sunday against Xavier at 1 pm.
Hofstra 14 — North Carolina A&T 4
The Hofstra Pride collected 20 hits in a 14-4 victory over North Carolina A&T.
Each side jumped on the scoreboard early as it was 3-3 in the third inning. The Pride turned on the heat scoring eight unanswered runs.
Alex McCoy’s three-run homer and Penn Sealey’s two-run homer in the sixth inning put the nail in the coffin. Carlos Martinez allowed four hits, and three unearned runs, and struck out seven in seven innings pitched.
Hofstra will look for the sweep on Sunday at noon.
Fordham 10 — Rhode Island 8
The Rams scored 10 runs on 14 hits in a 10-8 win over Rhode Island. Madden Ocko and Cian Sahler combined for 7 hits for Fordham.
After Rhode Island scored the first run, the Rams answered with five. Sahler had an RBI double, Tommy McAndrews hit a sacrifice fly, and Madden, Steve Luttazi, and Henry Pelinski drove a run in each.
Sahler and Ocko kept at it in the fourth as both batters had RBI doubles extending the Fordham lead to 8-3. Chris Genaro hit a two-run double to make it 10-3. Rhode Island attempted a rally and were close but the final score was 10-8. The final game of the series will be played on Sunday at noon.
LIU 11 — Delaware State 10
A major comeback victory happened on Saturday for the Sharks. Down 10-1 in the sixth, LIU managed to rally and take the victory.
Jake Mastillo got the rally going with a two-run double. In the seventh, Mastillo launched a three-run shot making it 10-8. In the ninth, Jack Power walked with the bases loaded to cut the deficit to one. Mastillo scored the game-tying run off of a wild pitch. Noah Sorensen won the game for the Sharks hitting a walkoff-single.
The Sharks will play the final game of the series on Sunday at 1 pm.
Stony Brook 7 — Monmouth 11
Stony Brook was down 3-0 in the third inning against Monmouth. Matthew Wright hit an RBI single to get the Seawolves’ first run.
Monmouth extended their lead to 7-1. Ryan Micheli blasted a two-run shot to make it 7-3 but Monmouth kept pouring on making it a 11-3 lead. Stony Brook attempted to come back but only got so far making the final score 11-7 Monmouth.
The Seawolves look to bounce back on Sunday at 1 pm.
Division-II
Adelphi 2 — New Haven 7
Adelphi fell to New Haven on senior day. UNH got an early two-run lead but Michael Robinson’s two-run homer tied it.
It wasn’t a day for Adelphi bats as only two other Adelphi batters had hits besides Robinson. Adelphi fell to UNH 7-2 and will look to avoid the series sweep on Sunday at 1 pm.
Molloy vs. College of Staten Island (DH)
Game 1: Molloy 9 — CSI 0
The game was scoreless through four as both pitchers, Molloy’s Ryan Hynes and CSI’s Gerard Santos, were dealing. Molloy got a 3-0 lead in the fifth thanks to Nicholas Dagnello, Joe Burriesci, and Chris Giardino getting RBIs.
The Lions iced the game in the seventh scoring six runs to make it 9-0. The inning was highlighted by Matt Yip’s RBI double.
Game 2: Molloy 16 — CSI 2
Molloy flooded the gates early in the first inning scoring eight runs. JJ Devito’s two-run single was a part of the early scoring.
In the third, Devito hit a two-run homer and Patrick Sanchez hit a two-run single to make it 12-0. With the game coming to a close both teams scored a few runs but the outcome of the game was already decided. Molloy wins 16-2.
Queens vs. Bloomsburg (DH)
Game 1: Queens 5 — Bloomsburg 0
Game one started as a pitcher’s duel with Jordan Sanabria dealing early for Queens. Jorsixt Jimenez worked a bases-loaded walk to score Queens’ first run and a fielder’s choice added a second. Joey Patane hit a two-run RBI triple to make it 4-0. Phillip Krpata hit an RBI single to make it 5-0.
Game 2: Queens 9 — Bloomsburg 8
Krpata made an early impact after stealing third base and scoring on a throwing error to make it 1-0 Queens. The Knights would keep pouring it on as they ended up with a 9-1 in the fourth inning. Matt Filip’s two-run double was a part of the Knights’ scoring onslaught.
Queens allowed several walks that led to mistakes where Bloomsburg capitalized. However, Queens shut the door and prevailed 9-8.
Division III
SUNY Old Westbury vs. Farmingdale State (DH)
Game 1: SUNY OW 3 — Farmingdale State 9
Old Westbury got to an early 1-0 lead but three runs were scored by Farmingdale State through the third inning. The fifth got uglier for Old Westbury as Farmingdale State tacked on six more to make it 9-1.
Mike Petrucelly hit a two-run home run to make it 9-3 but that was all for game one.
Game 2: SUNY OW 11 — Farmingdale State 10 (10 innings)
Game two was more offensively loaded in the back end but it was a slow start. Farmingdale State got the early 1-0 lead this time but Petrucelly struck again with his second two-run homer of the day to make it 2-1 OW.
In the fifth, Nick Papageorge hit a three-run home run to make it 5-1 OW. Both sides exchanged runs for the rest of the game as the score rose to a 10-10 tie.
OW’s Zachary Horowitz hit a solo shot in the 10th inning that would ice the game and give OW the game-two victory.
