Up Next Powered by State Farm Ken Kortright Agency: Ryan Bush

(Editor’s Note: This is the fourth installment of the Up Next series in which we highlight the top underclassmen on Long Island. Previously, we featured Everett Zarzicki, Brian Brower and Stellan Zangari. Special thank you to State Farm Ken Kortright Agency for sponsoring this year’s series.)

Since 2017, Commack has turned into the premier baseball program on Long Island. Much of that is due to the culture that the late head coach Bryan Bonin instilled, as the Cougars won a County Championship in his first season at the helm and followed that up with another in his final season in 2021, and in the first two seasons under Matt Salmon in 2022-’23.

Besides the great culture that Bonin helped instilled, they have a tremendous pipeline of talent that’s on par with the best in the region. One player in particular that should be a big contributor this year is infielder Ryan Bush. Coach Salmon noted that had they not been so senior-laden last year, he likely would’ve been a factor as a freshman. Regardless, he is a big part of their future and he showed that this summer playing for MVP Baseball.

He batted .362 with a robust .495 OBP and .931 OPS over 33 games against top conpetition. Bush was named to 5 PG All-Tournament teams and for his performances.

The Commack infielder will certainly be a player to watch in the coming years.

Was baseball always your No. 1 sport? Do you play any other sports?

Yes, baseball was always my No. 1 sport. I started during tee ball and have played ever since. I have been asked to play other sports but baseball was always most important to me and my first love. Being on the field was my comfort place.

Who are some people who have had a positive influence on your career?

My dad has always been by my side teaching me fundamentals, his love for the game and how to present myself on and off the field. When I was younger, I took hitting lessons from Pat Lennon who not only taught me baseball but also taught me life lessons, staying true to myself and kept me motivated when I felt down in the game.

Do you take private lessons from anyone?

Currently, I take hitting lessons from Chris Scura who I’ve known since I was 8-years-old. I have grown as a player thanks to Chris. He is a big reason for the success I’ve had at the plate.

What has been your most thrilling moment on a baseball field?

It’s hard to list just one. there has been so many great moments on the diamond with my teammates. I guess I would say the first championship at the age of 10, especially since we were big underdogs and my first HR over the fence at Frozen Pipes at the Rock.

What was the best baseball trip you’ve been on?

My favorite trip was to South Carolina for the 2022 Triple Crown Underclassman Summer Nationals in Myrtle Beach. We finished third out of a 32 team bracket. We played a lot of baseball but also a lot of team bonding. These boys have become my family.

What are your goals for this offseason?

My goal is to get stronger and work on my game to be the best player possible. I’d also like to start the process of emailing college coaches in the hope to be fortunate enough to play at the next level.

What does it mean to be a part of Commack baseball?

It is an honor to be part of such an elite program and to follow in the footsteps of such great players. It will not only be a challenge but a thrill that I am looking forward to.

Who are your favorite players in Major League Baseball?

My favorite players in Major League Baseball have to be Francisco Lindor and Derek Jeter. I like how both of these players take pride in the game and respect the game.

Favorite TV show or movie?

My favorite TV show is Impractical Jokers. It is a great show when you’re looking to laugh.

Favorite app on your phone?

My favorite app is Snapchat because it allows you to communicate with your friends in many ways.

Favorite musical artist?

I do not have a particular artist. I listen to a lot of different music from hip hop to country.

Favorite vacation spot?

My favorite vacation I’ve been on was San Diego with my family. We took a trip there after Christmas with my parents, aunts and uncles and cousins for New Year’s.

Dream car?

My dream car would be some type of Ferrari.

Favorite restaurant on Long Island?

My favorite restaurant I’ve been to is Gurney’s in Montauk. I think it’s my favorite because we don’t get to go that often.
