GAME RECAP: John Carroll, James D’Alessandro Combine to Fire Playoff No-Hitter for Chaminade

Not all no-hitters are created equal. At the high school level, some are only five innings in run-rule games. Some include a bevy of walks, hit batters and errors that don’t resemble anything like a no-hitter.

This one certainly didn’t feature any of that.

It’s not often there’s a playoff no-hitter – especially in the Catholic League – which features the best collection of talent on Long Island.

Chaminade, the 3-time reigning champs that have somehow been overlooked in 2023, reminded everyone that they are, in fact, the Chaminade Flyers. One year after running roughshod through Long Island and capturing the first ever New York State Catholic League Championship, the Flyers entered the postseason as the No. 2 seed behind St. Anthony’s.

They drew a difficult matchup against No. 3 St. Dominic, who have been close to unbeatable with their ace Victor Frederick on the mound. The St. John’s-commit defeated them earlier this season in a game we covered and Frederick was on the mound that day.

One way to overcome that is to not allow a run. Or even a hit. Chaminade junior LHP John Carroll walked just two batters and struck out four against a potent Bayhawks lineup that features Penn State-commit Matt Cruz to go along with the St. John’s-commit, Victor Frederick. Carroll kept them off balance all day, allowing only a couple hard-hit balls such as one in the first inning that his 3rd baseman, Mikey Cervoni, made a great play on to retire the side.

Neither offense could get much of anything going. In fact, there was a total of 3 hits combined in the game.

The lone run came across the plate in the fourth inning when there was runners on first and second. A tailor-made DP was thrown away, allowing Evan Baschnagel to come around to score and give the Flyers a 1-0 lead.

Carroll went back out with the lead and was on cruise control. He fired hitless innings in the fifth and sixth innings. After retiring the first batter of the seventh inning, his pitch count was at 106 and was removed from the game due to the state-imposed limit.

James D’Alessandro came on in relief and promptly retired the next two batters to finish the no-hitter and lock down the 1-0 victory for Chaminade.

The Flyers will face Holy Trinity today at 4pm at Farmingdale State College. St. Dominic will face Kellenberg in an elimination game. The winner will advance to face St. Anthony’s.
