The Syosset Braves got the better of the Oceanside Sailors on Wednesday, April 24 with a 7-6 victory.
“This team is full of energy,” said Tommy Martelli. “We always fight back and that’s why we come out on top. Now we’re looking to close out the series tomorrow.”
On a sunny afternoon during spring break, the Braves and Sailors were tallied up against each other with Oceanside now holding an 8-6 record in the loss.
On the road, Syosset got out to a 2-0 lead in the first two innings on a Ryan Steinberg double and a Steven Klein single.
Both teams trade zeros in the third, when Oceanside delivered their first runs in the fourth. Getting on base with a walk, Luke Villella broke for home on a passed ball cutting the Braves lead in half 2-1. Patrick Pallentino then blooped a single into the outfield tying the game at 2 in the bottom of the fourth.
In the top of the fifth, Tommy Martelli broke the tie right away with a two RBI double down the left field line giving the lead back to Syosset, 4-2 late in the game.
“I was looking for the outside pitch,” Martelli said. “And he left it over the middle and I took care of the pitch.”
Syosset continued the inning with two fielder choices with one of them hit by Mianulli to the first baseman trying to get the out at home but could not secure the out or run. The Braves extended their lead 6-2 at the end of five innings.
Oceanside clawed back quickly in the bottom half of the fifth with Luke Villella coming in clutch once again for the Sailors with a double followed by a Dylan Beirne single to come within one run, 6-5.

Syosset scored their final run coming from a sacrifice fly in the sixth by Elaine to cap their score at seven runs, 7-5.
In the last inning, Oceanside made things interesting scoring a run off of Heltzer double making it a 7-6 game. But Syosset was able to nail down the win with a strikeout to end the game over the Sailors before any further damage.
“We had some shaky spots here and there but those guys fight, those guys are dogs and they got through the innings,” Martelli said.
Syosset will now try to end the series against Oceanside with the final game tomorrow on April 25.
