Generally the biggest test of amateur baseball comes when a young ballplayer makes the switch to the big fields. Many players dominant at the younger ages, only to meet their match as the deeper dimensions result in harmless flyouts and endless frustration.

That was not the case for Patrick Dalien of Team Beast as the powerful slugger stepped up and crushed a home run over the fence at Lasorda Legacy Park in his first at bat.

This was coming off a sensational year on the small fields as he compiled a slash line of .580/.654/1.060 which is good for a 1.710 OPS. He crushed 20 HRs and drove in 84 runs.

He followed that up by going .343/.540/.629 on the big fields the rest of the season.

He was just as dominant on the bump, as he struck out 110 batters over 60 innings. He was given the assignment of pitching in every big game for Team Beast, a team he has been with his 8u.

His awards this season include MV-Pitcher at the PG Northeast World Series, and the captain of his middle school basketball team.

Dalien, who will attend Half Hollow Hills East next year drew rave reviews from his coach, who noted that he is a tireless worker that went to VSP twice per week this offseason, and does hitting lessons every week. The 5’10 170 lb 8th grader is physically imposing already and that work ethic will bode well as he continues to grow.

I spoke with his travel coach Anthony D’Andrea and he had the following to say:

“Patrick epitomizes hard work and passion to improve and get better. He gives his all in every play, running out every ball as if it’s the last. His dedication doesn’t go unnoticed by his coaches and teammates.

Not only is Patrick immensely talented, but he also uplifts his teammates by making them feel valued and important. His work ethic and respect for each of them and the team reflect in everything he does on and off the field.”

I spoke with Patrick and here’s what he had to say…
