LuHi has captured the PSAA Championship for the past three years. One of their main contributors this past season was infielder and pitcher Ivan Epps – who was named Playoff MVP this season and was also a starter last season. The hard-throwing righty recently announced his commitment to Manhattan College. I originally met Ivan back in 2016 while working at the New York Baseball Academy at Hofstra University. Epps was one of the most impressive players in attendance as a 9-year-old, and the staff was forced to make him play two years up because of his talent. Sometimes you just know when someone is destined to be a great player, and now here we are 7 years later and he’s throwing 90 MPH with a 100 MPH max exit velocity.

I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say…
Can you explain your experience with the college recruiting process and why you chose Manhattan?
The college recruiting process was exhausting at times due to constant searching for the right showcases to attend and researching for the right schools, all while practicing with the mindset of an athlete who needs to succeed. Still, I prayed to God and knew I was going to find a place that was right for me. I just needed patience. I chose Manhattan because of the coaching staff’s experience and knowledge of the sport. Another reason is the culture that the coaches and players are instilling in the program at Manhattan. That being, to achieve the best possible version of yourself. This mindset molds the team together and makes it a winning program.
How have you enjoyed your time at LuHi? What has it been like to be part of the program?
I have very much enjoyed my time at LuHi; from the vast amounts of electrics that they offer to the amazing school spirit that there is. The teachers and students truly create LuHi’s feeling of family with the demand for excellence.
What has been the biggest thrill of your playing career to this point?
The biggest thrill of my career up to this point was pitching in a playoff game. They had close to a no-hitter and it was the fifth inning with the bases loaded and one out. I proceeded to strike out the following batters back-to-back with the moral support of my teammates and coach. It was thrilling because it was a late night game and we were the last teams at the baseball complex under the lights.
Who are some people that have had a positive impact on your career?
Many people have had a positive impact on my career, but to name a few; parents/family, Coach Francisco, Coach Duprey, and Coach LeBron.
Who are your favorite players in Major League Baseball and why?
My favorite players in the Majors are Ronald Acuna Jr, Shohei Ohtani and Spencer Strider. The reason is that each of these players has a swag or a presence about them that is captivating to me. Acuna Jr. always has fun in the sport and is a stud athlete. Shohei Ohtani exerts humbleness and purpose every time he pitches and hits. Spencer Strider is a player that I always learn from whenever I watch him pitch.
Favorite baseball trip you’ve been on?
My favorite baseball trip was my second trip down to the Perfect Game WWBA Tournament in East Coast, GA. This is because at the tournament I faced the best competition at the time and I realized that if I wanted to win I must practice more and with a greater intensity.
