GAME RECAP: Long Island Storm Pull Out a Gritty Victory Thanks to Hot Bats and Clutch Pitching

by John Sullivan

The 14u matchup between Long Island Storm and Team Beast was one that consisted of two high-powered offenses that were ready to score runs early. The Storm got off to a very rough start, as their starting pitcher walked 6 batters and was only able to record one out. Despite the Beast plating 5 runs in the inning, they only had one hit, which was a 2 RBI single into right field by James Carlo. In the bottom half of the first, the Storm were able to get one run back thanks to an RBI single from Richie Conte

In the second inning, the momentum of the game completely shifted. Mikey Canepa, who worked out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the first, was now on the mound and he looked good. Despite this, Team Beast was able to scratch across two runs on the inning thanks to some sloppy defense. Trailing by 6 going into the bottom half of the second, the Storm offense erupted for a massive inning. They were able to bat around the entire lineup and plate an unreal 10 runs in one inning. In the inning, Ryan Pender had an RBI base hit to left field, Ryan Solomon crushed a 2 RBI double into center, and Matt Vialakis smoked a 2 RBI double of his own into the left field gap.

The third inning was quiet for Team Beast, as Mikey Canepa was able to throw a scoreless inning by getting a groundout and two fly outs. In the bottom of the third, the Storm added two to their lead after Jack Paul ripped a line drive single to score Richie Conte and Chase Eisel.

The fourth inning seemed like it would be a breeze for Mikey Canepa after he got a fly out and a strikeout on the first two batters of the inning. But, Team Beast was able to put together a two-out rally. Dylan Donofrio got the rally started with a hit by pitch, which was followed by a double from Kevin Hoeller, an RBI single from Jake Mancinelli, and RBI single from Robert Keller, a walk from Joe Genova, and then an RBI walk for Ryan Long. But fortunately for the Storm, with the bases loaded, two outs, and a three run lead, Mikey Canepa was able to induce a pop out into right field. The game was called due to the time limit after this, so the Storm came out with a 13-10 victory.

After the game, Mikey Canepa was interviewed due to his gritty performance on the mound. Mikey said remembering to breathe helped him through the pressure filled situations he faced throughout the game. Canepa and the Storm finished up pool play 3-0 and they will look to continue to roll tomorrow in the playoffs.
