Friday College Recap (3/29) Powered by Orlin & Cohen

St. John’s

The St. John’s Red Storm continued their hot stretch on Friday when they shut out the Winthrop Eagles 6-0 at home. The Red Storm have now won 15 of their last 16 games, and move to 13-0 in home games.

Blake Mayberry was the star of the show for the Red Storm, going five for five with a double and triple, and brought in three runs in the contest. Jackson Tucker, Luke Orbon and Garret Scavelli each had one RBI of their own. Xavier Kolhosser continued to dominate, as he moved to 6-1 on the year. Through seven shutout innings, Kolhosser struck out ten and only allowed three hits. 

For the Eagles, only Charlie Evans had multiple hits. Riley Huge started the game for Winthrop, tossing 4.1 innings, striking out 10 and allowing three runs on five hits as his record drops to 4-2 on the year.

The Red Storm is 18-5 and they will continue their series with Winthrop with a doubleheader on Saturday.

Hofstra

The Hofstra Pride continue their struggles with a 10-5 loss on the road to the Towson Tigers. The Pride continue to see struggles on the mound, as they fall to 1-3 in conference play.

One of the lone offensive bright spots for the Pride came in the ninth inning, when pinch hitter Mike Sweeney sent a two run home run over the right field wall. Alex McCoy, Steve Harrington and Matt Pelcher each also had an RBI in the contest. On the mound, Michael O’Hanlon struggled for his second loss of the year. In six innings, O’Hanlon allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits. O’Hanlon recorded five strikeouts and walked three.

For the Tigers, their offense was led by Cole Stefano, who had four RBI’s in the game. Andrew Luczak started the game for Towson, tossing four shutout innings with three strikeouts. Justin Rebok was the winning pitcher for Towson.

The Pride drop to 9-16 with a 1-3 league record, and will continue their series with Towson on Saturday.

Stony Brook

The Stony Brook Seawolves opened a non conference series at home against the College of Charleston Cougars 11-5. The Seawolves drop under .500 after the loss of the opening game of a three game series between the two teams. 

The offensive leader for the Seawolves was Evan Fox, who had two RBI’s in the game. Matt Brown-Eiring also came through with a solo home run in the sixth inning. Evan Goforth and Robert Taylor also had RBI’s for the Seawolves in the game. Eddie Smink started for the Seawolves and was the losing pitcher. In three innings, Smnik allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits. Cole Singsank was the star for the Cougars offensively, driving in four runs. Jake Brink was the winning pitcher.

The Seawolves drop to 12-13 and will resume their series with Charleston on Saturday.

Fordham

The Fordham Rams opened their A10 schedule on the road, where they took down the Dayton Flyers in a dominant 12-2 victory. Despite entering the game with a 8-16 record, the Rams opened league play with an offensive explosion while only allowing two runs on nine hits.

Andrew Kanellis drove in three runs in the contest, which led the team. Daniel Bucciero and Ryan Thiesse also drove in two, while Tommy McAndrews two RBI’s came on a two run homer. TJ Wachter, Cian Sahler and Chris Genaro each had one. Declan Levalle started the game for the Rams and picked up his third win of the year. In the game, Levalle tossed seven innings, struck out four and allowed two runs on nine hits. 

The Rams move to 9-16 with a 1-0 league record and will continue their series with Dayton on Saturday. 

LIU

The Long Island University Sharks were narrowly defeated 4-2 at the hands of the Sacred Heart Pioneers. The Pioneers continue their early season dominance, as they move to 9-1 in conference play after their narrow victory over the Sharks at home.

There were no runs in the game until the top of the sixth inning, when both teams combined for five runs. In the top half, LIU sent two baseballs over the fence, with both JC Navarro and Jack Power connecting on their first home runs of the season. However, their 2-0 lead was short lived, as the Pioneers responded with three in the bottom half, and added an extra insurance run in the seventh. Garrett Yawn started the game and picked up his third loss of the season for the Sharks. In five innings, Yawn allowed three runs on seven hits. Jake Babuschak was the winning pitcher for the Pioneers while Owen MacDonnell got the save.

The Sharks drop to 7-15 overall with a 6-4 league record and will resume their series against Sacred Heart tomorrow. 

Farmingdale

The Farmingdale Rams were victorious in both games of a doubleheader on Friday, shutting out the Manhattanville Valiants 1-0 in the first game, and 5-0 in the second game. The Rams open conference play in style, with two stellar victories over Manhattanville. 

In the first game which was only seven innings, the only run of the game came in the third inning, when Richie Heyder drove in what would be the game winning run. Johnny Dougherty started and finished the game for the Rams. Dougherty allowed only four hits and struck out nine in a complete game performance. 

In the second game, which was nine innings, the Rams once again shutout the Valitans. Four of the five Farmingdale runs came in the fifth innings. With Ryan Wasserman driving in two runs, while Greg Friedman and Justin DiMartino each drove in one. The fifth and final Rams run scored on an error in the eighth. Derek Watts started and was the winning pitcher for the Rams. Through seven innings, Watts struck out four and only allowed four hits. 

The Rams are 8-6 overall with a 2-0 conference record, and will play the College of John Jay on Wednesday.

Adelphi:

It took a full nine innings, but the Adelphi Panthers were victorious over the American International Yellow Jackets 9-8. Despite being down 6-1 at one point during the game, the Panthers were able to battle back before winning the game with a walkoff in the bottom of the ninth.

Bryan McCleary was the hero for the Panthers, driving in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on a single. Greyson Pizzonia led the Panthers in RBI’s with three, while Alex Rende wasn’t far behind with two. Alec Maag, Joe Pellegrino, Albert Ramos and McClaery each had one. Brendan Kenneally started the game for the Panthers, tossing two innings, striking out two while only allowing one hits and no runs. Coletan Reitan was the winning pitcher for Adelphi.

The Panthers are 7-15 and 2-5 in league play and will continue their series vs the Yellow Jackets on Saturday.

Queens:

The Queens College Knights battled the Mercy University Mavericks in a doubleheader split on Friday. The Knights were defeated in the first game 10-8 before defeating the Mavericks in a 17-15 slugfest in the second game.

In the first game, Jorsixt Jimenez and Jaden Rivera led the Knights with two RBI’s, while Matt Filip, Robert Jacobsen and Nick Barreiros each had one. Jordan Sanabria started the game and struggled in a losing effort. Sanabria tossed five innings, and allowed seven runs on 11 hits.

The second game had a much better outcome for the Knights, as they were able to explode offensively despite allowing 15 runs. Filip led the Knight’s in RBI’s in the second game with three, while five other members of the Knights recorded two. Despite allowing seven runs (five earned) on 12 hits,  Caleb Cassie was able to collect his second victory of the season on the mound. 

The Knights are 13-10 and will continue their series against Mercy on Saturday with another doubleheader.
