Brentwood Aims For A Stronger 2024 Season

It was an underwhelming season on paper for Brentwood as they finished 2023 with a 5-12 record. However, there were positives taken away from it. Head coach Rich Gonzalez is entering his eighth year as head coach and is expecting a better year.

“[Last year] we didn’t have as strong a season as we would have liked but it was a productive season in that no matter the circumstances, we finished the season with good chemistry and a good attitude,” Gonzalez told Axcess Baseball

Brentwood’s squad will be led by some key seniors and a junior. Gonzelez mentioned that his captains are seniors Rob Ortiz, Jose Mena, Jaden Rivera, and junior Kevin Fajardo. Gonzalez highlights this group’s strong work ethic and sound character as their energy fuels the team.

“For our team to be successful in any way, these four need to provide the same character they always display and continue to produce as they always have,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez also expects the team to have a few breakout names in 2024. Sophomore Rylain Vega is a standout middle infielder who started every game as a freshman. Gonzalez describes his glove work as “second to none” and mentions his skill with the bat. He’s excited to see his development as a future key player in the program. Junior Nathaniel Alvarez is another name Gonzalez expects a big year from. Alvarez plays a skilled catcher position while also occasionally being stationed at first base.

Gonzalez’s main concern with the team this season is pitching depth. He likes the rotation but, in the case of injury, he feels that the roster does not have enough arms to substitute.

Brentwood’s biggest strength is at the plate. The team’s hitting is anchored by the seniors. Gonzalez notes that they somewhat have an idea of the strike zone and hope that his heavy hitters will be able to bring runs in.

Gonzalez isn’t circling any opponent on the schedule this season. He expects his team to play the same hard game for nine innings against every school.

Brentwood will open their 2024 league schedule at home against Riverhead on April 2.
