Brooklyn Bonnies Sweep Saturday Matinee Double Header

Game 1

The Brooklyn Bonnies and Merrick Mayhem are two highly talented and high IQ  baseball teams that faced off in a double header Saturday morning. The Bonnies got the bats started early as Theo Sinivoi and Cameron Fell hit back to back singles in the first at bats of the game. This led to an rbi sac fly from Lewis King to give the Bonnies a 1-0 lead.

Hard-throwing left-hander Ahsan Torres took the mound for the Bonnies in the bottom of the first. Torres looked great in the first, but this didn’t stop Mayhem from getting to him. After Bryce Finkelstein hit a single and stole second and third, Gavin Jurek hit a single to drive him in and tie the game up at 1 heading into the second.

Although the Mayhem had momentum after tying the game, the Bonnies took complete control in the second inning. The Bonnies scored three runs in the second thanks to three walks and an rbi single that was ripped into left field by Logan Ojeda. Down three runs the Mayhem threatened with first and second no outs in the bottom half of the second. But, Ahsan Torres was able to stay calm on the mound and record three straight strikeouts to escape the jam.

The third inning was silent for both teams as Torres recorded another scoreless inning and Logan Mann threw a 1-2-3 inning for the Mayhem. The fourth inning was more of the same as Torres and Logan Mann each threw scoreless innings again.

In the fifth, the Bonnies offense resurrected. They were able to add 2 insurance runs to extend their lead to 6-1. These runs were both scored on Gennaro Sirota’s 2 RBI single. Brooks Lewis took over for the Bonnies on the mound in the fifth. Lewis was another hard-throwing left hander and he put up a scoreless inning with no hits and one strikeout.

The Bonnies really broke things open in the sixth with a 4-run inning. The runs were scored by Ahsan Torres’ RBI double and Khalil Gayle’s 2 RBI double, who came around to score on a wild pitch. With a nine-run lead, Brooks Lewis shut the door with three straight strikeouts.

Coming off a big 10-1 win, the Bonnies were feeling good going into game two. In the postgame interview, Ahsan Torres said, “we feel great. We always feel like we can beat anybody. We just have to work together as a team.”

Game 2

The Bonnies used their momentum from game 1 in game 2. Mason Mercado took the mound for them and set the tone early with three strikeouts in the first inning. Griffin Kelson took the mound for the Mayhem and was able to notch a quick 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the first.

The second inning was more of the same for Mercado as he had another scoreless three strikeout inning. In the bottom half of the second, the Bonnies offense had a huge inning. They scored 4 runs thanks to a walk from Mason Mercado, singles from Ahsan Torres and Khalil Gayle, and a 2 RBI double from Brooks Lewis.

With a 4-0 lead in the third, Mason Mercado put up another scoreless inning, with help from Mason Hemraj who threw out two runners attempting to steal. The Bonnies offense exploded in the third with a 7-run inning to make it 11-0. Theo Sinovoi, Cameron Fell, and Lewis King all had singles for the Bonnies, and Brooks Lewis had a three RBI triple. In the fourth, Mason Mercado locked down the mercy rule win with a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts.

Mercado finished the game with four scoreless innings, 8 strikeouts, and only 1 walk and 1 hit. After the game, Mercado said his well located fastball and changeup were what allowed him to have such great success on the mound.
