Kellenberg has been a consistently strong program over the past several years. The highlight was certainly the back-to-back CHSAA Championships in 2016-2017 but they also made it to back-to-back finals in 2021 and 2022 where they ran into Chaminade both years. One of the man contributors on those teams was catcher Kenny Hirschfeld, who is now at New Haven. Kenny is playing in the Blue Chip Collegiate League where he was named Player of the Week after batting .500 with 2 doubles, one HR, 7 runs scored, 4 RBIs and he threw out 2 runners.
I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say…
Can you discuss your decision to attend New Haven and how you’e enjoyed your time there?
One of the reasons why I chose the University of New Haven was because I knew that the school has a very successful baseball program and is in a very established conference where I know I can contribute and help my team win.
What are your fondest memories of your time at Kellenberg?
One of my fondest memories at Kellenberg was probably going all the way to the Championship series my junior and senior seasons and playing and competing with some of my best friends.
What has your experience been like playing in the Blue Chip Collegiate League?
My experience in the Blue Chip Collegiate League has been great. I get to continue to play baseball with two of my coaches who have helped me since I was a young kid and helped me better myself as a player and as a person.
Who are your favorite players in Major League Baseball?
My favorite MLB player as of right now is Harrison Bader. I love watching him play but my favorite all time is definitely Thurman Munson.
What is your favorite restaurant on Long Island?
My favorite restaurant on Long Island is probably Churrasqueira Bairrada in Mineola, it’s got great Portugese food.
What is your favorite app on your phone?
My favorite app on my phone is definitely BeReal – it’s the best.
What is your favorite TV Show or movie?
My favorite TV show of all-time is The Soprano, but my favorite movie is Airplane! It cracks me up every time.
What are your interests outside of baseball?
Some of my interests outside of baseball are going to the gym and working out but also coaching and helping younger kids get better at the game of baseball (Shoutout to 12u Baseball U).
What are your plans after college?
My plans are yet to be determined but I definitely want it to involve something with baseball.
Who are some people that have helped you in your baseball career?
There are so many people who have helped me along the way but one is coach Dom Gatti. He’s been coaching me since I was 8 and has helped me develop my whole swing. Also, my mom and dad for always helping and reminding me to keep my faith along this journey.
