Molloy Ends Regular Season With DH Split With Southern New Hampshire

by Michelle Rabinovich

The Molloy Lions split a doubleheader with a 9-3 win followed by a 13-3 loss against the No. 11 Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) Penmen on Saturday, May 6, to conclude the regular season. Molloy’s overall record now stands at 33-15.

SNHU got on the board first in the second inning when Cam Caraher singled through the center field gap, scoring Nick Schwartz. Right after him, Dylan O’Sullivan singled to left field to score Caraher.

After that, the ballgame was all Molloy. Garrett Scavelli hit a solo home run after fighting though an eight-pitch at-bat. Later in the fourth, Gavin McAlonie singled to right field to score Anthony Manisero.

In the fifth inning, the team score four runs on a Scavelli double that plated Robby Keane, a balk that forced in JJ DeVito, and an Aidan Larkin single that scored Manisero and Scavelli.

The team wasn’t done with the damage there, leading off the sixth inning with a solo shot out of the park by Matt Yip. Later, Manisero scored Keane again by way of a sac fly to right field.

Manisero added another RBI to his day with a single to center field, bringing in Yip.

SNHU got the last say of the day with O’Sullivan’s solo home run, bringing up the final score to 9-3. Josh Roberge got the loss, dropping his record to 7-4. Molloy’s Mike Andreoli picked up the win, bringing his squeaky clean record to 8-0.

Game Two:

Game two showed two completely different teams on the diamond. While the Lions landed a run in the first, home runs from Caraher, Anderson Moreno and Christian Mercedes in innings three and four made it a 5-1 ballgame in no time.

DeVito responded with a single to right field to bring in Chris Giardino, and then Scavelli’s base hit sent Keane across home plate to cut SNHU’s lead to 5-3.

Schwartz made quick work to negate that effort with his RBI double to score Moreno in the seventh. The next plate appearance showed another Penmen home run, Caraher’s second of the doubleheader, scoring Schwartz in the meantime. After the bases clearing hit, SNHU loaded the bases, and a walk forced in Kyle Lavigne, finishing off the seventh 9-3.

In the ninth, Harry Vargas singled down the left field line to let Lavigne score again. Next up, Danniel Rivera hit a 3-run homer just shy of the foul post to round out the 13-3 ballgame.

SNHU’s Frankie Sanchez was credited with the win, bringing is record up to 5-1. Molloy’s Brian Morrisey got the loss, dropping his record to 6-3 on the season.
