Brooklyn Bonnies Pull Away Late in 8-3 Win Over Port Washington Legends

by Chris Donnelly

In a game where the score was 8-3, it doesn’t tell the whole story. The game started off slow on the offensive side of the ball as there were some strikeouts and nice defensive plays preventing runners from getting on base. The starting pitcher from the Brooklyn Bonnies, Ahsan Torres, was locked in from the start keeping the Port Washington Legends offense at a halt. His counterpart, Cooper Blank, the starting pitcher for the Legends was keeping the Bonnies in check.

The Bonnies got on the board in the top of the 2nd after a leadoff single led to a stolen base and RBI from Brooks Lewis. Following the run, Ahsan continued the momentum from the top half striking out the side in the bottom half of the 2nd. The next inning for both the Bonnies and the Legends went quiet as it looked like it was going to be a low-scoring game.

Heading into the bottom of the 4th, the score was still 1-0. The Legends led off the inning with back-to-back singles including Cooper Blank helping himself to tie the game at 1-1. After some mishaps in the field, Blank ended up at third and was driven in by the third single of the inning this time by David Schultz giving the Legends the lead and making the score 2-1 heading into the 5th

In the top of the 5th, the Bonnies came up trailing for the first time all game. Not for long, as after a single, error, and a walk the bases were loaded with 2 outs and Nate Walker tied the game with a 4 pitch walk to make the game tied at 2-2. Ahsan worked through some trouble in the bottom of the 5th but dug deep and kept the Legends at bay going into the last inning and giving his team a chance to take the lead and win the game.

In the top of the 6th, the Bonnies did not mess around.

The first 5 batters got on base, the biggest being a 2-run home run off the bat of the shortstop, Theo Sinovoi, to give them the lead 4-2. That wasn’t all as the Bonnies got some runs off heads up plays but dagger was with the bases loaded and Nate Walker once again did not disappoint as he hit a 2-RBI double to take a convincing 8-2 lead. The bottom of the 6th the Legends fought back scoring one but it wasn’t enough as the Bonnies took over the game and walked away with an 8-3 victory.
